- Hello!
Today we are moving slightly forward in time to Sappho, the great lyric poet! I've recently read three translations and wanted to share my thoughts on each.
Timestamps:

05:50 Stung with love: Poems and Fragments (translated by Aaron Poochigian)
09:13 If not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho (translated by Ann Carson)

Thank you for watching!

Thanks for this video! It was great to get a feel for the different translations. I'm currently reading Poochigian's translations, and I think that's a great edition to start with because of the intro and the context provided around each poem. But I look forward to diving into other translations in the future, especially Anne Carson's!
I found your channel through this video and I've been watching some others, I really enjoy your takes on these foundationam texts. Greetings from Uruguay😊
Hi Ben, thanks for this video! I started reading Sappho because I found this tiny little handmade booklet in a charity shop where a local old greek teacher made her own translation of some of Sappho's poems. I didnt know a lot about Sappho ( I heard you talk about her in your videos) but I found it so beautiful and moving that I started to read all the different translations I could find (in Dutch, my first language). And on your recommendation I also read Carson;s "If not, winter" which was really great! So thank you!
Yey! That makes me happy ha Thank you 😊
I’m not a poem reader but if there was an audio book read by you I’d buy it 😂
I love your videos ❤
Thank you so much!
I have just ordered the other two Sappho thanks to this video. Thank you Been for the thoughtful quality of your comments and readings. You are an amazing man.
I hope you enjoy! 😊
i love this little "series" of videos you've been making lately, you are not only hilarious but very well spoken!
Thank you! Glad you've enjoyed them :)

Thank you! Fabulous comparison. I can't decide if I like "someone...in another time," "no longer will I come," and "celery"...
Celery for me everytime 😄
And thank you! I discovered Mary Bernard's translation through your Sappho videos :)
@@doomantidote Ooh! I am so glad to pass on my enjoyment of her work.
I'm still devastated about the loss of the library of Alexander 😭

Has there been any contests to complete the Celery poem??
The results could be really fun 🤔

This was so interesting since I didn’t know anything about Sappho. 👏👏👏👏
Thank you! Check her out if you can :p

I'm still traumatized by the burning of the Linrary of Alexandria..
