    16:45 Hunter's hair is longer because of Belos it's the opposite reason Hunter cut it in the first place, to cut ties with him. You can mostly see when Hunter saw his reflection before cutting his hair, seeing of himself as Caleb and Belos. So the moment he got possessed, Belos got rid of anything "Hunter," turning him back into his "perfect" version of Celeb.
    If that makes any sense.

    • @blehfizz6194
      @blehfizz6194 Год назад +259

      I would also like to add Hunter cutting his hair is a symbolisation of him becoming his own person. So Belos growing out his hair during his possession adds another juicy layer of Belos stripping away Hunter's individuality. Belos is also shaping Hunter to the idealised version of Caleb, forcefully taking control.

    You did get somethings wrong about Bipper-
    1. It DOES actually further develop characters- specifically Mable. Because at the end we see her do something she NEVER does. And that's sacrifice what she wants for Dipper. We only see her do that again during Weirdmageddon. It's good development because afterwards- (Unless it's her bubble) she does tone it down quite a lot. Of course she's human and relapses into her bad behavior at the end of the show. But yk she's 12.
    2. It does further advance the plot, because Bill technically did his end of the deal and that's how they find out Old man Mcgucket (I swear that is such a hard name to spell-) is the owner of the laptop, and he rebuilds it and it's the countdown for the portal which brings Ford into the picture. If they had not know about Mcgucket SO MANY THINGS would be different about how that went about and possibly changed the course of the show.
    3. It **does** forward Bill's plan because hindsight is 20/20 and he needed that portal to go off for the rift to exist. It just also happened to free Ford, WHICH also becomes a big part of his plan because he needed Ford for the equation for the weirdness field over Gravity Falls.
    4. While it seems like it's an excuse for Bill to mess around in Dipper's body, technically that's how they **wanted** people to view it because this show was ALLLLL about mystery and the surprise of what something seemingly meaningless can lead into! (Love Alex sm for this show)
    5. Bill wanted to destroy the journals most likely because of Ford's broken deal. Other then that, it was so that they would possibly protect it more and keep that portal going. Not gonna lie, this is just a small theory of mine but yk. Also could be about hurting the enemy with what they love being destroyed or even a red heiring for the audience and the characters.

    Each of the possessions have meaning in them.
    Marcy was afraid of being alone and she ended up being the perfect host for an amalgamation of all the greatest minds in Amphibia to achieve their dark and greedy conquests to feel that they are securing a legacy of greatness but is actually paved with blood. Marcy wanted to live in a fantasy world were everything was fun and full of adventure, but she was unaware of the actual cracks in her friendship with Anne and Sasha due to how lost in the zone she can be. When she realized that she could have had everything she wanted in the mindscape of the Core, she knew it was not real and that what she did to try and keep her friendship intact was actually hurting it she made the mature choice to accept that people are not going to like the same things as she does.
    Catra is someone who has suffered and done a lot of bad things. She was raised in a place where any form of vulnerability is seen as weakness would be reprimanded. She only wanted to prove her worth and not be abandoned but the one person she ever let in left her alone in a toxic and miserable place. Catra tried to please the wrong people, but they were never satisfied and she did not make it easy for herself. Horde Prime was someone who could read Catra unlike anyone else. He showed what would happened if she disobeyed him and would go through with it. Catra had time to think and reflect on what she did and when she find out Adora would come to save Glimmer, she decided to save the one person she ever truly let in and loved. When Adora returned to rescue her, she made her stand and would not leave Catra to be in a place that would only cause her pain. Adora was not going to abandoned Catra again and Catra, while scared, was able to start slowly healing from all the trauma she had gain in the past.
    Dipper wanted answers so badly that he ended up making a deal with Bill to do so. However, he ended up being stripped from his body and have it be stolen by Bill. Dipper realized that the only one who could help was his sister Mabel, who was obsessed with some boy who makes out with his puppets. Dipper was willing to perform her play so she could get Journal 3 to help him get his body back. But Bill found and threaten her to give him the journal or else he would ruin her show. Mabel was going to do it but after Bill pointed out "who would give up everything for their sibling?" Mabel realized she was being selfish and did what her brother always did for her. After Dipper got his body back and Bill was vanquished, Mabel apologized to her brother and it helped them both be more careful when it comes to others.
    Hunter only ever had Belos as his only 'family' and only ever wanted to help people. He had his entire life planned out and it gave him some assurance of what he would look forward to. But he is just a kid and was pretty much tired all the time with his eyebags being a prime example. Hunter could not accept that his 'uncle' was an evil person until he saw it for himself in Hollow Mind. Before that episode, Hunter got to meet and interact with Luz, Amity, Gus, and Willow, and got to relate to them in a way that helped him greatly. Darius even saw how he should have some fun and "act his age" instead of trying to do what everyone tells him to. When Belos possessed him in Thanks To Them, after Flapjack, his first true friend, be injured gravely, it gave the strength to break free and fight back against his abuser. Hunter realized Belos never cared for anyone but his own delusional goals and fought, stating what he wanted to do in life and finally stand up to the person that hurt him and the people he's come to see as family. A true family

