Fil-Am cyclist here - so great to see so many people cycling in the Philippines now! I agree, gravel makes sense for the roads there but you are right that some people can't ignore the impractical allure of a sports car!
Keep on producing these thoughtful videos.
I'm trying! Haha thanks for watching
I'm definitely in your camp. My friends have road bikes. Slowly i'm tempting them to get a gravel bike. But if all bikes eventually can fit 40c tyres, i'm all for it! Start the big tyre revolution!
Big tire revolution!!
I'm actually also considering getting an endurance road bike like the Defy or the Domane, which have a clearance for 38c tyres. But I don't know, I'm more likely to get another gravel bike to replace my current one.
Ya I'm curious to see what happens to endurance bikes in 3-5 years. I wonder if they just merge the adventure gravel and endurance category.
I have both, I started on the road and then I wanted to do the gravel trails here so I got a Surly Midnight Special just like yours. I don't do bunch rides or have any friends who cycle so my riding is all solo.
Yup I really like my current bike stable now. I have almost the right bike for any ride I want to do
I miss watching the group.
That's why when they do a ride, I try to be there
just have different wheels sets to change to . 2-3 wheel sets, should be fine!!
That's the plan
Here in Hawaiʻi, I mostly see gravel, bmx, hybrid, and fat tire ebikes on bike lanes. Im thinking of getting a bike for when I vacation to the Philippines(I live inMindanao). I was surprised to see pinoy youtubers riding road bikes.
My personal preference is gravel for the PH.
If y need to be on budget get a 3x9 hydraulic hardtail. Put a dropbar with a short stem. Then you encounter the hidden bomb of incompatibility between road shifters and good MTB gearing. Look for Giant Conduct which many get rid off for a GRX or live with the compromize of cable actuated hydraulic brakes. Then you get a 24/36 low gearing at 3x9 instead of 30/36 at 2x11 with fancy GRX and have a smile on 20%. Btw y suspension fork comes for free. Its called monstercross and bike industry is scary of this low budget endpoint where they want to incremental go to; 38mm, 45mm, 50mm, hey Gravel with 60mm and suspension?
The other way if y have already a roady and be happy with bad gearing take a 650C wheelset. If the width clearance is good you can ride +20-25mm. Try until 650C get phased out.
thanks for sharing!
I'm riding right now a Trek Domane endurance roadbike. I have 2 wheelset one with 28c hutchinson & one with 40c pirelli
That's the way to do it
When I’m checking out a new route, I bring the gravel bike. If it turns out to be paved all the way, I bring the road bike the next time around. 😁
I tend to make snap decisions in the middle of a ride to do off-road sections hahah
@@carlovillarica For me I assumed the route would be all paved, so I rode my road bike, then I encounter wet and muddy trails along the way. 🤣
I just did a ride on what used to be gravel, it's now two lane concrete....at least for a while, then it turned to c**p...28-35 tires are all you need really but it's a good excuse to buy a new bike anyway😉👍
Hahaha any excuse to get a new bike
I love mixed-surface rides, so a gravel bike is the perfect choice for me.
Me too! Haha
I agree, just buy a 30c road tire and pair it with a deep rim wheelset for your canyon. It's practically the same as an endurance bike. Trek Domane, for example is an endurance road bike that can handle gravel tires. You don't really need a new frame unless you have all that extra $$$.
I wouldn't say that the cross bike is the same as an endurance bike. The cross is very aggressive in terms of geometry
can't blame your friend getting a Crux, that bike is gorgeous
Ya I'm so jealous hahah
sports car logic is spot on. thats why suv or auv is now prevalent than a sedan
Haha thanks!
Great rides beat nice shiny bikes all the time!
So true!
I personally have a roadbike and a gravelbike, but usually I use my gravel bike to have more comfort vs roadbike in Philippines, roads are just so unpredictable and sometimes, a roadbike can shake you in the core specially on road conditions in the Philippines. How I wish I got a disc brake roadbike with clearance to at least 28C or 30C tires so I can run lower pressures in the tires
ya i can't imagine riding road with tires smaller than 28
i ride an emonda. but i have 32c tires on. perfect!
