This is pretty helpful I got into a big argument as I had a sentence where my conventional grammar knowledge tore me between "they" as a collective for plural people and "they" as a collective for plural gender I'll give the example (an artists character profile) and you decide "Meet Ari. When they were very little they were believed to be the only werewolf who had wings" Am I the only one who is confused with the placement of they were instead e.g she was? As it sounds like they're talking about a group of werewolf's now and less about Ari.
We already use the same construction when talking about someone who(se gender) is unknown! Like: "Look, someone forgot their card. I hope they are able to find it back if we leave it here." or "There was someone on the phone for you, but I didn't catch their name. They said they were calling to ask you about the party next week" In cases like this, you're also talking about just one person!
@@Avi2Nyan I think it's just that one sentence that feels wierd to me. I use gender inclusive language more nowadays and it hasn't been much of a change. Everything still makes sense with the adjustments. Like even here: "Hey do you know when Jane Doe will pick up their car?" "Yeah, they were running a bit and phoned the secretary about it" I seem to use it fine here
I think the sentence sounds a bit off because you have a "were" before "believed". I would personally have written "it was believed that they...", but English is my second language so I could be wrong. Hope it helps :)
People cannot change their gender. If you were born with XY chromosomes, you are and will always be a male. If you were born with XX chromosomes, you are and will always be a female. If you were born with neither of these chromosomal types, you are a hermaphrodite.

@@Killjoy.Z that can be changed.
