  • We all like Gravity Falls, Amphibia, The Owl House, and many shows like it partly because of their protagonists. But you can't have a great protagonist without an excellent antagonist, and these three shows have that covered with Bill Cipher, Darcy/The Core, and Belos. But among these three, who is the best "final boss" villain?

Belos saw himself as a legitimate hero who’s only committing horrible acts against a race of people is because he thinks that it’s the only way to keep everyone safe. His brother falling in love with a witch made him think that they will do the same to everyone else and he wanted to stop it,like the video said he can be compared to people who committed unspeakable things for the “greater good”. Ironically Belos became the thing he hated and was so blinded by his ego that he couldn’t see he’s the one who poses a major threat to everyone. Throughout history it’s mainly the ones who wishes to protect what they love turns out to be the biggest monster

The Core should’ve been built up a bit more. Like aside from it taking over Marcy’s body and it’s effect on Andreas I didn’t have much investment in it as a Villian.
Belos works so well because of his hero complex and his effect as a manipulator. How broke Luz and made her question her own purpose and resent her own existence. He mentally broke her. And the fact that he managed to trick the people of the boiling isle into committing a genocide against themselves.
And Bill Cypher works so well as an underlying threat. He’s always watching. He feels like a lovecraftian threat. A being whose mere presence is mystery and uncertainty. He’s Madness and chaos in its purest form. But he’s also the devil on your shoulder offering up your wildest dreams for his own benefit. That’s in my mind what makes him the best of the three.
Belos at the end of the day is the worst of humanity. Bill Cypher is the worst of existence.

One thing that isn't really pointed out a lot is how before these villains are introduced, the show already had a 'main' villain, (Lil Gideon, Captain Grime and Lillith) but once the true threat shows up (Bill Cipher, The Core and Belos), they join the heroes and become more heroic and this trend has been happening a lot in animated shows recently, Adventure Time (The Ice King gets replaced by the Lich) Steven Universe (Jasper and Peridot get replaced by The Diamonds) Star vs the Forces of Evil (Ludo gets replaced by Toffee, ok this one might be an exception) and Hilda (Erik Ahlberg gets replaced by the Mountain King) I'm sure theirs more examples, those are the ones I can immediately think off.

Bill was much more dangerous, but Belos offered the better narrative, this was a human, that got his hands on power, and grew it into the greatest power of his reality (i have not seen any hints of gravity falls connecting to the owl house/amphibia earth), his goal was not super immense by comparison, but despite having all the power he also never really needed it. everything he achieved was through deceit, coercion or charm, getting his own hands dirty was always just the last resort, if he hadn't tossed Kikimora, of all beings, there wouldn't actually have been any stopping him, not before it would be too late anyways.

While one is pure evil, the other has an old ideology about conquering... but it takes a system and many people and it gets messy in this bloody system
While Belos, is the only person pulling string. Having an ideology that's been challenged and refuses to change... the face of all everything he has done
And done so much evil, and it was a mask person... any human could do the same like him
And it hits different, while also having another said human putting down a new path and change. . . Honestly having one of the most satisfying defeat

It also depends on the perspective you are taking for what a 'good' villain is.
From a writing perspective, then *Objectively*, Belos is by far the best of the three.,
Serves as a good obstacle for the hero to overcome and has a presence throughout the story.
Either represents the antithesis of the stories main themes or is the embodiment of those themes (Understanding vs Bigotry)
Is only defeated once the protagonist has overcome their internal flaws and grown as a person thus embodying the main theme of the series.
And leaves enough of an impact to be memorable and is an irreplaceable part of the story.
There are of course other facets but over all, from a purely writing standpoint, Belos checks off all the Boxes for a GREAT villain.
Bill and the Core all lack something in one or more of the categories, be it thematic relation or not having enough impact for the story to feel like it benefited much from their inclusion.

While Bill Cipher is the utmost classic Modern Disney Villain, who has definitely earned his Spot as one of the best villains in animation. The buildup, his entertaining chaotic character and near Villain Victory made him very memorable to me.
While Darcy/The Core was the most thematic villain and the antithesis of Amphibia’s central theme of change plus one of the best Villain designs that I’ve seen in a Long Time.
But yeah as cool as it looks due to lack of screentime and lack of buildup or presence in the series makes him the least memorable villain.
But Belos was certainly the most charismatic villain/character with depth and quite the interesting origin that’s in a way kinda tragic but at the end he’s an unsympathetic monster.
I’d go so far to Say Belos is probably Modern Disney’s greatest villain on par with Judge Claude Frollo, and Death the Wolf from Puss in Boots Last Wish.