    One of the things the Bipper possession does is: it establishes that Bill can possess people. Ik it sounds silly, but this is what makes some of of the later events work without the audience going "wait since when is that a thing".
    There's of course Blendin who got possessed and which is why Bill was able to trick Mabel into giving him the rift, but more importantly:
    Ford. We find out in the Last Mabelcorn that Ford used to let Bill possess him. Because Dipper also had this experience, we know that Ford isn't lying out of his ass, well he could, but we at least know that this is something that's possible. This both helps to contextualize Bill and Ford's relationship in the past *and* lets Dipper and Ford bond more due to the shared trauma.
    Additionally, this is also very important for the finale: because of previous possessions, Ford installed a metal plate in his head. Because of this, Bill can't just go into his brain and steal the formula to leave the bubble around Gravity Falls and destroy the world; *and* it prevents Ford's memory from being erased with the memory gun, which is why Stanley *had* to be the one to make that sacrifice.

    Belos has always forced the Golden Guards to keep Caleb's haircut, or at least the hair noodle on the forehead, when he saw that Hunter cut it, he forced his hair to grow back quicker to make him look like Caleb again, it's such a neat design choice, quite literally reverting his growth as a person.
    Also, can we talk about how Belos hurt hunter purposely here? Like, even if they're stronger than Hunter, Raine was still barely hurt from the possesion after at least a few hours, but Belos quite literally started eating at Hunters' body with anger, quite literally BREAKING HIS SKULL WITH THE ANTLERS, it's him trying to get full control over Hunter, taking over him not just from the inside, but the outside as well.

      That is PURELY conjecture. There's no indication that Belos forced the Golden Guards to keep a particular haircut. In fact, we explicitly see that's not the case when he hallucinates them (alongside Caleb) during For The Future as he crawls through his hideout. They all have very unique looking haircuts. Hunter looking so much like Caleb was actually implied to be a unique occurrence based on Belos' dialogue in Hollow Mind. _"Out of all the Grimwalkers, you were the one who looked the most like him."_

    There, Bill stated that after he gets bored of having a body he would straight up kill dipper's body, leaving dipper's soul abadoned forever and making anyone believe he went insane if they started to suspect any change.
    Also, Bill's main plan was to get the diary and destroy it, as Bill is the type of villain that destroys anything that reveals his altermotives, as Stanford and Dipper both exposed him in there.

  • @daisyphinney1038
    @daisyphinney1038 Год назад +111

    I want to add that if you pay attention to the Northwest Mansion episode you start noticing that Bill left a physical and mental "invisible" scar on Dipper's mind and body. Pay close attention to Dipper's body language especially at the part he's talking to Old Man McGuket. It's too confident and cocky of a stride and body language to belong to Dipper, it's too strangly out of place; its a direct "negitive" energy of sorts Bill left behind that's still effecting Dipper. Ford seems to have more mental scarring than Dipper from Bill, but its still there. I think its more of paying attention to small details I mean Ford is traumatized by Bill. He gets so scared he starts ramping up house protection and keeping secrets (not that that's new to his character) from almost everyone.

