I didn't know it was there, it was about 3 am in NW US winter, I was just walking towards the barn through the dead weeds and SLOOMPF- suddenly I was 2 feet shorter and very confused. If it wasn't for the fact that I was wearing irrigation boots (easy to take off) and it being almost entirely frozen, I'd probably had just gotten sucked down into it like that kid. Apaches truly fucked me up the first time I went down a rabbit hole of watching old PSAs. Sharon’s screams rlly fucking get me. To make it worse, it depends on what poison Sharon drank (it’s implied to be pesticide, I think?) and how much, she was in *excruciating* pain. To spare most of the gory details: her stomach/intestines would be burned, her pancreas would develop pancreatitis, which would then cause her to struggle to breathe due to her lungs shutting down. Fucking terrifying way to go.

Yeah, I was a horticulturalist and considered the era it was shot in paraquat would be the mostly herbicide for people to accidentally ingest as it was often stored in old soda bottles between uses rather then leftover solution being dumbed. No smell and looks just like water but very toxic, has no antidote or effective treatment and causes a very nasty death. It banned in Europe and in the states it now has to have maloderants and dye added and there are very strict laws about it’s safe storage and application.

Survior of a self-induced poisoning here with only the hottest of takes: it's not fun. I knew about this film for years before I ODed, and that poison scene still gets to me.
I believe the pesticide/herbacide is hinted to be paraquat or diquat. In the US, it's heavily regulated and really only in use on industrial farms. Chubby Emu has a couple videos on it if you want to learn the pathology of it (it's a nasty chemical).
If you want to go even deeper down the rabbit hole, I would start at the Casual Criminalist's video on the Japanese Vending Machine Killer, or under it's proper name as we now believe it was a series of copycats: the paraquat murders.
As a final entry, if you don't mind the dark subject matter, look into su!cude by paraquat. My poisoning landed me in the ICU for a couple of days, but I will always be grateful I didn't use anything that strong.
      Good luck with your splunking

That was actually never a surprise to me. A common feature of middle-class American towns in the 70s seemed to be small groups of 15-16 years olds you'd run into when you were randomly walking around town at 10-12 years old who would curse you out and chase you for absolutely no reason. Also, if you were up in a tree, they'd curse you out and throw rocks at you. I never understood the point of that.

When I was at school in the early 2000s (in England), we would do school trips to this place that was basically an environmental hazards play park. You went in and were given a high-vis jacket, a hard hat and a clipboard and you were given the role of a risk assessor. You would walk around these different sets that were FULL of risks and hazards; like recreations of real-life settings. For example, there was a two-story house full of fire hazards and you had to go around the house with your team and identify as many as you could within a set time. There was a farm with a recreation of a grain silo and you could 'feed' the silo different objects to see how difficult it would be to escape it. There was a construction site with a FULL SIZE STEAMROLLER and you could put different things down a chute and watch the steamroller flatten them. It was a wild and anxiety-inducing experience, but I loved it every time we went.
If anyone can remember the name of the company/place, I'd be grateful!

A worker was checking the roof on holding tanks where i live and the roof of the tank collapsed and he fell in and drowned almost immediately in human waste slurry. They climb in to grab the ball, but the boy decides to pull himself up onto a first floor (2nd floor for the US people) concrete platform, then falling into a vat of building acid and dying. They did a close up of his hand sizzling as it disappeared like Golem in the volcano of Mount Doom in LotR.

I cannot imagine the pain the mother went through after finding out her son was abducted right under her nose and then tortured and killed. Breaks my heart.

My cousins all lived in a rural, farm town and we played in, on, and around every sort of farming equipment imaginable. And there's something about old farm towns where every property has an old wooden shed from the 1920's filled with outdated, rust covered tools hanging all over. It really looked like something from a Friday the 13th movie. And we would just run and chase each other through these old rickety shacks with no regard for the saws or sickles or exposed nails that would have maimed us if we had stumbled and fell. Looking back I'm amazed that all 27 of us made it to adulthood with all our limbs, fingers, and eyeballs. There were no exposed slurry pits though, thank god.

According to my dad and grandma, it really was a huge problem that parents didn't care too much if the kids died. At least fathers didn't. All of my 16 uncles have multiple stories of when their dad almost killed them on farm equipment and even more of how their older siblings almost killed them and the only care given was if they damaged the equipment or hurt an animal in the process. And for many of the younger ones, grandpa had apparently given up (because the farm was going under anyway, didn't need these kids anymore, I guess?) because when they had medical emergencies he didn't want to take them to the hospital due to price. My grandma reportedly threatened him with a skillet to get him to take my dad to the hospital (she could not drive herself) where he was diagnosed with a burst appendix and had to go for immediate emergency surgery. Grandpa really really seemed to believe that 'we got 17, what's it matter if one or two dies?' (Sadly he seemed to believe that about miscarriages too as some of the stories about how he treated grandma after miscarrying were horrific. Hers were all very late too so passing a nearly fully developed baby and your own husband being like 'welp, lets get to making a new one' is horrifying to imagine.)
It was only after he died that things got safer for the kids and grandma as Grandma sold the farm and moved into town so they had better access to education, safer working conditions and doctors/hospital.
You can say it was just my grandpa, but no other adults cared he was so reckless with his kids lives either. It was very 'if he wants to kill his kids, that's his problem and I don't wanna be nosy'.

I vividly remember those safety films from infant school in the 90s. They definitely left a lasting impression! I developed a fear of substations and deep water, especially gravel pits where, sadly, accidents were common. Back then, a lot of the power infrastructure was relatively new, so the dangers weren't as widely understood. Those public information films really drove home the message to stay safe and avoid those hazards. Lesson is don't touch the grass, stay in play games and be safe.