Out of all three, I found Belos the best villain because of how different he is compared to Bill and the Core.
With the Core, you know a shred of Marcy is shining through in terms of personality when as Darcy.
With Bill, he balances himself with god level threats and getting a kick at seeing the shocked expression on your face.
But with Belos? It's like Darth Vader walking into the room. A sense of dread runs down your spine, an ice cold look coming from the mask he peers in when staring at you. It's like you're in a realm where a real demon is coming for you if you get in his way.
Furthermore, the fact that he's so realistic as a human and an emperor makes him all the more terrifying as he represents how strong a man's beliefs can be and how it can bring about their demise as well as drive them to the point where they themselves become the very thing they believe they aren't.

The Core was definitely hurt by a lack of screentime, but to me, I also think it was hurt by two other things: it was a bit too funny as Darcy, and it was introduced to Anne & Sasha much too late in the season.
While funny moments don't necessarily hurt villains, (case in point: Big Jack Horner from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) they can if they undermine the intention of also being sinister and a legitimate threat to the heroes in those same interactions, at least if they were intended to be in the first place. Take Bill Cipher: he is indeed funny, but in more of a "[nervous laughter]" kind of way, like someone who thinks doing random acts of violence is akin to an improv comedy routine (case in point: deer teeth & have a screaming head), creating an air of dread as we understand he does not have the same sense of morality as humans, adding onto his Lovecraftian vibe.
For the Core/Darcy, on the other hand, when it is funny it's more of "Marcy quirkiness but antagonistic," which doesn't produce the same reaction of "funny but also pretty messed up" that Bill had, reducing the impact of the Core's actually intimidating moments as a self-proclaimed deity with multiversal conquest ambitions, which admittedly make great use of Haley Tju's acting in producing a Marcy that was notably too cold, serious, and often maniacal to be that person. I feel like it could have worked if they had made it so that those quirks were more creepy and aligned with that detached & calculating side of Darcy, like they were a result of Marcy trying to break through in a way, causing the audience to question whether they should find this funny or deeply disturbing in an "I have no mouth and I must scream" sort of way, which would fit nicely with the scifi horror vibe the Core has going for it. In sum, the Core wavers a tad too much between "Marcy but malicious" funny moments and "your friend's not here right now" scary moments to be an effective villain at times for me.
Second, the Core met Anne & Sasha in the episode right before All In. In my opinion, this happens much too late in the narrative of the show, and takes away from the impact that could've come from having Sasha & Anne realize that their friend is the host for a god-like being, which could have prompted deeper reflection by having the Core use this revelation to torment the girls, possibly claiming that Marcy was better as an assimilated mind compared to how Anne & Sasha treated her. There was great story potential that could've been gained from such an interaction & its effects, as well as showing that the Core is not just waiting around for the invasion to start, but actively makes itself an obstacle for the heroes, but unfortunately we didn't get that. I love the finale of Amphibia (how often is it that we get this kind of series finale from animated shows nowadays, rather than simply being canceled?), but this could've given the fight with the Core in "All In" a greater impact imo.
Anyhow, that's my two cents. Also, it's amazing that Bill Cipher is going to be ten years old soon (Dreamscaperers, when he first debuted, came out July 12, 2013) and he's held up as arguably one of the most iconic Disney villains of the 2010s.

Bill’s actual backstory is that he most likely uses his destructive powers as a fun little distraction from the fact he accidentally destroyed his dimension and family. He now has ptsd and does literally anything to not think about what he had done. Stopping Weirdmageddon was the equivalent of denying an alcoholic beer. Bill was mad because any second more of not causing absolute chaos means more time pondering over that dark past and voices of all he has killed.