    It's nice to see someone who makes these kinds of videos that looks at things from every angle, you don't just focus on the negatives and even go out of your way to point out a character's strengths and weaknesses.
    Most people I've seen who do this are just: "this is why this character's arc is bad" or "This episode was written badly and here's why"
    You on the other hand look at everything from motivation to character design to the reactions of other characters, openly admitting your biases and opinions rather than trying to find reasons to make them fact.
    It's really helpful to people who are trying to get a better sense of the show/story as a whole and hoping understand good writing on a level that's much deeper than one individual aspect of a character or episode.

    Anyone notice how the characters that get possessed are usually the most traumatized…
    Dipper is only 12 and I have a feeling he’ll need a bit of therapy after surviving the apocalypse, even if it wasn’t for that long.
    I haven’t watched She-ra recently but I don’t think it takes long to realise how MESSED UP Catra is
    Marcy was about to be separated from her friends, got stabbed, Anne and Sasha basically acted like they hated her and, correct me if I’m wrong, aside from moving it all happened in one episode

Adora rescues Catra despite Catra believing she's too far gone. Sasha forgives Marcy the moment she's free, even after her betrayal. And Hunter was brought back from death after his closest friend deemed his life as irreplaceable.

    I think the other thing to be considered for Belos/Hunter is that the reason that sequence was so terribly short is because of the severely limited screen time Disney actually allowed the show for its final episodes. They had to squash a whole season’s worth of story into just over two and a half hours’ worth of runtime. It also explains why he ‘drowned’ immediately after hitting the water (it can be inferred that Belos/Philip never learned to swim given the time he grew up in but even then, there would be more struggling than just plain passing out). I’d like to think it would have been given a full episode of the show hadn’t been cancelled (DAMN IT DISNEY).

    I wish possession arcs were given more time in shows. Usually, when a main character gets possessed by a major villain, not enough is done with them imo. Maybe they get an episode or a chapter, others might even get a season, but most only get a couple minutes which frustrates me. There's opportunities for different character dynamics and relationships, developing characters, new designs, the interesting reasons behind a possession and the drama and angst that comes with an old friend being used as a puppet by the villain against the main heroes they once fought with as well as the aftermath that comes after the main characters set them free. Like what if the possessed character killed, or if you don't want someone to die, severely injured one of their old allies during their possession? What if the villain uses their voice to emotionally manipulate and toy with the heroes? What if they destroy something valuable the heroes cherished, i.e. their hometown, a place they all cherished, or an item they needed to help defeat the villain? While no one would outright blame the character for what they did during their possession since they had no control over their actions, it would cause tension within the group and the formerly possessed to feel immense guilt over doing such things as they realise they can't so easily return to the fun, easygoing dynamic they had before.
    Though sadly, this doesn't happen because most writers don't want to have a character depicted as evil for too long and/or want them to lose control over their character for too long. I might be wrong, but I want to see more fleshed-out villain possession arcs in the future instead of only getting a few, spitting minutes with the concept before everything goes

Hunter always wanted to get rid of it, but it looked too much like Belos's brother for Belos to ever let him. When Hunter left, he got a new hair cut to further distance himself from what Belos wanted him to be, but then Belos brings it back when he possesses him. That's why his hair gets longer when he gets possessed.

    I think Hunter being possessed by Philip was unexpected, yet a good possession, despite being short lived. It was great to see Hunter stand up to Philip.
    Catra being possessed by Horde prime is a decent possession that hurts Adora physically and psychologically, which almost led to Catra's death.
    Bipper is definitely a favorite of mine because of how Bill was deliberately damaging Dipper's body because it was fun, along with trying to destroy the third journal possibly to prevent Dipper from finding out about the portal and trying to stop it like he nearly did in the episode "not what he seems", how Bipper was being cryptic around Dipper's friends and family without them knowing, and his dark plans for Dipper after he was done with his body.
    I ultimately think that the best possession was Darcy, which had the main villain of Amphibia possess the body of Marcy Wu, a fan favorite character, essentially making Marcy the villain, which is almost poetic since she brought Anne and Sasha with her to Amphibia without their consent. Not only that, but Darcy's access to Marcy's memories gave them some knowledge of the characters, while also being able to psychologically manipulate the characters. While I wish we had more Darcy moments, the Darcy moments we got managed to make nearly every moment count, especially when Darcy battled Sasha.