Curious what tires do you have on?
With the kind of roads we have here in Manila, I am still sticking with my gravel bike. And yes, all roads and no adventure rides, that sounds boring.
Gravel bike for life! hahaha
Hahahah I'm all about that mix terrain life
how about two wheelset (road and gravel)?
I do know that cx and endurance bikes have very similar/close geometry. so maybe you can just swap the tires on your inflite if it allows wider tires 🤔
but its easier to just buy a new bike instead hahaha, roubaix na this! hahah
That's the plan. But I think you are mistaken about the geometry. The cx bike is really aggressive and much closer to a race road bike
@@carlovillarica ahh nice that's good tidbit about cx geo.
if that's the case new bike na this! hahahaha
Availability of parts keeps me away from getting any bikes that is not a Mtb. 😢
To be honest, I haven't had a problem with part availability
we still use both. we just have a gentleman's agreement whether we will be riding adventure or road. but if it's just a coffee or a city ride its every man for himself. 😅
I make it known in the beginning of the ride if I'm going chill. If I'm ready to race, I'll likely stay quiet hahaha
Visit nya sa akoa bai, The “spirit of gravel” here is well fully alive and kicking! 🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha puhon Bai! Amazed kaayo ko sa imong Strava Kay straight tanan lines with 90 degree turns
@@carlovillaricawell planned ang roads, even ang gravel country roads 😂
Cervelo Aspero fills that gap!
That's a lovely bike haha
@@carlovillarica I got one during the pandemic shortage…didn’t have many choices especially in my size 58. But like u I wanted to do more gravel. So the aspero has slicks and by the end of Feb I’ll pick up my order, the Ritchey outback with a mullet set up. Need something less racey for gravel. Too old and carrying too many old injuries.
Its all about the cornering for me. You should setup a cross course, basin mo sikat na diha. With the car analogy, i dislike nascar and drag racing🤷♂️
haha mao sad. Cross I think would be so fun. I'm just not the type to organize stuff, but we'll see
Im riding a Trek Checkpoint SL5. The only bike i need for all kinds of rides
That's a good one!
Honestly these are just rich people watching too much GCN. Even in Manila, rich people are kitted out head to foot with cycling gear riding Tour De France bikes. The Philippines itself is not a country for road biking. We have potholes and gravel roads everywhere unlike European countries with their miles and miles of paved roards. If anything we should be like the Canadians with trail riding everywhere.
lmao not a country for road bikes? hahaha are you really a cyclist in the PH?
if yes Saan ka sa PH nagstay na wala "ROAD" for road bikes?
To be fair, people can definitely use a road bike here, but for me personally, I wouldn't enjoy it as much.
Wow. Not a country for road biking. Everywhere In the Philippines there is a paved road. How many trails are there in whole Philippines? Can you easily go to a gravel road?
This is the most misinformed comment I have read so far.
Theres a thing we call "papawis lng". Your not gonna race in manila or loop it. Laps in moa and climbing tagaytay or Antipolo is enough in the morning. Rb is a good bike for Balikan lng rides.
Ride what makes you happy ^_^
Always!
@@carlovillarica dol, I see you in Busay sometimes, hiya lang ako mag hi
This happened to me at one point. When I switched to RB and found it enjoyable due to its super fast rather than my old mtb, when I was riding with my pals their still using there mtb's and I tend to go fast than them. I also encourage then to switching to RB and now....
I ride alone 🤣
Hahahah riding alone is fun, but I make sure to ride with friends when they are riding.
depends where you live, my area literally have no place to do gravel, so here will be very dead hahahah
Hahaha where do you live?
That's why I have two wheelset haha 😂 one for road one for off road 😊
That's the plan!
Gravel cycling/mountain biking isn't dead. .Ang riders lang 😂 too busy to go out on a ride. Mura bag luxury time kaayo Ang biking :(
hahha i do my best to make time for it
@@carlovillarica good for you Sir :) hopefully this year, makabalik kog bike bisan once a week. I still remember the first time you sent invites for a group ride. Haha. Sayang.
Huwow ang payat na nya!!!
