I just finished the game, and this video is a lot of fun. Here is another one not mentioned: when Fluffy said “would you rather I be a robot cat? From the future? Want to see my 4-dimension pocket?” (Paraphrasing from memory) when talking to Yakushiji, that was a reference to Doraemon, the blue robot cat from the future.
This is why I like to compare 13 Sentinels to Quentin Tarantino movies. Quentin's movies don't have much original ideas, he just mixes a billion references from other old movies, because Quentin is a huge movie freak, puts those references in a blender and the end result is pure movie bliss, you just like to identify those references over and over again. Kamitami seems to be the same thing, huge scifi freak, and managed to cram his billion scifi references into a single game, what an amazing effort
the fact they referenced Source Code is awesome . Heck even Nenji and Tomi talking suddenly in the station is already a direct reference. Also Nenji's design and demeanor ( Delinquent, a real softie, get pissed when his hair was mocked,, actually was rich and has a penchant for punching things as fighting style) ftom Josuke Higashikata from Jojo Diamond is unbreakable. Geck even the 4koma omakr manga acknowledged that and even made a drawing of Nenji jojo style and saying this iconic words : "You bastard..what the hell you said about my hair!?."
Which is made better by the fact that in the English dubs they share the same VA, the late Billy Kametz, who sadly died from cancer two years after this game's release.
Another one: Keitaro Miura his name kinda sounds like a direct reference to Kentaro Miura (mangaka who created Berserk), i may be wrong though... Great video! ;)
i love that word of mouth confirms this game is a love letter to shoujo manga. i started reading PSME and its so fun making connections what scenes the game lifted off from the manga. great work on the video, i love the discussion around aegis rim ☺️!
I'm very late to the party but my girlfriend pointed out that BJ looks a lot like WALL-E, and I totally agree. Also this video was amazing and blew my mind (almost) as much as the game itself did.
what an amazing game, I played 13 sentinels a year ago, and I haven't felt this much enjoyment and investment in any game that I played in a long time last time I felt this way was when I played Xenogears when I was a younger boy, more people should play this amazing gem it is truly a masterpiece thank you Atlus and vanillaware
18:47 it might be a coincidence, but in Please Save my Earth the protagonist also confuses two of the boys as being gay after mishearing their conversation, just like at the beginning of Iori's path!
What a fantastic video! I'm definetely an uneducated rube when it comes to sci-fi, but the love for the genre was visible in 13 Sentinels, so it's very nice having all the connections spelled out.
Amazing video!!! Congratulations and thanks!!! This game is on my Top 10 games of all time. Another clear reference from Terminator is the way they appear from the "time travel".
Definitely the best video you've ever done. Had a joy watching it and really wanna check out a lot of these series that inspired the game I didn't know about until now
This is a great video and an excellent documentary to look into the influences behind this game series, there are so many references which is quite incredible & the game itself looks epic, great visuals and style. Really enjoyed the video, great presentation, plus its also a great reference point to see what other games have been influenced from other stories and history, really interesting, Well done.
I love how you did this video, you did a fantastic job. I hope you keep up this kind of presentation every once in a while. I felt more informed then when I first got here 🌹
That game is packed with references I didn't even realize 😱💖 amazing work bringing it all to light. This game deserves all the recognition it can get and more!
awesome video! i watched source code because of this game (phenomenal movie btw) and now i have a lot more stuff to go through! sad that gunparade march doesn't have an english patch though 😭
This is a very late message, but first, I'd like to congratulate for a very good video compilation of the game, with that, I would like to mention 2 major references that were 1. Tetsujin 28, the "first" manga/anime about giant robots, in which the great machine would be used to defeat the united states but because of the creator's morals was never used, after the doctor dies, his son is adopted by doctor SHIKISHIMA and both went to use the machine for justice instead of war. Another major influcence, towards the end would be related to "Ideon" and Boku no Chikyuu wo Mamotte(as mentioned) asthe hubris of adults destroy humanity while it is for "pure" children to give hope for the future. With that there are a couple minor ones, as Fukushiji's "Mahou shojo" still having relation to giant robots in Bokura no (The dung beetle being a more vile Fluffy/Kyubei) and, by extent, The Moon manga, or a couple smaller gundam references in quotes or personalities. Even the "Kaiju" being somewhat of a limitation, as we see the monsters are machines, the "Metal kaiju" would be Kikaiju from Mazinger Z... and a "probable" Deimos being a reference to Daimos giant robot. The time limit too, something that would be originated in Ultraman and so on.
Loved the video! It's very interesting to see all references within this masterpiece of a game! There's also another reference not included in the video: when Fluffy says "I'm a robot cat from the future. There's a time machine in the drawer", it's a direct reference to Doraemon! Thank you for such an informative and concise video!
dammit, I should have wrote down all the references I thought of too while I was watching someone play this game Dx several were the same as yours but others were different, though I can't seem to recall what they were now >.>
girl who leapt through time also gets a direct reference when one of iori’s story nodes is called iori who leapt through time. awesome video! i knew this game was really derivative but i was still shocked just how much it ripped from other media. and yet it’s done so masterfully :)
Really enjoyed the vid, superbly researched, even if it's giving me slight guilt over all the 1980's titles that have been in my backlog for years. I swear one day I'll get to the likes of Towards the Terra, Megazone 23 & Tokimeki Tonight (& maybe finish Please Save My Earth). At least I've seen Stop! Hibari-kun & Sukeban Deka, so I could spend the majority of Okino & Yuki's scenes thinking "Yeah, I know what's going on here"
I want to wait for a more accurate translation, I am not a fan of the 'Creative Liberties' the localizers put in and is still in on the switch port. This may be the only game I would consider modding my switch for a translation patch.