    I think the most impactful example of possession has to be from the Radiance from Hollow Knight. Possessing one person is bad enough, but making an entire kingdom of bugs fall under your command through a hivemind, it definitely takes the cake for the most creepy and terrifying. Imagine being unable to fall asleep, due to a sickness of Light in your dreams that is forcing you and everyone else to become little more than a zombie for life, all your thoughts and feelings taken over and swept away. That’s horrifying to imagine, especially since such a thing in real life would be unstoppable. One of the reasons that Hollow Knight is so good is that it flips the script on the “light is good, dark is bad” cliche that many franchises follow, instead moving to make the light the main antagonist, and the darkness a tool for the protagonist to bring down the villain.

    A: hide critical information about his potential coming, and
    B: make him the only one in (well, not in yet,) the real world with the necessary info to make a portal between worlds. Remember, Bill is the one who came up with the portal design in the first place. Destroying the journal gives him exclusive access to that design, and leaves Stan in desperate need of Bill's help, and we all know Bill loves to take advantage of desperate people. He can then offer Stan the chance to build said portal in his timing, on his terms.

Catra is rough, she's all sharp edges, and her big puffy hair and typically dark, detailed clothing really speaks to that. In almost entirely removing the hair, the headress, slicking everything back and removing all detail from her clothes- it is literally a possession of not only her body, but the entirety of her character, and how everything from top to bottom that _was_ Catra is just conveniently _erased_

    I’ve always been a huge Amphibia fan, it’s my favourite out of the Disney big 3 (Amphibia, gravity falls, toh). And I think most of that is due to the possession. Sure the core might of not had that much exposition but whilst watching I actually figured out that the core was going to be a issue before it was shown and before marcy was possessed. I think the little tid bits we got shown of darcy before the finale really hit hard to show just how much it was different despite taking some of Marcy’s personality. I’ve not seen she-ra so I can’t put my opinions on it, I feel like witch Hunter was just one shock moment, sure flapjack’s death was dark but it was one moment in the entire part of the possession. It didn’t really hit me that hard, the thing that did was the result of his sacrifice after. And Bipper was really fun and showed us just how dark Bill could get. But Darcy was a 13 year old child locked in a chair whilst her ex father figure forced this helmet upon her whilst she screamed was the real shock moment. And then the fact darcy has 0 sympathy. Villains with 0 sympathy get me and the core is just that. Seeing Sasha fight someone she loves is just so hard, you can tell she knows marcy is in there but for grime’s sake and everyone else’s she has to go all out. I think the scar that hits for the core afterwards is when you can see Sasha’s back scar in the 10 year time skip, it shows just how much damage the core did but also how much they progressed after it.

    for the thing about bills intentions with bipper not making sense: i think it's very in character speaking he's a god of chaos! he wanted to possess dipper just because, also through this was not in the show, in journal 3 it is mentioned they found a note saying bill had intentions to kill dipper afterwards.
    for nobody else noticing dipper wasn't himself, its presented throughout the series that people have a tendency to slightly overlook him, and there's also the possibility people actually preferred him acting weird, though i wish this was more presented in the show as an actual issue since it would've made for a great character arc where he actually talks to people about how he's mistreated and the fact there's an obvious favoritism for mabel.
    i think the episode could have been written to be better if instead of the reason dipper gives in isnt just becuase of the computer, but becuase hes constantly overlooked, where the idea of him being praised is brought up in some way. we could even have dipper saying something to mabel like "WHY CAN'T ANYBODY CARE" freaking out about how nobody realized he was possessed and locking himself in his room out of frustration, then have mabel come in and talk to him about the entire situation and how she's sorry. its a great episode but it really missed out on the opportunity to make dipper realize just how mistreated he is compared to mabel which couldve made a start of an interesting character arc.

    Kind of interesting that so much of what is wrong with Witch Hunter is “missed opportunities” and “it being rushed”. It makes sense, considering... that season 3 was majorly cut down. I wonder if they would have done more with Witch Hunter if they had a longer season 3.

    Marcy did have a relationship with andrias, and he despretly wanted it to be somebody else, but was denied. You can see that he is upset at marcy's state while apart of darcy, but he cant do anything about it. The darcy possesion gives andrias humanity, but does not strip him of his villany.