While I love the Owl House and Amphibia, I remain a bigger Gravity Falls fan. So, that said -- I think you were right at the start of your video, saying that which villain you find "best" depends on the individual -- what you're looking for in a story, what resonates best with you. I agree with criticisms of the Core; it was formidable, but it didn't do that much for me, I guess? (Although, I found it kind of funny that you called it out for limited screentime, when Bill Cipher is only in 6 episodes of Gravity Falls, and several of those, he's only in a tiny bit of the eps. He really doesn't have that much screentime at all.) For Bill and Belos, though -- they were each the perfect villains for their series, and you very much get a different experience from watching them. Bill is huge, difficult to comprehend (in terms of his goals), chaotic, terrifying, and seemingly unstoppable because of how much power he has and how many tools he has in his arsenal (once he becomes corporeal). Belos is more scarily relatable -- both because he starts out as just a normal human guy, and because, as you said, his type of evil is very recognizable from our history and from our present. Both Bill's and Belos's defeats are very satisfying, but for different reasons. So, in conclusion, even though I'm still more devoted to GF, I can't disagree with you picking Belos!
And, I do want to add one more thing about Belos versus Bill: the writing. Belos seems to have been meticulously planned from the beginning of the show. He has a deep back-story that is revealed over time, and the more we learn about him, the more disturbing he gets. (I would say that later-seasons Belos is MORE disturbing than first season, where he's just the masked Evil Emperor. He becomes more disturbing and scary once we know he's a human witch-hunter from the 1600s playing a long game out of essentially religious-fanatic motivations.) I think Dana Terrace and TOH's team did a phenomenal job on him. (Although, if you are more connected to TOH trivia, please do let me know if it's ever discussed that Belos wasn't originally meant to be the same as he turned out to be!) Meanwhile -- we now know that Bill, while included in the show from the start (as an image on the briefly-flashed end-card of the credits, and in various designs seen around the Shack), wasn't originally intended to be the Final Boss Villain, until they started work on Season 2.
Once again, I think it's hard to say which is "better". But I do think it's fair to say that Belos benefitted from the longer-term planning. Whereas, I give the GF team a ton of credit for taking this character they'd established, but weren't sure how he would develop, and turning him into such a compelling villain.

I think I haven’t encountered more unique villain that Bill really. He is unsatisfied with existence itself and the rules it follows, so what does he do - HE WANTS TO DESTROY IT, to reshape it into pure nonsense. He fist destroys his own dimension and as a being of another one, his powers in the third dimension allows him to do exactly that. I mean think about it, what is the first thing that Bill do when he arrives after trying for thousands of years- party, he spends the next few days making a party, which doesn’t make any sense until you realise that the whole reason why he does all of this is simply to be happy. The desire to not exist is something that everyone experience at some point in their life, but while for some people it last only seconds, for Bill it has lasted his entire life and he doesn’t want himself to not exist, he wants EXISTENCE AS A WHOLE to not exist which is a pretty interesting and unique motive. Also the fact that he has god like powers allows him to switch between hilarious and terrifying in a blink of an eye. And correct me if I’m wrong, but to be able to manipulate mater, reality and time gotta be the most OP power in all of fiction

I honestly think that Bill Cipher is the best final boss villain of the three.
Belos aka Philip Whittebane definitely is a great villain due to the terrible deeds he did, including killing his own brother, how he continued to be stuck in his ways and was never open minded enough to consider that he was wrong, he stubbornly continued on his path even when he was on the brink of death, he killed or at least almost killed Luz, it took Luz until the final episode to actually defeat him, and he was so unlikable to everyone in the owl house cast that his death at the end was just so satisfying.
The core is definitely a villain that needed more screen time, but it was the literal embodiment of the anthesis of Amphibia's theme of change. The core hosted Amphibia's greatest minds that refused to die and refused to change their way of life through conquering other worlds. The Core's most heinous act was taking over Marcy's body, and essentially making her the villain. Darcy definitely took the likable traits of Marcy, and twisted them into something evil. They even used psychological warfare to nearly defeat Sasha, who was redeeming herself. When the core was initially defeated, they tried to end all of Amphibia. Anne had to literally sacrifice her own life to finally defeat the core for good. The core worked as a villain because it represents what was wrong with Amphibia as a whole, but just needed more revelations on itself.
Bill Cipher is the best because of how powerful he is, how he was a bigger threat, how he is admittedly insane, how much he's tied into his respective series, and how the characters of Gravity Falls really had to overcome their issues to defeat him (which is true for owl house and Amphibia too, but I think it was more profound in gravity falls).

Belos may be the most fascinating portrayal of a manipulator I've seen in fiction. He convinced Luz, a classic bubbly overly helpful hero, that she wasn't a good person, and was in fact, as bad as him. He raised Hunter and countless other grimwalkers to only value themselves according to their usefulness. He indoctrinated an entire culture to be fearful of their own natural abilities and traditions. He attempted genocide to justify his own prejudices and to convince himself him murdering his brother was justified. For a brief period, he even convinced the audience that he was nothing more than a tired, homesick man.
Bill Cipher is immensely entertaining to watch. But Belos is the one who sticks in my head and makes me consider what it really means to be a villain.

