      It would be great to hear Dave talk about the making of "Then she did" seeing it is such a "piece" by Jane's addiction, with the build up, tension, release etc. It's a great song with a lot of layers. And also how they where able to make those massive guitarsounds. Not only for this song, but for both albums in general.

      Anything off of John Mellencamp's Scarecrow. Ry Cooter, Kenny Aronoff Rickie Lee Jones and so many other great players. And Don Gehman did such a great job getting powerful drum sounds without going as far as most of the drums in the 80's did.

    Eric Avery is hands down the best bass player of all time (at least in alt rock music)! He even auditioned for Tool and Metallica and didnt took the gig, because he'll be forever remembered for those magnificent first two JA albums! Up The beach, Ted, Three Days, Summertime... it's all about the octaves and repetition in his playing! Very punk rock/post punk! He's one of the few musicians you can tell by ear who's playing, like the Tony Allen of bass! Thanks Warren for these kind of videos!!

      It's a killer of a song, indeed, and the quality of your content is stellar. As many songs by Big Star as you could manage. David Bowie, of course - any era. The songs on Paul Simon's Graceland. Depeche Mode. Soundgarden. Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie era Smashing Pumpkins. Southern Harmony era Black Crowes. The Pixies. Lee 'Scratch' Perry. The Minutemen.
      And some specific songs: Dusty Springfield's Son of a Preacherman. Mannfred Mann's cover of Blinded by the Light. Kate Bush's Hounds of Love. Doors' Riders on the Storm.

    Dave Jerden breaks my brain. When I watch him speak I expect him to say something completely preposterous and insane and then he says something I completely agree with, like troublingly so. When he said sound is simple, or easy, light is complicated. I was like "holy shnizzle!!!" :) I've used that expression myself. Dave Jerden might be the guy I didn't know was my favorite producer. I don't know if it would be possible but I'd love to see a "record drums with Dave Jerden" video.

    RE: the guitar sound. I've always heard what sounds like an unplugged electric mixed in, and hearing the isolated tracks I hear it even more. Dave doesn't remember how he got that sound, but earlier in the interview he says he tracked exactly that for Stephen to drum along to. He must have saved that and mixed it in. What a fantastic song.

    Jane's at their peak were untouchable. Had there been a follow-up to Ritual, it would have been transcendent. Ritual already was. The whole '87 - '92 Alt era was insane.

    • @Gcssdvnkloiutesc
      @Gcssdvnkloiutesc Год назад

      No, it would of bombed or been just mediocre. The first porno album would of been the next Janes album give or take a few tracks.

    • @m-funkshun
      @m-funkshun Год назад

      @@Gcssdvnkloiutesc Respectfully disagree. Sonically, technically, and atmospherically, DiStefano couldn't touch Navarro and it's all that + compositionally, LeNoble couldn't touch Avery. Listen to any of the B-sides, bootlegs, and one-offs released from that '90-'91 era and the stuff is fire. Farrell's beef with Avery looks to have been 100% ego-driven and of course, the drug situation by '90-'91 was totally out of control, but we all lost for their breakup. '96 and subsequent reunions featured the antics but the continuity and songwriting were already over. And w/o Avery, Jane's Addiction simply isn't Jane's Addiction. Avery's writing and deep, ominous, baritonic assault could never be matched, either by PfP or Chris Chaney. I remember popping in PfP's first album and it was like everything else that followed the '87'-'92 explosion... weak and a pale imitation of what had proceeded it.

    I absolutely love how nerdy and detailed he gets! There’s not really a discussion on which frequencies to boost and how much gain reduction the compressors are doing on any instruments, it’s all organic about the philosophy behind the engineering. Love it! The foundations of everything he says is tried and true of any audio textbook and favourite record you can dive into, so you can see his knowledge of engineering; however, his creative ability to experiment and accept any possibility and be willing to throw it in is something I love! Get some cosmically random and inconsequential event like forgetting to kick out a dog’s toy from the vocal booth and suddenly you have a defining sound of a record.
    I feel like his whole philosophy on music kinda fits together with a pretty interesting opinion on the universe (probably that “it just is” or something lol), would totally love to just hear this man talk for hours. Definitely making it a goal to get big enough to meet him one day lol
    His view on having that reference miking technique is really good - kinda the same idea as reference mixes. And then you start draw the connections about how it’s all about creating a vibe with the music (and hopefully getting lost in the experience) and the references are there as guideposts of where to go in this experience to make it sonically translate the best as a mic setup or final mixdown or whatever you’re doing. Can’t wait for more!!