    Hunter's possession was def my favourite, and Catra's second place to that. The moment in TOH was incredibly impactful, it changed things permanently. Everybody worried for Hunter, showing how he's found a new family. And Flapjack gives his life to heal Hunter. The emotional pain last the rest of season 3, so when we get to see the gravestone... I cried. Wonderfully done. I rarely cry, but just seeing what the text said, man, that was so bittersweet.
    I like Catra's possession because it's also impactful, in other ways.

    This was so great! Honestly one of my favorite plots in media, some other honorable mentions would be Lena from Ducktales who is possessed multiple times by her aunt and has a very interesting dynamic similar to Hunter and Belos.
    There’s also Raph in The rise of the tmnt movie who’s possessed by the Krang and fights his siblings later in the movie (I don’t remember this one to well so I don’t have much to say)

    The short version "Why possession" is that in this day and age, the scariest thing for most adults and kids alike, is someone taking away your bodily autonomy. Body snatching is R*p3 in a child friendly format. It's something that levels up the villain as "Yes. I am unforgivable." It's the ultimate "Oh F__K" that kids and adults will agree with.

  • @flannelsmurf8579
    @flannelsmurf8579 Месяц назад +1

    I think Bipper was the classic cartoon example. Wonderfully done, lighthearted but still very serious, and the perfect element of danger.
    Hunter feels the most emotionally devastating, he’s just a child, and he kills is own best friend as opposed to say, being killed (Marcy).
    However, Catra is my favorite example. It’s a perfect callback to how she used to act and it’s horrifying enough to be reminded of it that it just feels awful and brings up all the icky feelings that possession is supposed to bring up.
    PLUS, if I remeber correctly, that’s also when she gets her hair cut, and it’s such a wonderful subtle and dramatic change that really highlights the intensity of the situation

    • @MichaelJW72
      @MichaelJW72 Год назад +2

      Hmm, Marcy became a fan favor within one minute, will be for the major suffering. Catra and Hunter had been suffering in one way, or another most of their lives. I know that Dipper is the lead character but I don’t think he was ever really consider the fan favorite the way that Stan or Soos were.

    • @santosic
      @santosic Год назад +2

      They were loved before, but the sufferring is what solidified them as forever fan favorites, at least for me. Hunter had been growing on people before we found out how much the poor guy suffered, and after that revelation, he skyrocketed in popularity. I don't think it's a coincidence lol. I guess we love to see people get traumatized 😅

    • @yunamchill9169
      @yunamchill9169 Год назад +2

      I think it's both. On one side, the fans love to be like caring for a character who's traumatized, but there's also this like position of power that you're in when you can basically decide to save the character or doom them. So I'd say both is good.

    4:31 Maybe Bill knew that Stanley made a copy of the Journal 3, and wanted to destroy the laptop and the physical Journal to avoid Dipper finding out about the portal because he would shut it down after reading Stanford’s warnings (basically what Dipper tried to do on Not what He Seems).
    So maybe it was Bill’s plan all along, because Stanley trying to get back his brother could’ve been Bill’s ticket to get into their dimension, and couldn’t risk Dipper or anyone else knowing about it, because thanks to the warnings on the Journal 3, they would prevent it.

    I think the reason Hunter didn't get a proper showdown with Belos is because of the limited showtime. s03 was supposed to be a full season, but disney cancelled the show for "not fitting the disney brand" (aka being to gay), so all it got was 3 hour long specials to wrap up a story arc that was supposed to be much longer.

      Same. Especially considering Flapjack was pierced only in silhouette, I wasn't all that shocked that it happened. In fact, looking at how S3 seemed like it was almost intentionally catering to a lot of popular fan theories, I actually have half a mind to believe it was a moment inspired by FANS (specifically fan art/comics). Hence why Belos phrased his words the way he did. _"That's right. You wouldn't want me harming your precious Palisman would you?"_ Clearly talking just as much to the audience as he was the characters, lol. You aren't slick, Dana!

    You know, after watching this video it gave me a bit of a realization when it comes to belos' posession antics
    His animorphing into a deformed mold parasite freak is a great way to show he's become a monster in his pursuit of delusional "justice" against witch kind, but its also a neat metaphor to show he's a parasite leeching of the isles and its people! (And it acts as a nice segway into him becoming a fucked up dark souls boss covering the isles in his grandpa fungus)
