I remember watching the VHS at my rented beach cottage when I was a kid, and honestly, I enjoyed it. I still remember the commercials after the film but before the credits.
I mean, it was common back then for VHS tapes at the time to have previews and ads at the start and end of their tapes. Even Disney themselves pulled this off. But really? Placing them in between the moment the movie fades to black and the credits? That's just all kinds of odd
Honestly this movie, subject matter notwithstanding, reminds me more of a Don Bluth ripoff than a Disney ripoff. Think about it, Snow White looks almost like a palletswap of Thumbelina (she at least has the same hairstyle of a long ponytail that's also kindof not a ponytail...), the owl looks like he fell out of Rockadoodle, Dom Deluise plays the magic mirror, and that sounds like Mrs. Field Mouse doing the voice of the head Dwarfelle, Muddy.
It has such an artistic vibe that really dates it, but in a good way. This movie was very unique in the time it came out, and I mean EVERYTHING about it was unique. A unique story, an absolutely nightmare inducing villain. The designs, the (phenomenal) painted settings and backgrounds (which were scarier than other princess movies and unlike other movies in that time), and this Snow White was known as an unconventional heroine (as this was one of the FIRST princesses that had a "personality" and reacted very human) so she really stood out. She was also unconventional due to her color palette, something that sticks with us compared to all other princesses even today. It had a great moral message, and a story kids could follow. It was also so palatable, that even boys liked this movie without it feeling it was over feminized due to the great voice acting talents and actual good universal moral messages we could follow. You could say it was the first Princess movie geared towards boys bc it was the boys that ate this movie up compared to the girls (and the boys who collected the toys). Also the music was hip, fight me. lol Most I know who saw this movie love it, or at least remember it fondly, including me. I still have trouble watching it bc it literally scares the begeezuz outta me. The dragon scene in the beginning, and the Climax? Holy fucking hell. But every time I introduce this movie to my new friends (including GenZ friends) they are pleasantly surprised about this movie, I'd say it's a lost gem. And one that sticks with you.
7:22- Even the original character had more personality by having a childlike innocence tempered with a stern personality of responsibility when needed.
+Eldritch Pikmin I thought the same, and the hooded thing looks exactly like that incredibly annoying hooded creature in Masters of the Universe. Since they thought it would be a bright idea to steal from Disney, can't say i'm shocked they might have taken a few things from an 80s cartoon.
AT Productions Really? Well I am a complete idiot, should have known that. So it's not stealing, its just reusing previous assets. That is only slightly better, reeks of laziness and lack of budget.
Holy shit, I actually remember watching this movie as a kid and I totally forgot Malcolm McDowell was the villain! I should have known by that voice. That man has been in a lot of terrible movies, but he's always a saving grace for them 'cause dammit, he gives it his all!
While Filmation was already closed in 1989 before Happily Ever After was actually released in 1990/1993, this movie did also lead to the bankruptcy of another company: First National Film Corp, the company that distributed it. So that's two companies brought down by this film's failure.
The 90's saw Disney ruling the roost and everybody else trying to play catch-up to them. Sometimes it works, like with "Ferngully", "Anastasia", "The Prince of Egypt", and such, and sometimes it doesn't work. Bluth's dark-age films, anyone ("Rock-a-Doodle" to "Pebble and the Penguin")?
i asked my parents for Disney's snow white when i was younger & they bought me this movie 😭😭😭 They told me thats all blockbluster had haha So now this is one of my childhood classics
8:21- What also worked about the character other than being very entertaining at being a hammy, card carrying villain. The reason for this is that the voice actor went all out to have this dramatic presence, which not only could give out speeches of ambitious charisma, but sometimes subtle acting and surprisingly creepy at times. This in turn makes him have more presence as a villain. The best example of this is when he arrived at the castle of the Evil Queen that shut up the goons, the genuinely low pitched shock of learning of his sister's death and the epic speech about taking command of the castle; which included rising plateaus from the ground and commanding the minions to serve him. This is followed by turning into a cool wyvern. In my opinion, that's one of the best ways to introduce a good villain. And the build up to the reveal of his guise of being a false Prince Charming unveiling to be Maliss himself, the reveal of the petrifying cloak and murder of a character with just his eyes are what I consider runner ups for that particular scene.
When I was a child, I would rewind the scenes where Malice and Snow White would interact. The scene where she is tied up particularly. 😥 I always found Malice hot. LOL
Thanks so much for reviewing this movie! I used to watch this all the time as a little kid on VHS XDXD I actually remember buying it at a used book store.
O.M.G... I watch this as a kid! I did not realize it was based on Snow White! I didn't even recognize it till I saw the dwarf elfs! Heck I even still have the VHS for this film!
This wasn't exactly "great" but I don't think it's as bad you make it. Then again, maybe I'm nostalgic as I watched this a lot as a little girl. Actually, I watched more than the Disney one simply because I like questing movies.
ill give the film this; snow white actually does something, multiple things actually, whereas the disney version actually did...nothing at all. this one goes on an actual quest, encourages peoples strengths, helps to protect and save their lives, shows compassion and open mindedness like with the cursed prince, is pretty damn brave-willing to go somewhere dangerous for her loved one, stands up to others-even mother nature. hell the way she fights back against malice at the end, grabbing the cloak and jumping on top of him with it, that was actually pretty badass and i certainly could never see the disney version doing that.