Honestly, this video just reminded me why 13 Sentinels is so good
I never forgot this )

It's amazing how they managed to reference so much media and still made all the stories work together coherently. This game is truly a masterpiece
Dang, this was phenomenal. I knew a small handful of these references, but there are SO many, and this is exhaustively researched.
I actually really like the presentation of this video, especially the music, great video Gabby
Same, I couldn’t agree more
Another one: Keitaro Miura his name kinda sounds like a direct reference to Kentaro Miura (mangaka who created Berserk), i may be wrong though...
Great video! ;)
Knew some of the references but didn't realize the sheer amount of references from Japanese literature. Incredible research, and loved the vid

I just finished the game, and this video is WONDERFUL and informative. I need to check out all of the older stuff.
Super well done. The references go way deeper than one would think!
Amazing video!!! Congratulations and thanks!!! This game is on my Top 10 games of all time.
Another clear reference from Terminator is the way they appear from the "time travel".
Thank you! It's definitely a top 10 game for me as well😊
I love this game! And so many cool references to movies I love
Good video I like the effort for such a niche game, I can tell you love it
This is an excellent video, thank you
Definitely the best video you've ever done. Had a joy watching it and really wanna check out a lot of these series that inspired the game I didn't know about until now
you blurred out spoilers while leaving Lori's sprawl alone, OF COURSE I subscribe
What an incredible work ! Thank you so much.
Thanks for compiling all the references. Really made you appreciate the game more
Thank you for sharing !

I love how you did this video, you did a fantastic job. I hope you keep up this kind of presentation every once in a while. I felt more informed then when I first got here 🌹
Gosh I love this game and awesome job on the video! This had to have been a ton of work!
Going to replay it soon so thank you for this! I didn't know the more obscure, Japanese references.
That game is packed with references I didn't even realize 😱💖 amazing work bringing it all to light. This game deserves all the recognition it can get and more!
Thank you Nicky!! I'm glad you also loved 13SAR 🥰
Que gran video, investigaste mucho!! Gracias por toda la información.
Hi Gabby
larrue spotted
awesome video! i watched source code because of this game (phenomenal movie btw) and now i have a lot more stuff to go through! sad that gunparade march doesn't have an english patch though 😭
That is exactly why I made this video! If you watch more of it feel free to come back and let me know your thoughts!!!
amazing video! this should be a must watch for all 13 sentinels players

@@gabbmew Apologies! I totally didn't read the description LOOOOL
@PotatoKoko You're good! I appreciate the kind comment regardless❤
hi
Wow this was so well done. You have a new subscriber.
Thank you!!! this comment definitely made my night
great video gabb, very informative!
dang so many references
I so love 13 Sentinels though a sequel is unnecessary. I want Vanillaware to keep making neww IPs.
Goated video by the way 👍
This was really well made :))) Good job!
Thank you!
One of the best games of all times, hands down.
beautiful video gabbmew 👍
Incredible research. Go Terminator. Best depiction of time travel, ever. Even the physics are dead on. Cameron used to be God tier.
Return of the Queen

Amazing vídeo
Ayyyy Let’s gooo
The Men in Black Suits seems to be a reference to The Men in Black.
certified fresh
What about Zegapain? A virtual world with only a few real people who are able to come out and fight monsters in giant robots
finished this game yesterday. What to do now...
girl who leapt through time also gets a direct reference when one of iori’s story nodes is called iori who leapt through time. awesome video! i knew this game was really derivative but i was still shocked just how much it ripped from other media. and yet it’s done so masterfully :)
That was a lot obscure media that I have never even heard of. Not even sure you can access a lot of this stuff or are any good now.
There was only one thing I couldn't find! So it wasn't too bad 🙏

Yeah, this game's inspirations actually did catch me off guard despite never playing it.
(Okay wait but why didja show Phantom Menace instead of 1977 🤨)
🤣 good question 🤔
@@DuoBeard Ahhh it said that it was the OG in the downloads, silly mistake
@@gabbmew OG, technically yes, I know what you mean and I humbly apologize for ever questioning you Lady Gab 🌹

Yep! I'd have to check the song so I'll get back to you on that one
