  • Finrod Felagund was a High Elf in Tolkien’s works during the events of the First Age and The Silmarillion. His virtues and gracious deeds brought the Free Peoples closer together in alliance, and he even saved Beren whose line would go on to save the world multiple times. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about Finrod in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

This ultimately traces back to Aulë, the smith Vala, who hasted to make the Dwarves, and messed with the timing Ilúvatar had in mind. So it's not the fault of Elves, nor of the Dwarves themselves.

Finrod is an amazing character and is one of my favorite first age characters along with Fingolfin and Ecthelion. One of my favorite moments is the Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth. Also, how can you not love his loyalty to Beren and his showdown with Sauron. The children of Finwë were indeed fearless and hardy of heart.
He chanted a song of wizardry,
    Of piercing, opening, of treachery,
    Revealing, uncovering, betraying.
    Then sudden Felagund there swaying
Sang in answer a song of staying,
    Resisting, battling against power,
Of secrets kept, strength like a tower,
    And trust unbroken, freedom, escape;
Of changing and of shifting shape
    Of snares eluded, broken traps,
The prison opening, the chain that snaps.
Backwards and forwards swayed their song.
Reeling and foundering, as ever more strong
    The chanting swelled, Felagund fought,
And all the magic and might he brought
    Of Elvenesse into his words.
Softly in the gloom they heard the birds
    Singing afar in Nargothrond,
The sighing of the Sea beyond,
Beyond the western world, on sand,
On sand of pearls in Elvenland.
Then the gloom gathered; darkness growing
In Valinor, the red blood flowing
Beside the Sea, where the Noldor slew
    The Foamriders, and stealing drew
Their white ships with their white sails
From lamplit havens. The wind wails,
The wolf howls. The ravens flee.
The ice mutters in the mouths of the Sea.
The captives sad in Angband mourn.
Thunder rumbles, the fires burn --
And Finrod fell before the throne.
    --
But Finrod walks with Finarfin his father beneath the trees in Eldamar.

I had such a hard time remembering and distinguishing between all the sons of finwe when I read the silmarillion. this video was so clarifying! I forgot that Finrod was not only the one who pledged to help Barahir and thus hurin and turin, but the elf himself who established the initial relationship between man and elf!
I couldnt imagine things going well between men and elfs had any of the other noldor or even Thingol been the first to find men. Only Finrod's kindness and compassionate heart could have fought off the fear of the initial encounter. Thingol may have enslaved men, Finrod rejoiced in their differences and called them friends.

Finrod is probably not really based on a particular person (most of Tolkien's characters aren't). However, he and Glorfindel represent the best qualities of Elves. In the narrative, Finrod serves the purpose of highlighting the potential that all elves have to be powerful forces for good.

Thank you to the commenters who pointed that out! I appreciate it! I also wanted to clarify that I call Orodreth the nephew of Finrod for that was Tolkien's later intent, but it was never revised to be that way in The Silmarillion. My favourite elf whose character and deeds speak for themselves. Is often getting less recognition but in fact I'd say if his father, sister or uncle Fingolfin could say anything about him, they'd have nothing but words of the highest praise. His uncle Feanor surely had a thing or two to learn from him. As far as resurrections go, this must have been a no brainer for Valar/Eru :-) Thanks for the video!

Wow, I am glad I watch this character piece. I think compassion is a very under used character trait for most of the modern writing and TV shows I've been experiencing. So I really like hearing about this character. Most of the elves in other fiction I have been reading or gaming in are usually very xenophobic. It's nice to see someone who embraced everyone and everything that had a similar heart, which is the most important way to judge a person you call friend.

