When you strain your voice, your vocal cords make " nodes" which work in a similar way to calluses in that they protect the flaps from repeated damage. These nodes effectively ruin their registers unless they get them removed.

The song is already recorded when they make the music video :) (they do sing along tho) But it is indeed hard/difficult/bad on the throat to sing with fog, it sits in your throat and make it hurt a lot if you're singing right after, haha.. (I know I'm not Peter but I still wanted to answer the fog question :P)
Nick seems to be a baritone with a wicked reinforced falsetto that allows him to do an exceptional countertenor. Peter is a tenor with a baritone extension. Both are very talented and have worked very hard to perfect their voices.