I would have to say Belos from The Owl House for a number of reasons.
    1. He is actually a witch Hunter from the 1600s named Phillip Wittabane, which makes sense in a show about witches and very unique.
    2. He is a such a threatening and menacing presence ever since he made his debut in Agony of a Witch.
    3. His backstory is such an excellent one.
    4. He would not hesitate to do harm to those that are in his ways and either physically or mentally break them.
    5. He killed his own brother and cloned him and that clone and did again and again and again.
    6. He is the main villain throughout the whole series and the Collector didn’t become the main antagonist and instead made the latter more of a tragic character.
    7. He gets a very gruesome death.

In my opinion, worst to best, it's Belos, The Core, Bill
Belos was very evil, manipulting an entire civilization for hundreds of years, killing people, killing his own brother, and then killing said brother's clone countless times. He is also strong, and could beat Luz and her friends in monster form. He also provided a light challenge for Luz with titan powers, which while still only a small challenge, still shows how strong he is. However, he was trying to do something he though was good, so he unfortunately isn't higher.
The Core was also evil, manipulating Andrias and possibly other rulers as well. Unlike Belos, The Core knew it was in the wrong and still did it, a real villain. It was also prepared to stab Anne in the chest for her power, and destroy Amphibia just so it could win. However, without it's moon-self, it is a pretty weak bad guy, being defeated by a weakened Sasha who wasn't even in her stone-powered mode. Anyone with advanced fighting skills could take it down, and it needs a host for even this.
Finally, Bill is first because he is truly twisted. Like The Core, he knows he is evil, and enjoys it. Shuffling a mans face, making a throne out of petrified people, mocking Dipper's dad, being prepared to kill the twins, and manipulating a large number of people. He is also an extremely powerful being, capable of destroying universes, or at the very least l, dimensions. What makes him better than The Core, though, is the reasoning behind his actions, which are none. He does what he does simply for entertainment.

His presence is felt throughout the series and in the season 1 finale he is very intimidating with the scene of the titans heart beating faster. With the core I don’t really get that we only really see them in the first temple. Andrias felt more like a proper antagonist and that really should’ve been what the series antagonist. I think Bill is probably my favourite, I haven't rlly watched Amphibia, and Belos, well, the fact he died after getting squished on and King said "Ew! It's on my claws", just makes him not as appealing to me as Bill.
Bill is by far Disney's strongest character, to date, and also one of the best. Bill is extremely powerful, to such an extent that Time Baby had to come and stop him, yet were erased in a matter of 40 seconds, most of which is them just talking.
The thing stopping Bill is what makes Bill such a great character. A dream demon who enters the mind and dreams of characters, using their dreams to project his infinite power and show his capability of usage, which is something overlooked by most people.
Bill doesn't exist in the real world, until Weirdmageddon, and when he does get real he just makes it clear he's not taking no nonsense. He turns the valley of Gravity Falls to his playground in the matter of 3 minutes, or a good 45 seconds if you don't consider talking time. Bill is impatient, and he will do whatever it takes to be free from any confinement. That's why he wants a world of weird, to exist outside of the Nightmare Realm, and to escape Gravity falls, he has no patience and he can't understand why anyone would wait for a result.
I do feel like Bill has the greatest motive out of these three, the Core just wants to be evil for, well, I don't even know since I didn't watch Amphibia.
Belos just wants to end all witches and takes extreme measures that he's carried on.
But Bill has the motive of his personality itself, rather than past events. He gets extremely angry after he discovers Gravity Fall's natural border of.. Weirdness Magnetism... Thank you Stanford Pines for the, uh, *weird* name. Bill wants global domination, of course, as all villains, but he wants that because he hates confinement and wants to make his likely infinite legacy, well, infinite. That's why he was so insistent on the 3D World to let him in, and had to trick people in order to do it.
Bill wants to be free to enact world domination, and in order to achieve this he does the most brutal things in Weirdmageddon 3, with the dialogue "I've got some children I need to make into *Corpses*. "When I get my hands on you kids. I'm gonna dissasemble your molecules!" No other villain has as good dialogue as Bill, "Remember, reality is an illusion; the universe is a hologram. Buy gold, bye!". He's a very unique villain, and he'll do whatever it takes, including doing things Disney shouldn't accept, by, well you saw what happened to the Northwests. But Bill also decimated the Time Police.

