  • Not the intricate plan for the future that I'd promised and not a fantastic multi-day adventure into the wilderness - which I have also promised.
But at least this one might help explain my recent decision to quit a good job with no idea what will replace it, and to give you all some context when whatever happens next happens.
I filmed this one over the course of a fantastic ride up on to the Ridgeway on one of the first days this year that really felt like summer.

The weather is pretty cold for 3/4 of the year and I dont think snow goes well with cycling. They do have some lovely cycling lanes though with far less traffic. Personnally I chucked the UK and went to Portugal last year and havent looked back. Good luck with Sweden.

It's not so bad. The winter is longer than in the UK but only by a month or so and the summers are amazing. Plus I'll be right down in the south so even the dead of winter is not too bad.

congratz on yr decision, jobs come and go, families are forever.
My son is doing exactly wot yr doing, swedish girlfriend, at Uni doing computer programming, wants to move out there after he graduates, just texted him for some advice for ya, he says a work visa is harder to achieve than a partner visa, companies will/have to hire from sweden as its easier for them, a partner visa is easier but takes time, u can work on a partner visa as you full rights, but yr partner will have to earn a certain amount, its not a large amount, my son/girlfriend are 22 and it seems they can manage it , so its doable. He said with yr experience you wont have much issue going contractor/freelance over there, so dont over think it tbh.
also remeber sweden has Allemansrätten , the right to roam! no more stealth camping! but there are bears and moose, so swings and roundabouts, lol but think of the vids you can make over there!!
good luck on yr adventures, that kids looks a handful and a joy...ATB WJ

I quit my last job because I was being floated to various roles as an OB/Neonatal nurse on a daily basis. Since I had experience in Labor and delivery, postpartum, Antipartum, Level 2 Nursery, and Pediatrics my role and patients would sometimes be changed 6 times in 1 shift. I would start out as a labor nurse, then go to postpartum/mother/baby and aquire 3 more couplets plus the 1 I just labored. Then if we had a sick baby I would get pulled to the Level 2 Nursery. Then I may wind up in Peds or being pulled back to the other areas. The last shift I worked there I had 13 different patients. I had to not only provide care to these patients but I also had to chart on all of them and give report on all of them. I was not paid for my extra work and I was the only nurse who was being used in that way.

I fully understand your pain and I tip my hat to you for even trying!

Just over eight years ago I was forced to leave a job I loved but after six months I realised that job was slowly killing me. I got a full pension so money was not an issue. I've had several jobs since all of which i went into knowing full well that, if I started to hate it, I could just throw my apron at the boss and walk out - that is incredibly empowering. I know teach kids on road cycling skills and love it. I get to ride and I also get to ride my own rides on my days off. It just takes that initial leap - mine was forced on me but it's no less nerve wracking . Good luck - I'm sure you will be fine whatever you end up doing.

Jethro, great video mate, and yes go for it, Sweden Calls. We should not ever restrict ourselves due to the place of our origins as the world is your oyster. There's no fun in life if we all had a crystal ball and knew what laid ahead.
Another thing I'd like to say is if you wrote and expressed yourself as you the way you speak, I reckon you'd be a great Author.

In 2001, burned out from the Y2K free-for-all, I quit the IT world, farmed off my various employees to various customers, and shut down my consulting company. We bought a cruising boat and went to Mexico. Our lives took various twists and turns, almost all positive, and we find ourselves 20+ years later getting ready for retirement. We wound up in a place we never expected to settle, not Mexico, but we are quite happy here. Sure, we might not be as financially well off as we could have been, but we will have a comfortable retirement, and we've already had more adventures than most people ever dream of. I guess the rambling end of this is, take a chance. Life is uncertain and you shouldn't find yourself in your twilight years regretting that you didn't take that chance.

First video I watched on this channel and it made me sad. Probably wasn't meant to be sad and it's a consequence of my biases and convictions, I guess. Leaving good career in UK to go into unknown and - not sure I understood that part right - take care of a child that was fathered by someone else, is definitely not something I'd take. I mean... why doesn't she come to UK? Any kind of relationships should get a final judgement after max 6 months - it worked? Great. Not really? Goodbye, forever, don't pick up the phone, don't answer emails. She made her choice, and the choice is not Jethro.
Malmo... had a friend there (is actually a programmer), visited. Didn't like it, crappy place. Lots of wind, lots of crime, lots of no-go zones where rules different to the rules of law are being enforced. Crime capital of Scandinavia. People are weird, my friend was telling me about atmosphere at the office. When they have parties, they bring their own beer. And then also take home whatever is left. I mean that's just weird.

