    TNA used to be so punk rock. Now, if we see them in a video game, it'll be as DLC in WWE 2k

    I loved the TNA video game. Wrestling games in an arcade format makes it feel more competitive whether your going against cpu or another player. I'll never understand why people want everything to be WWE and at the same time complain about WWE...

    So there's a few major details regarding the TNA video game and Midway that aren't taken into account in this video that's pretty important. Firstly, while true Midway did have little experience with wrestling games, this game was developed by their subsidiary studio Midway LA, a studio formally known as Paradox. Paradox had ALOT of experience in fighting games (Xmen Mutant Academy series), arena fighters and brawlers (ThrillKill, Wu-Tang, MK Shaolin Monks) and yes also Wrestling games with their work in the Backyard Wrestling videogames. The studio and game's development was led by Midway Veteran designer/programmer (and MK3 NightWolf actor) Sal DiVita (seen in the video) who played a significant role in development of Midways 90's coin-op hit WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade game. Another interesting tidbit... Sal DiVita years later after the release of this game (and closure of Midway), would once again be the lead creative director for WWE All Stars for THQ. And unlike most THQ/WWE titles that were mostly developed by Japanese studio Yukes around that time, WWE All Stars was Developed by their THQ San Diego branch, a studio which was composed of former Midway San Diego staff. Midway SD also had a hand in helping develop TNA along with its sister studio Midway LA. So WWE All-stars could be considered a kinda/somewhat/maybe successor to TNA... tho philosophically not really since DiVita was obviously inspired by his prior work in WrestleMania: The Arcade game with the over the top stylized graphics/physics accessibility and arcade-like combo system that WWE All-stars was built upon.
    TNA failed because Midway was already hemorrhaging money and on the verge of collapse, offering very little in the form of adequate resources and proper marketing (which isn't cheap by an means) or provide a means for the studio to make a follow-up to solid Sophmore effort with TNA. Also WWE had the video game industry on a chokehold with their video game offerings dating all the way back since the N64/PSX. They had set the bar far to high by then.

    To be honest, they still could make another TNA game. Especially now since they've brought back the TNA name and branding.

      I'm not sure about Midway Games' rep in the 2000s but if TNA were to have plans for a second game, they should have a really reliable video game studio with a great rep make their game

    • @freddiejohnson6137
      @freddiejohnson6137 3 месяца назад +6

      The problem is this game was made at the height of TNA's popularity when then were actually getting noticed. A TNA game now would have to be very low budget as their fan base is now tiny in comparison to what it was back then and a publisher with a lot of money probably wouldn't want to risk investing in a TNA game when they probably would struggle to make it back

  • @manmythmothman

    I had a love/hate relationship with that game. Played it, completed it, got bored, sold it. Bought it again, got bored, sold it (did that a few times). Bought it for other consoles when I got them, but same again. It was graphically superb and is still one of the best, the roster was fine, the attempt at a story mode was fine. The limited movesets and difficult pinning controls is what ruined it for me. They made a game that looked like a realistic wrestling game that had a mix of normal and arcade machine controls (is how I viewed it anyway). I'd love for us to get another, I'm pretty sure they did have a DS game and a mobile game, but to have an up-to-date version on a modern console would be great. Even if they partnered up with this Wrestling Code one just to be included, similar to how I believe it was NWA were in Retromania as a bonus? That'd be nice, just to have something.

    It never occurred to me that TNA Impact & Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe were released in the same year. Hell, they were released two months apart with Blitz: The League II sandwiched them!
    Also, the story mode to Impact is backwards! You should BECOME Suicide, not START as Suicide.

    I remember when this came out! It definitely didn't hit like they wanted but it still had its really good moments. Def was underappreciated especially because of the WWE Games being so good at the time. & the TNA game looked great! It still holds up today! The wrestler's models looked really good and having the five-sided ring was cool. Just lacked a lot of features & replayability Factor. Good Video my G, Keep up the good work my brother!🤘🏽✊🏾

    I used to enjoy playing three way ultimate X matches with my friends on weekends after school (no four ways in game for some reason). It was rough round the edges, and not very deep - but it was fun. I loved TNA in the late 2000s and I think this was a decent first attempt at a game. By no means a bad game, but if they continued building upon it it had potential.

    All these non wwe wrestling game makers need to do is make the gameplay servicable, and then stack out CAWs and give us an infinite career mode from HCTP along with free roam from SYM and an improved GM mode system from SvR06 with improvements
    Juat literally make the gameplay fun with arcade/sim options and tben take notes from 06, SYM and HCTP and set out to top that

    They had a really strong foundation/engine. They could have expanded on it the way Aki expanded on World Tour. Plus, for 2008, the graphics were incredible. One thing is for sure, though. TNA Impact was a better game in 2008 than AEW Fight Forever was in 2023. Also, it had a better CAW. Oof.

      @Jay_Digital 3 месяца назад +2

      If you look at both games they play practically identical as far as controls, sure the moves were exaggerated in All Stars you swap out Ultimate X with a Steel Cage, create a wrestler was still whack, story modes were still ehh. Leads me to believe if there was a TNA 2 it would've been more of the same. That said All Stars isn't really a sequel thats like saying Def Jam Vendetta is the sequel to No Mercy.

    • @EliteEasyE
      @EliteEasyE 3 месяца назад +3

      @@Jay_Digital Check out 616 Entertainment's Impact Retrospective. Same engine, same team and it's originally what they wanted Impact to play like.
      And Def Jam Vendetta is definitely a No Mercy sequel. Same team, made in 8 months out of the ashes of what was going to to AKI's WCW Mayhem 2 before WCW was bought out. 616 has retrospectives in the Def Jam games as well.

    there's some aspect that i think TNA game did better than AEW IMO, like the dev are new to wrestling game and they deliver it well if not compared to Smackdown VS RAw series. They also trying to create their own wrestling game style and also deliver unlike AEW that trying so hard to imitate AKI style. on the brightside is the dev ended up creating WWE All-Stars which i think a phenomenal arcade wrestling game. they only made two wrestling game and they're all fairly good and then there is yukes that been 2 decades in the industry but failed to deliver AEW:FF somehow
