      Probably because these old songs are what our current version of Christmas is, in part, built upon, whereas the more modern songs came while it was already popular. Also, given many Christmas memories are made during childhood, it’s most likely your parents who chose the songs, and thus you were more exposed to songs they already knew (and/or that already existed, depending on your age), which then stuck with you. Also, time trimmed the songs to keep only the best and most memorable ; probably there were many many lesser songs at the time that have simply be forgotten with time.

      True, it reminded the actual meaning of Christmas, but the most of the audience's taste has changed, that's the reason 'All I want for Christmas is you' is so big despite the other songs in the same album 'Merry Christmas' has so much meaning and heartfelt lyrics. Not bashing the song AIWFCIY is my favourite too ❤️

    • @DravenGal
      @DravenGal 5 лет назад +14

      @FactsOverFeelings Matter LOL! Okay, I'm a tiny bit "triggered!" I get defensive about my favorite singers I admit. But I don't mean this comment to be critical, or mean, just so you know. I am both actually curious, and have something to say in response. But no disrespect meant! This is something I actually think about a lot, philosophically. And my essay here, it's all in good spirits. Sorry for the length, but that's just my way when I am thinking deeply. Cheers! (Holiday cheers, as it were!)
      So two questions, then my personal opinion.
      First question: Who sings any given Christmas carol "perfectly?" (And I'd love some examples, that would be interesting to watch and hear.) Because for anything to be perfect, EVERYONE would have to agree it's perfect, and with a song, that means anyone singing it would have to do it exactly the same way as everyone else. And that doesn't happen, with songs or anything else. The only type of perfection we can strive for in anything, is personal perfection. Like, for me the "perfect" version of White Christmas is Bing Crosby's. BUT, that doesn't mean anyone who sings it differently doesn't do just as good a job (Voiceplay has my second favorite, and it is miles away from Bing's but is fun and delightful and warm and sweet and silly so is awesome!)
      Every good artist sings songs in a way that is perfect for what they want to convey (assuming they're singing in peak health and circumstances). But Peter wouldn't put this out there if it wasn't exactly the way he wanted it to be.
      Second question. Which presents do you enjoy opening more? The ones that look likes perfect works of art, that are so polished and impersonal you know someone in a store wrapped them whom you'll probably never meet and who doesn't care about you, or the one with that was obviously wrapped by someone who cares deeply about you, and shows that love in their wrapping of a beautiful but not technically perfect gift, with a bent corner or imperfect flaps?
      Peter doesn't miss notes. He makes choices. All singers do. A song that reflects a bit of personality and love for the song, but is sung in a way that shows that love by the singer, always sounds better than a technically perfect one. In fact, save any done by machines (again, cold and impersonal but technically perfect) I would say there is no such thing as a "perfect" Christmas Carol. Everyone adds their own touches. If they don't change the notes, they add a flourish, or sing a verse not usually sung, or somehow make it their own.
      And I say that as a hardcore fan of Josh Groban and Adam Lambert. I'm also a Choir kid (K-12th), my sister was a Choir Director, I was raised on musicals, and my own connections to music are almost spiritual.
      Josh has one of the most beautiful voices EVER. Adam, well, he's in a class of his own. He CAN do something technically perfect, and nothing is ever accidental with him. But he when he does covers, he still makes them different by adding his own style. Take this video for example. Adam does a cover of Lady Gaga's "Marry The Night" when he was on Glee. Someone took the time to sync them up, and he sings it note-for-note the exact same as Lady Gaga and even in the same vocal range, no easy task! But he has one of the best ranges ever, even better than Freddie Mercury that even Freddie would envy (and that's according to Brian May, look it up, who isn't saying Adam is a better singer than Freddie, just different). So I hope you enjoy it. It's pretty cool. I mean, they are almost note-for-note in sync. ruclips.net/video/EPolJ_O8Gnw/видео.html
      So a few "missed" (ie changed) notes happen. Tell a parent their six-year old didn't sing in the school show perfectly. Chances are, they'll argue the point. I'm doing the same for Peter. He has MAD SKILLS and a beautiful voice, and he puts so much love in his singing. And THAT is what makes a song truly great. Thanks for reading, again I mean ZERO offense (I could argue the other side of this too, because I know what you are saying). But I say it's less on WHAT is sung, than HOW it is sung. Blessed Be and enjoy yourself this holiday season! 😊😉😁

Initially released as a single in 1989, Vince Vance's version of the song has charted several times on the billboard country singles charts. It is Vince Vance & the Valiants' only chart entry.

    thank you for adding the fact that "Carol of the bells" is based on a Ukrainian folk song ✨ By the way, the original song is not about bells at all. The Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovich made a choral arrangement of a folk song. The American composer Peter J. Wilhousky heard the choir sing on tour in Europe. Of course, he did not know the Ukrainian language, so it seemed to him that all the voices sounded like the ringing of bells, and therefore he wrote an English text with couplets for this song. In Ukrainian, by the way, this song is called "Shchedryk". Since childhood, all our children go to sing this and other Ukrainian winter folk songs to the neighbors' houses (I have been doing this since I was 5 years old). When I heard this song in "Home alone", I was surprised. And when I grew up, I realized that everyone in the world does not know that this is a Ukrainian folk song (( Therefore, thank you for spreading this information ❤️