    • @JethroJessop
      @JethroJessop  Год назад

Nothing to be sad about, it's all down to perception really and there is no right or wrong.
For my part, it wasn't a good career. It was a comfy job but that isn't something to hold onto for its own sake. No point earning money if you don't have a plan for it.
I love Sweden, always have, and it has a lot more to recommend it than the UK.
I guess some would choose differently but for me that would feel like a waste. Much better to choose the adventure I say!

So when you go to Sweden will you rent out your cottage?
As regards your ramblings, you gotta work out what is important to you. Clearly work has been important to you up until now. Seems you had opportunities of not living a singular existence but declined it. Faint heart never won a fair maiden Jethro. Are you a commitment phobe? Louise looks a fantastic girl. Maybe you are thinking you can't let her slip through your fingers any longer. The job you do, Java Script Developer could you not do this pretty much any where in the world? If you never try then you can never succeed perhaps with some melancholy you are now realising this. Good luck with your move to Sweden and plans. You could always work for IKEA.

    • @JethroJessop
      @JethroJessop  Год назад

No idea about the house. At some point I'll either rent it or sell it but for now it's my UK base because I can't be in Sweden full time until I work out how to sort out a visa.
Work was never actually important to me. I was lucky to stumble blindly into something I was quite good at and that paid well. This however let me get a bit complacent and with zero desire to climb the ladder I just hung out where I was.
I'm not averse to commitment at all. What I'm bad at is deciding what I want to commit to.

Life is a journey & sometimes we come to a crossroads in our lives with a decision to make (which way do I turn or do I keep going along the same path 🤔) life is full of uncertainty & the only way to find out whether we have made the right turn or taken the correct path is to follow our instincts & if that particular path isn’t so rosy we push on to another destination my friend life choices aren’t always easy but they are ours to make 👍😎

Thank you, I will actually do that. I need to sit down and update my LinkedIn and all that stuff so you may well see me pop up.
I might not get straight to it though, I'm quite looking forward to being unemployed for a little while ;)

Thanks for taking us through your (beautifully narrated) thought process. It seems like the only choice that won't lead to major regret in future. If it doesn't pan out and you end up back where you are, what have you lost but maybe a couple of years. Best of luck and I can't wait to see the next few chapters.

Exactly, and who is to say that if I stick with the job that won't fall apart as well? I could lose my work to an AI and still lose a couple of years.
This way its my decision and whatever happens, I tried for something important. No regrets!

Great choice on your behalf, both for choosing family over corporate life and for moving here to Sweden. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out with the visa. Both Brexit and the current government here in Sweden sure hasn't made it an easier to move here. Just a heads up, they are passing a new bill that will be in effect October 1st, that will mean that you will have to earn at least 26 500 SEK (2000 GBP) for an employer to hire a foreign employer. Currently it's about half that, so it will be a lot harder come this fall.
Anyway, enough with all the boring numbers and rules, you are very welcome here even though you're settling in the wrong end of the country ;-) Looking forward to showing you around what Sweden has to offer in form of desolate forest roads!

That's good to know. These are all the kind of boring details that I'm going to have to find my way round. I'm not looking forward to it but I know it has to be done.
I am looking forward to the desolate forest roads though! And should things work out to the best possible plan then we'd probably head further north in the future.
If/when I get settled though I'd definitely be up for a trip north. We could do a colab video!
I never managed to catch up to your subscriber count ;)
      Thanks for the advice

There's no way to know whether all the bits of life in sweden will work out for you, but as an Old shiny warm, I can guarantee that if you commit your time and your love to that little girl, Old Jethro will look back and say, "*That* was the best thing I ever did"

I can't wait to get back out there. The future will be what it will be but ever hour spent digging holes with Minna is an hour well spent (she loves digging holes)

      Sadly not ☹️
The motivation is to spend time with Louise and Minna so I can't really spend great chunks of my very limited visitors visa days cycling back and forth.
      I wish I could, I don't like flying.
Hopefully I will do a back and forth by bike in the future though