The ting I like about Belos is that if your in a room with the Core or Bill, they will probably just kill you in a few seconds. But Belos tends to give an intimidating vibe and make you scared even when he is not attacking you. I also like his backstory and his reasoning because we know why he did all of this. For the Core we only know someone created this crazy gang on a computer planning to destroy other worlds. For Bill, we just know that he destroyed his old dimension and plans on destroying all the other galaxies. But for Belos, we know he used to be a human and wants to destroy the boiling isles because the witches there were mean to him. This is why I believe Belos is the best villain of these 3.

I still believe personally that bill cypher was the best villain. (I also haven't seen the other two shows and am basing my reasoning off of the facts stated in this video).
The reason I think bill cypher is the best villain is because he doesn't really have a good reason, nor a general goal. While the other two villains are trying to accomplish something, bill cypher simply wants to have fun. He doesn't want power, nor does he want order and control. He want chaos and destruction. This is what makes him, in my opinion, the most terrifying and menacing option. With the other two options, they seem to have a limit. Once they accomplish their goals, they can stop with their reign of terror. Bill cypher on the other hand, never cared in the first place, and willing to do almost any, horrible, putrid, heignous act just to have fun.
On top of this, he's virtually a god, as stated in the video. This makes him even more terrifying to me. With the other two, it was known what they could do to stop him, or the fact that they could be stopped at all. But with bill cypher, he is unbeatable. It adds to this level of dread you feel when faced with this indescribably powerful being, on top of knowing he doesn't give a shit about what he does as long as he's enjoying himself. Think back to when they were forming the circle in gravity falls to finally kill him. You feel this sense of pure horror and fear once you realize that the one chance you had, the one weakness that you could use, was ultimately useless. Put yourself the characters positions. Now, knowing you failed, this cosmic being stands before you, laughing at your failure. This giant, godly, pyramid triangle demon has won. It stares you in your eyes, as it tells you all the horrible things its going to do to your world, all the things its gonna do to you. Your friends have already been laid down, trapped in posters with faces of horror. In that moment, you'd be thinking, It's over for me. Theres simply nothing you can do to win.
tldr, bill in my opinion was an unstoppable force of evil who was willing to kill, torture, destroy entire planets, and probably many other things for his own enjoyment. In my opinion, bill easily wins best villian

Honestly, the Core was lackluster and kinda stupid, at least Belos and Bill had a established goal instead of just "conquer, if that fails destroy Amphibia"

    @LazyLazu Год назад +1

sorry... but I have to disagree, imo belos is a generic sympathy villain his first form was ominous and imposing, I liked that. but no he just seems pitiful to a point where calling him a villain is just pity points he's a spoiled brat. the very essence of bill cipher is based in pictograms and symbolisms such as the all seeing eye, and well obviously various types of ciphers and encryptions. I love how he was incorporated from the beginning and everyone trying to figure out who bill was in that intro screen he teased the ultimate ending from the very beginning with the pine circle with it ending up to be a complete plot twist where there was no convenient way to kill such a powerful villain and trickery was required which yet again is irony since his hole CHARACTER is based on the all seeing eye. but then again I'm also just a sucker for imposing mysterious figures who changed there corporeal form at will.
Anyway these are mostly incoherent rambles

The only thing that could be kind of fun with Belos would be when the collector shows up and takes care of him. But that’s more about the collector

Bill is probably the best character. He's fun and has a lot of dark sinister moments and is a character I haven't seen done right in any other show but as the best villain, Belos. Bill is great and incredibly menacing but Belos having a much more active role in the plot and more personal connections to the main cast make him a greater antagonist. Core is also there but let's not pretend their on the same level as these 2

What makes belos the best villan is that he represents the evil of humanity he supports his genocide based and religious ideologies but thats not the only thing.. the fact that he may have a hero complex is probably the single most human thing i have ever seen in a villain and thats terrifying

if this video does get updated, I wouldn't include Star vs The Forces of Evil because the guy who you'd think would make a good final boss dies in the 3rd season and the boss at the end of s4 is by far the least intimidating and least threatening final boss of all Disney shows. Imo, at least, it would make for a waste of effort to update it with that show
