  • While I'm on the homestead building a stone chicken coop, a wild turkey gobbles in the distance in my food forest and provides an opportunity to harvest a turkey and cook it in the wood cookstove in my outdoor kitchen at my off grid log cabin.

May I offer a suggestion? I have noticed your beautiful old wood stove top is looking a little rusty. My grandmother who used a wood stove regularly, use to ball up some waxed paper and rub it over the hot surface. Like magic it became shiny and black as new. It lasts a good while and slows the formation of new rust. I guarantee you will be pleased.
Oh yes, and thank you for all the hours of fascinating video and very hard work.

Nice woodstove! Surface rust can be removed by laying vinegar soaked paper towels on top and let sit for a few hours. Remove towels then sprinkle the area with baking soda to neutralize the acidic reaction. Rub with blue non abrasive scotchbrite and clesn off that with a damp cloth or sponge. Season with oil as with a cast iron pan.

I used 3" magnum 12 ga #5 shot in a 22 inch barrel modified choke pump shotgun. We had hunted 2 evenings and 1 morning prior. The evening before success we found their roosting trees, that was the key to success. This was in Northern Utah, the Wasatch mountains. About 5500 ft elevation. They will move up to about 6-7000 ft as we get into Summer. Based on the beard length, mine was 2 years old and weighed 15 lbs once gutted and plucked.

Shawn, if Mrs James isn't hiding from the bugs, y'all should look into pallet forks and the man lift for your Kioti.

My sister and I were the chicken pluckers and the instant you plunged that turkey into the boiling water that smell came right back to me! Now we’re talking the 30’s and 40’s. My god that sounds like a like a long time but there it was that smell of wet poultry feathers! I haven’t thought about that in many years! Haha