I agree, the development of Snow White was like 20 years ahead of its time, as she is much more independent in this version instead of just being a pretty damsel in distress. I'm a bit surprised that she did not know about her step uncle though, as the Royal families are typically very close to each other even to this day. His motif is also a good one, wanting revenge for his sister. I could see Tom Hiddleston absolutely assassinating this role in a remake.
I don't think these movies are that bad. I think they are really under-rated. Sure, the animation is not Disney-like, but it is decent enough. I also like their original concept of making movies that take place AFTER the fairytale plots. I can't see how some people claimed that they ripped off Disney, since the stories on which these films are based didn't belong to Disney to begin with. Should Disney sue everybody that made their own adaptations of these fairytales after them?
Anders Lindroth While its not that bad I think he has it right with 4 out of 10. Sure it did somethings right like Thunderinias song but it's not good enough to save the movie or be remembered unless you happen to see this flim.
I owned this movie as kid. I think my mom picked it up at a garage sale or something. I can't remember where we got it. It wasn't one of my favorites but it was mildly amusing when I was sick (which was often), it wasn't bad watching when I had watched all the Disney movies I had.
Am I the only one who thinks the prince is actually He-Man? And that Shadowy figure is that annoying character from He-man? Wait is the movie is in the same universe?
I'm not surprised Disney sued the shit out of them even though Disney doesn't own the rights to snow white as a character they only have there own version
I remember renting this movie from Blockbuster as a child and liked the movie. Now as an adult I have learned more about the movie and why they did what they did and your review was entertaining.
snow white and the seven drawfs owned by Disney as the drawfs cousins are pretty interesting as the studio will be remembered by its fans and their children.
Omg!!! I remember this movie! I was born in 1993 but when I was old enough to operate a VCR I remember finding this in our movies and seeing the actual commercials at the end.
In fact, the voice acting is quite good for most of these characters. Phyllis Diller is a surprisingly good fit for Mother Nature; Malcolm McDowell, again, is a really entertaining villain; Dom DeLuise was a delight as always; and they even had Ed Asner and Frank Welker as Scowl and Batso respectively. I have to admit, as pointless as they can be, at least they provide at least a bit of something to ease the boredom. Oh, and for Snow White herself, they even somehow got Irene Cara who sang "Love is the Reason" as well. And sadly she passed away last month. Jeez, "F" to pay respects, I suppose... :( Even so, that is REALLY weird editing for a VHS. As a kid, I remember seeing an advertisement for the live action 101 Dalmatians remake while WATCHING the VHS for that very movie and I was still confused at that age. As a dumb kid who noticed that strange design choice, just imagine how bewildered I'd be if I saw Happily Ever After and found out they only showed the credits after showing the bananas!

"No, it can't be because all the characters look slightly different and I know those aren't the seven dwarfs." "But why are they in this movie then?"
Yeah, here's the thing- this was actually done by what was basically the *corpse* of Filmation- it was shut down in 1989 after owner Westinghouse Corporation (which would eventually become part of ViacomCBS) sold the company to L'Oreal (yes, the makeup company), who decided to keep only the library of the company. Their shutdown came a DAY before a law was enacted that mass layoffs had to be announced 60 days in advance- EVERYONE was immediately out of a job. They had NOTHING left, which is likely why it was delayed and then dumped- they obviously couldn't afford a proper distribution. Not that it would help, but still.
Filmation closed down in 1989 before "Happily Ever After" came out in 1993, making it as a posthumous animated feature from Filmation after the animation studio closed down in 1989.
Probably because when the VHS came out, those toys were available. If I remember correctly you actually had to order them through the VHS...sh*t I still have my VHS version with the little sheet youd send in lol. Obviously they wouldn't be sold when the dvd was being sold, so it makes sense it was removed.
I actually for one liked the movie, songs were pretty catchy, they were some like able characters, Snow White actually fights back, and the ending is a nice touch to it, idk everyone has their opinions so
"Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night" was actually surprisingly good and dark, this one was just weird. I think I bought it from a bargain rack in a grocery store years ago back when VHS was still the main thing.
Malcolm McDowell is in this? Now to show it to Alex DeLarge. Alex: STOP IT STOP IT! PLEASE! I BEG OF YOU! It's a sin! It's a sin! It's a sin! It's a sin! Doctor: I'm sorry, Alex! It's for your own good!
I watched this on VHS when I was a kid. However, I remember so little of the film, that the only reason I recognized it was due to Sunburn and the Lord Malice dragon. Literally the ONLY line of dialogue that I remember was the line "They don't call me Sunburn for nothing".
Hey animat! You should review Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night. It was made by the same people and like this movie Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night is supposed to serve as the sequel to Disney's Pinocchio.