None of my family is currently in the military. I'm not in the military. I don't know anyone who has a family member in the military. By all logic, it doesn't make any sense. I watched this video for the first time exactly a week ago. And... At one point, I felt tears welling up in my eyes, and about the middle of the video I sobbed very much. I mean..
    In my country people does not celebrate Christmas. And I have never did, but I wish it more than anything. Of course, we have the New Year which is celebrated on December 31, as almost everywhere, but this holiday can never be compared with Christmas.
    This is such a fabulous thing! This holiday has so much kindness and love, so much cozy, so much warmth, so much peace and unity. And even Christmas songs are literally filled with all the goodness of this world. They carry in themselves all the good that is in the universe. And I don’t have enough words to describe all this and everything that I feel now.
    I learned from books, films and history that Christmas and everything connected with it unites families and people and warring sides, and it seems as if the whole world is immersed in some unusual, magical, peaceful and quiet atmosphere. There are no wars, no quarrels, no hatred, there's only kindness to everyone, love and peace, and light thoughts. It resembles a winter dream after mother’s lullaby. Even the snow that night falls slowly and gently.
    No matter how hard the times people live, Christmas always gives them hope and strength to live on. It always reminded them of how important it is to love what you have. And it seems as if on this wonderful night, not only the whole world is immersed in the blessed silence of love, peace and kindness, but you are calm too. Your soul, which often suffers pain and feels joy, sleeps peacefully. And now in my soul there is something light and pure when I think about Christmas.
    After all, isn't it fabulous that such a wonderful thing exists on this imperfect and sometimes cruel Earth?.. Realizing of this made me cry.
    And I just wanted to say thank you. This video is just unbelievable, like all the videos and songs that you do. Your voice is amazing! In the new year I wish you all the best! Thank you so much again.
    (And sorry for too long comment and possible mistakes🖤)

    It has been pointed out that All I Want For Christmas Is You was precisely designed to be a huge nostalgic hit - it uses the AABA format common to Tin Pan Alley songs (and not the verse-chorus-verse-chorus format typical of modern songs) and the "50's chord progression" (I-vi-IV-V, in this case starting in G). And the sleigh bells at the end don't hurt for a Christmas song. :)

    "O Come All Ye Faithful" is the English version as it was originally written in Latin as "Adeste Fideles" and was first published by John Francis Wade in 1751. The original text has gone back as far as possibly done by St. Bonaventure in the 13th century or possibly by Cistercian monks. The one Wade did had four verses that have been expanded to eight. So the exact creator of the original is not known.

    Christmas songs truly capture the double emotional strike of the season.
    Christmas is a sort of an emotional nexus for both ultimate happiness and ultimate sadness.
    It's the joy of coming together, seeing the decorations and presents mounting up, the exchanges of love, cherish and gifts, and the prospect of doing so during years to come.
    But at the same time the sadness for the one family member who couldn't join, for those who already passed away and can no longer be there for Christmas, or for the happy, simpler Christmases of old which you can never revisit again, or even a general sense of compassion for those in the world who can't have the same Christmas you do.

    "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is a translation of a much older Latin carol, so the dating here is misleading. Also, to anyone questioning why "How Great Thou Art" is listed here--Christmas wasn't a universally popular holiday until about the mid nineteenth century when Victorian England (and its empire) started popularizing the winter traditions of the queen's German family. Many of the carols that predate that era were not culturally regulated to Christmas time anyway, so why not consider "How Great Thou Art" a Christmas song?

    • @IIHTank
      @IIHTank 5 лет назад +9

      The dating is very misleading because it was originally called Adeste Fideles. The writer of Adeste Fideles is unknown, but some have said it was John IV of Portugal known as the musician king. John IV lived from 1604 to 1656.

    • @ThePamAnne
      @ThePamAnne 5 лет назад +4

      Oh Come, Oh come Emmanuel, refers specifically to the coming of the Messiah who will save the Jews "who toil in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear." O Come all ye faithful says "oh come ye to Bethlehem." Both specifically refer to the birth of Jesus and Christmas. Some Christmas traditions arrived in England with King George of Hanover, first of his name. The German Christmas traditions became stronger under Victoria when Albert reinforced them. Also, it's not that Christmas wasn't popular. It's that the customs changed. We rarely bother with a Yule Log, the boar's head or wassailing. Those are older anglo-saxon traditions.

    Your voice, Peter, is so beautiful! I love this Christmas medley, and the harmonizing you do with...well...yourself, is amazing! Thank you Peter, and may you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

    The Christmas songs from 1919 and before are just glorious and are the Christmas songs I’m not sick of immediately (unlike most Christmas songs). Same with 1984.

      Other countries has better history when it comes to carols, I mean they have more old christmas CAROLS - very atmospheric, but form country to country that atmosphere is different. Unfortunately English ones, usually, are just christmas SONGS (these which are the most popular). I am so surprised Little Drummer Boy is that young and Mary, did you know? No, I didn't know. My point is, it's good to look for other countries carols in days, when we have easy acess to them.
      Ofc, I am aware UK has more old carols, not only those in that video.