  • @parnellitube

    I love listening to this guy talking about the drum setup. D12 on the kick, 57's on the snare, 421's on the toms, c12's for overheads (c60's if you are on a budget), and Radio Shack PZM mics for the room. That was the tried and true short list I remember circa 1990. Yes, listen to guys like him. They know what they're talking about.

    I believe Dave recorded mostly with a 1990 Laser Blue Ibanez 770. The same one he played in the “Stop” video, and a Marshall JCM 900 100w Dual Reverb. At least the overdriven guitar parts.

    Years ago I experimented with a different cymbal mic'ing technique to get more direct control over the cymbals and placing them in the stereo field more precisely. I wanted more focus on the cymbals than could be achieved with using 2 overheads. With 2 overheads the cymbals always seemed to be more distant and had too much of the drums in them. I placed my Nady large diaphragm mics over each cymbal about a foot above the cymbal pointing straight down. I had more channels to mix but the focus of the cymbals was so much better and richer sounding than the overheads that I now use this technique exclusively. The drums and cymbals now sound much tighter and present with more control in the stereo field. When I heard Dave talk about his cymbal mic'ing using the same technique, I felt a validation with my experiment that worked for me. To know a top level engineer used the same technique was awesome. Thanks for these types of interviews Warren, they are very enlightening and informative.

      you to steal the album.,
      and so I did 🤓

    I love your stuff. As a engineer and producer who grew up in the 90's Rap and Hip Hop are some of my favorite genre's.
    I know the Mixing community doesn't have the best opinions of people from these genre's but I was hoping you may cover some songs from there at some point?
    Stuff like Eminem's Bezerk produced by Rick Rubin would be amazing... Jay Z I know has worked with legendary engineers as well.
    Idk think about it! Love your work man. thank you

    Outstanding! I could listen to this guy all day. A few tip bombs were dropped...hope they found their targets.
    Thanks Warren, I'm just a musician that dabbles in recording & mixing but my mixes don't sound like garage demos on a cassette that's been left in a hot car anymore, thanks to this channel. Happy mixing everyone
    and many, many thanks to Produce Like A Pro! Content even a musician can digest.

    Excellent insight into Jane's and the recording aspects. Admitting my age I remember when Ritual came out and I think Stop! was absolutely the best tune by them and a great way to start an album. SO MANY THINGS going on in that song for an engineer and a producer to juggle and it was mixed with perfection. Always my go to track when I listen to them.
    Thanks for exploring and sharing.

    Jane’s Addiction was one of the first heavy alternative bands that came out with a really well produced and recorded album. We used to party quite a bit in those days and put on one of those records, we would just leave the planet and get lost in them.

    It was really cool to hear about the stacked vocals, and how the little discrepancies make the vocals sound like a crowd, and one of the main features of the new DAW's I am using is about lining up the vocals perfectly so they are stacked on top of each other. Which goes back into this recording being so good because it is "wrong"

    Love this one. Sometimes you just gotta embrace the random. My band just finish up a session where we got my 6 year old in some of vocal takes because he just really wanted to be In there with our singer. It made the process a lot of fun for everyone and ended up fitting the bridge really well.

    Great video...legendary producer engineer...I think they took all their avant garde ideas and put them aside for this hit which just bebops along. Navarro chicken picking came at the right time. It was like a crazy 60s dance pop song gone modern

    I love this interview. Especially when you guys start explaining the physics behind drum miking like the 9dB rule. The one technique I would love to all the details of is the double hi-hat mic technique. What’s the theory how you handle eq, compression and signal chain into the mix. It has to be the one area where I really struggle the most trying to get hats - open and closed - to sound right and sit well in my mixes

    For a room mic I would take my microphone stand with a 2 mic attachment I would use 2 sm58s and I would walk around the room and when I found the best sound I would plop the microphones exactly where my ears would be at the same height of my ears and at the same angle of my ears. Best live room mic sound I ever captured