Oh god I remember seeing this movie in theaters I was so young I had forgotten most of it, but seeing this review brought it all back, I’ll say this even as a very little kid I thought Malice turning into a dragon was awesome and for some reason the being turned to stone halfway through his transformation creeped me the fuck out
Am I the only one that’s actually pleased with this? My god I can’t over how such celebrities as Malcolm McDowell Irene Cara ZsaZsa Gabor Carol Channing Dom DeLuise Phyllis Diller Tracy Ullman Sally Kellerman and Ed Asner are a part of it almost all these celebrities (except for Malcolm yet vaguely recall Irene dying a few years ago) are now no more may they all RIP
@@KangaKucha Animat should review both The Magic Voyage (the 2nd english dub that Nostalgia Critic reviews) & Felix the Cat. He might go crazy from the insane and annoying noises from those films.
I like the design of this snow white better than the disney one,and from what I remember this Snow white doesn't just hide and wait for her prince to save her. I respect disney's Snow white because that's where it all started but I hate Snow White as a character she doesn't try to stand up for herself or fight for herself and she's annoying.
I remember watching the VHS at my rented beach cottage when I was a kid, and honestly, I enjoyed it. I still remember the commercials after the film but before the credits.
Did your grandma also buy the figurines too?
The fact that the VHS has a bunch of commercials before the credits is really weird and hilarious at the same time!
They could had put the commercials at the start of the tape or after the credits. But at least that's different
I mean, it was common back then for VHS tapes at the time to have previews and ads at the start and end of their tapes. Even Disney themselves pulled this off. But really? Placing them in between the moment the movie fades to black and the credits? That's just all kinds of odd

This was made before Rock-a-doodle and Thumbelina.
This snow white was designed long before Thumbelina bro
The last one actually is true since Carol Channing portrayed Muddy.
And i DID THINK THAT THE HE MAN CARTOON WAS LAME BUT I WAS WRONG !!! THIS MOVIE CAN BE WORST !!!
Rest In Peace Irene Cara the voice of Snow White and the Greatest Singer.
I like how dark this movie gets though and snow whites blood curdling scream close to the end is awesome

Filmation closed down in 1989 before "Happily Ever After" came out in 1993, making it as a posthumous animated feature from Filmation after the animation studio closed down in 1989.
Yeah...I had this VHS as a kid growing up. I remember everything you mention in this review. XD
In the 📀, release, of the movie, ditches the ads, and runs straight toward the end credits, after it’s over.
Probably because when the VHS came out, those toys were available. If I remember correctly you actually had to order them through the VHS...sh*t I still have my VHS version with the little sheet youd send in lol. Obviously they wouldn't be sold when the dvd was being sold, so it makes sense it was removed.
I actually for one liked the movie, songs were pretty catchy, they were some like able characters, Snow White actually fights back, and the ending is a nice touch to it, idk everyone has their opinions so
7:42 I don't get the joke
R.I.P. Irene Cara
The music was good though
I watched this on VHS when I was a kid. However, I remember so little of the film, that the only reason I recognized it was due to Sunburn and the Lord Malice dragon. Literally the ONLY line of dialogue that I remember was the line "They don't call me Sunburn for nothing".
I'm excited for the Veggitales review next! VeggieTales was a big part of my childhood, so I'm very interested to see where this is gonna go :)
Hey animat! You should review Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night. It was made by the same people and like this movie Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night is supposed to serve as the sequel to Disney's Pinocchio.
Happily
Ever
After
read the capitals alone
HEAHEAHEAHEA!!!!!!!
My god I can’t over how such celebrities as Malcolm McDowell Irene Cara ZsaZsa Gabor Carol Channing Dom DeLuise Phyllis Diller Tracy Ullman Sally Kellerman and Ed Asner are a part of it almost all these celebrities (except for Malcolm yet vaguely recall Irene dying a few years ago) are now no more may they all RIP
the bat character featured in the film is voiced by Frank welker as enjoy as it's own thing.
HOLY SHIT, VEGGIETALES!!!! XD
This looks like something a character in a TV show would be watching, like a parody.
1:28-1:35 What the frikk?! 😱
They should have place the ads at the start before the opening logos.
This one needs a Nostalgic Critic review unless it will kill him.
that will be interesting
Republic_Empire I agree but there isn't much too it. He'd likely hate it as much as Magic Voyage but like it a lit more than Flex the Cat.
You know who should review this?
Phelous.
@@KangaKucha Animat should review both The Magic Voyage (the 2nd english dub that Nostalgia Critic reviews) & Felix the Cat.
He might go crazy from the insane and annoying noises from those films.
Back in 2008 this would have been a "nostalgia chick" video.
HOLY SHIT!!!! JONAH: A VEGGIE TALES MOVIE IS NEXT!!!!!!!!1
BOY, that was an obvious hint.
I like the design of this snow white better than the disney one,and from what I remember this Snow white doesn't just hide and wait for her prince to save her. I respect disney's Snow white because that's where it all started but I hate Snow White as a character she doesn't try to stand up for herself or fight for herself and she's annoying.
Me and my sister watched this over and over lol I didn't mind it at the time
seriously they made mother nature here look like a smoker