@@MR-qp5ej There is a difference, Tolkien's world is clearly fantasy and whether you believe in the supernatural aspects of Biblical history it is historical. Much of the ancient accounts like that of the Hittites were considered myth, but as we now know there was a Hittite empire. It's the same for many things in the Bible, it is a historically correct account. Luke wrote that Quirinius was the the procurator of an area that included Judea. For many years this was considered as proof that Luke didn't know what he was talking about, but they dug up an inscription with Quirinius' name on it and they found Roman records that said he held his position for only a short time. Luke as a recorder of ancient history is unmatched in his detail. Say what you want about the miracles, regardless the historicity has so far been unmatched. Only someone who was alive at the time would know small details like that, not somebody 100+ years in the future as is often claimed. They found a fragment of the Gospel of John dated to the first century btw.
Even the first chapter of Genesis lays out the initial conditions on Earth. Darkness covered a planet covered in water, let there be light and the thick cloud layer became like a cloudy day. The Sun and Moon were created in the first verse where God created the heavens and Earth. Establish the point of view and the point of view is from the surface of Earth, not outer space. I'm an old earth creationist and not for a moment after taking my first biology class did I think that something they cannot create in a laboratory create itself. Life was designed. Abiogenesis is exactly where it was in 1952 when Miller-Ulrey set up their experiment. If you've been told they created life in a lab you've been told a lie. Just the carbohydrate lipid cover has so many different ways it can go that the odds are worse than one in 10 to the 90 power and that's just the carbohydrates let alone the DNA/RNA matrix that controls the whole show. Did you know that DNA can re-engineer its own programming? That is how whales evolved in only 10 million years from a cow like animal. Think of it like a 1957 chevy transforming itself into a nuclear powered Trident submarine, except much more complex. Without DNA having a "brain" Darwinist processes could never create a whale. As the late widow of Carl Sagan, Lynn Margulies said, "It only explains the survival of the fittest, not the arrival of the fittest". She was an atheist and worked under that metaphysical paradigm.

@@MR-qp5ej I wasn't raised Christian unless you count celebrating Christmas with very little understanding of what it meant. Easter was all about egg hunting and chocolate bunnies, I had no idea that it was a celebration of the resurrection of Christ from the dead. You speak of the Quran and one of its falsehoods was that Jesus never died therefore no resurrection. Christianity stands or falls based on the Resurrection. All of the original Apostles except one died preaching that Christ rose from the dead. Read Psalm 22 which accurately describes the Crucifixion 900 years before it happened and before crucifixion was known. Christ fulfilled many prophecies. I became a Christian based on my study of science, I'm a retired biologist. The four Gospels are four different points of view like four witnesses to an event. They don't match at certain points because four witnesses wouldn't report the exact same details. The Gospel of John is very different than the other three because John was written last to counter the Gnostic heresy. Jesus claimed in no uncertain terms to be God Himself even say that "Before Abraham was I AM" I AM was the name God attributed to Himself in Exodus. The Jews knew what He was saying and started picking up rocks to stone Him for blasphemy. There is no doubt that Jesus claimed to be God and that He was crucified in AD 33. His disciples all, ALL risked their lives preaching about Him and the Resurrection. The Bible, miracles or not, is a very historically accurate Book. What will you say to Christ when you meet Him? Will He be your Judge or your lawyer, or advocate as the Bible calls Him?

Hey Yoystan! Great video. Also, is there a reason there are so many “Fin”s in the sons of Finwë? Like do they all have fantastic hair (because I’m pretty sure in the appendices of The Silmarillion it says that Fin means hair). So is that what the family is known for?

Wow what an epic elf. Very good balance of the heroic and that good guy salt of the earth vibe.. The first contact o f the two peoples was a great read. Feels real outside of fiction like a myth. His character is realised well over time as a thread thru many of my favorite stories. Your videos are so awesome. You and Geek Zone have real great narration and theories. That type of emersive contemplation and seeking consistency of thought is most welcome right down to your moral summation....the fantastic goofy art adds a lot and is and couldn't be better.. People getting high off this..like happy...Tops!

I have to say that I love your videos! they are interesting and educational! But I think that your voice could use some buffering in the lower Hz! I don't know how well you know sound stuff but I think that boosting your voice around 300hz would give it more depth and make it more pleasant to listen to
    Keep up the good work!!
