I keep two stack of wood near or on top of my stove. Suspended above the metal on flat stones. Criss crossed to allow the pieces (thinner than yours) to dry out some. They light easier that way. Then I use the driest ones on the left and go to the right stack next. I replace the left stack as I am using the right stack. Alternating stacks like this allows the wood to dry out ! It works great for me. In the middle is a large teapot of boiling water. It acts as a hot water radiator. Easy peasy lemon squeasy , mate !

maybe after the solar panels are clear off you can apply a coating of Rain-X? that might allow the snow to Simply slide off the surface.

Glad to see you guys still enjoying the experience. It is -22C here tonight and I have just plowed my drive for the first time this year and was bucking up a 100 foot Ponderosa Pine in the creek yesterday, dragging it through the snow, up the hill, with the tractor in 12 foot lengths. Tomorrow I will start cutting it into stove lengths and splitting it. Makes me feel so healthy!

There's what, near three cubic meters of water in there, or even more? That's a lot of thermal mass to cool down, especially when it's covered. They could probably reduce fuel consumption just a bit if they insulated the sides, but it's not that bad.

Hey Jessie and Alyssa! Here is a tip for your windshields on your cars: Stop buy a thrift shop, or a Uhaul rental place, to find and buy one of those "moving blankets" per car. You know, the blue or brown ones that get stamped with a company logo and seem silly. They are wonderful for winter time. Here is what you do: Fold the blanket in half, long ways. Flip up your windshield wipers. Place the blanket over the windshield, fold to the top. Open your doors on the driver and passenger front. Close one door with a bit of he blanket in it, to hold the blanket in place. Then pull the blanket a little taunt before closing the second door in on the remaining flap. Leave those Windshield Wipers UP! When you need to leave on a moments notice, all you need to do is get to the doors, flip the blanket away. Shake away the build up on the blanket and toss it in the back of the vehicle. Put the windshield wipers down, and off you go! This makes leaving quickly much easier. Especially if there is an emergency.

Both Home Depot and Lowe's have wind turbines. This is my 8th winter off grid, I struggled for the first year and a half with solar and generators. Then I added a wind turbine for under $500. Now a generator is rarely needed and the lack of needed gasoline has paid for the turbine. Solar and wind working together is awesome.
one other thing you may consider is wrapping your indoor stove pipe with copper tubing and you will have a constant source of hot water.

The last chore -- that is easy Jesse gets out of the hot tub, goes to the cabin, warms up Alyssa's boots and clothes, get a mongo sized fluffy towel, warms that up, get the dinner going while the stuff warms up. Then he scampers to the hot tub, and help his beautiful bride out of the water and makes sure she does not get cold. Why would he go to all this trouble you may ask? Face it guys, when a lovely bride gets cold feet in the middle of the night, where do they go? Yup, right on your back. Then you get yelled at for waking the Princess up with your scream of pain when you land on the floor in your woolen PJ's -- or in your case, your Batman PJ's

I did not even watch it, but i grew up in the woods, i was 40 miles from the nearest city, and 10 from a small town. after we had a huge snow storm..we were out of power, and no way to get out for 3 weeks..me and my dad went to the creek and got water to boil for drinking and bathing. We had firewood for heating the house..We had a deep freeze for the stored meat from cows we raised, as well as canned food my mom made and preserves, and we had our frozen veg from the garden...so yeah i can survive without power in the wild all winter..becasue i know how to BE PREPARED...

You need a sauna next to the hot tub. Doubles as changing room and warm place to really wash up, the Finnish way. Goes really well with a kiulu (hot tub like yours in finnish).
(At a cabin I used to vacation at we just emptied the hot tub when it wasn't in use, but you seem to use yours a lot and your water supply would be a problem for that, we just used lake-water and an electric pump.)

They are preparing for the future that we all will be facing. Those who did nothing to prepare will have a much harder time surviving.
      After Y2K was a
no-show, the head of FEMA said "Those people who prepared were not the Fools."
I I'm doing as much as possible to help as many people as possible through the coming Dark Forces window of time. we will all see that time and it will not be a pleasant experience for anyone save for those who have foreseen it and are willing to help other people.

I grew up in North Easter WA where it snows. Now I live in Puget Sound area where it rains. I have to admit that I not only miss the snow and winter chores, but I actually enjoyed it while I lived there. My wife would disagree though. :-)

Jesse grew up in an alpine climate too and spent many years in a rain belt. So nice to be back in the snow again!

You have just read an email from a person who hates HATES the snow!!!!I am now happy in FL where the temp right now is 84 degrees! And I haven't cut a piece of wood this year for my heat!! I have to make it to the thermostat to tend to my A/C! In our inclement weather we park our cars outside and get a FL car wash for free! We sweep our sidewalks after the grass is mowed although I must admit I have graduated to a battery powered blower! Our hot tub is maintained by our community association! :)

I load my trailer high, rounded off w/ wood so the tarp sheds the snow & rain, then I back to the door under the awning, attaching the back of the tarp to the house. I take one step out the door to get dry wood ...I also welded channel iron to accept 2x4's for a 6ft long 6ft high rack in the house near the stove to hold a weeks worth of wood, along w/ a fire ring for kindlin (wood split real small). Also, once I use enough wood from the trailer I remove my tailgate so then I can craw into the trailer for the rest. This gives me two months or more in 20 degree weather. My stove will also burn coal, but it burns too hot unless it's 10 degrees or less. The frist time I burned coal on a 30 dgree day, I had to open every door to let the heat out....Amazing Heat but wood is free. Wood burns at 500 degrees & coal is 1500 degrees. I've had a wood stove for 45 years, I'm now 11.... 6+5 = 11. God Bless.

Those LED seed warmimg mats i wonder if you could lay down foil bubble insulstion down on the floor then lay down those warming LED lights then lay down heat rated foam then lay carpet over it all for a low voltage redundant heating system? Even a five by five square could be make a huge difference in keeping warm. Or even wrap the inside of clay pots with those seed warming mat lights for low voltage warmers.

Friend of mine has a electric turbine on the end of his stove pipe (outside) he generates quite a bit of power of that thing. He lives in the middle of nowhere in France. (yep, he gets alot of snow there too)

At least your not having to drive up in to 2 feet of snow to go get more . I ran out last weekend up three bear in Idaho and had to cut some wood . I am going to have to go again this weekend . I hope there is not over 3 foot of snow this time . Its hard to keep up with 3 fireplaces .

You do enjoy yourselves!!! Do it more often! If some take fake offense it is because they have become envious!! If you got it flaunt it! !! BUUUTTT remember to whom is given much, much is required. And with all your getting, get understanding!! Hard work is required!! stop being apologetic for success. I enjoy your example of success.
