How many boards would YOU break?? (honestly!) 👊

2 or 3 I bet!
@@bhawnaarora7180 You're confident!
I think this is pretty wholesome. You give people confidence with that whole board breaking stuff. I can see that guys and gals going home saying, "yeah a lad in a karate gi came up to me to break boards. i did not know im that strong."
That’s the power of martial arts 🥋
Bruce Lee was right. I've been in Tae Kwon Do 31 years and I've never been in a fight with a board. What boards do though is give people confidence. I've seen a person's outlook on what they can accomplish change after breaking a board.
Karate suit**
@@kennethlegendre Although, if you don't punch through the board, your hand/fist will receive the same impulse energy you applied, what increases the pain.

I have a lot of respect for the young guy. His hand was clearly already starting to hurt after 2, but he was determined to find out if he could do more. Had he held back on 3, because of the pain, he wouldn't have broken them. He clearly put his all into this.
Hahahah thanks, i really did! It hurt really much tho. And yes, i was that kid who broke 3 and tried 4😅😂
what a great analysis
@@fiske_duongg
@@fiske_duon I'm glad you pushed your limits. That's going to be a valuable tool during most things in life and most people are afraid to do so, including me for so long.

"Boards don't hit back." They still hurt like hell, though.
I would argue that the real lesson behind Bruce's message was not strictly about board breaking being perceived as a test of strength, but a lesson on not underestimating an opponent or selling them short. A weak or cowardly opponent is still capable of besting you, either by guile or unconventional tactics.
Interesting perspective!
Dude was not bashing Bruce Lee. It did seem that way, though.
Boards do hit back
~ newton
For the Lin Kuei!
*Newtons laws of motion have entered the chat*
You can see people’s mindset change as they look at 4 boards and they become tentative and as a result they pull their “punch” . Respect to everyone trying this and nice break at the end Sensai Jesse.
Nice observation 👀
I think a lot of it has to do with them mostly using their arm. Didn't really put their hip into it or their weight... Likely because they didn't know how to do it efficiently. So boards vs just arm, you're gonna bounce off eventually.
I remember the first time I did it, I had no problem seeing myself break 1 board. Once it reached 3, my first thought was how 3 boards would hurt me.
Especially as their hand's getting sore by then.
I love when people surprise themselves, they're so taken back by strength they didn't even know they had. I love martial arts for this reason and so many more. It teaches respect, encouragement, inspiration, sharing knowledge etc
Basically, a better way to live.
Thank you Jesse for all you share
You are a valued mentor to so many people ✌
Thank you!
most people never hit something in their whole life, so they have ZERO things to compare to their own strength. At least this is my assumption.
Traditional martial Arts yes mma nope
The first lady's energy was awesome. Much respect to all of the people that participated.
Kudos to all of those who tried regardless the outcome. I admire the kid, his hand was red and swollen and yet he tried again
I wanna be like him when I grow up
hahaha, Jesse you silly joker, you.@@KARATEbyJesse
@@KARATEbyJesse tackar jesse det uppskattas🥹. Jag va ungen med tie diy tröjan på ungefär 2 minuter eller något. Tack för att du gav mig möjligheten att vara med!
In my TKD school, we used to have to break boards as part of our belt advancement testing. To show off during testing sometimes, the head instructor would demonstrate breaking 5-6 boards at once with a knife hand strike. Always impressed me, especially.simce the rest of us never went beyond 2 boards at once.
Very cool! 👏
My instructor for tkd likes to make us one inch punch boards
I took TKD also. Speed breaks always impressed me
Knife hand strike? Like the karate chop or something else?
@Kwabee Ah I see, thanks
As a mixed martial arts practitioner rooted in TKD and Karate, I can honestly say that people can break more boards than they know. Great work mate!
You're the most wholesome martial artist on youtube. Keep up the great work, Jesse!
You’re too kind 😇 Will do!
I agree. He’s very down to earth considering how skilled he is.
love it i think that maybe some of the people in the video could have broken 4 but lacked the confidence to even try, thanx for the content
The real battle is on the inside 🧠
@@KARATEbyJesse that is half the battle
Yeah I think the lad with the cap could have done at least one more, but he didn’t follow true his chop. He draw his hand back after hitting the board.
With proper conditioning, training and mindset, it's ez pz.
Nothing beats that sheer joy everyone had when they realized they could break boards. Made my day
Great video. Those who say, "boards don't hit back" have never had one of the edges fly up and smack you in the face after a break.... or simply never had the pain of a board or brick not break.
Right on
I remember one particularly resistant board during a break test for my black belt exam. That was fun. :D
I have been in the martial arts since 1964. This is the best explanation as to why breaking boards is part of some martial arts. And this was really fun! Jesse is a first class gentleman interacting with the volunteers and demonstrates the true spirit of martial arts. A person is not being braced (as with the boards) when being struck. They are moving and the strike could be deflected depending on the position of the recipient. However, this demonstration is more about confidence and proper application. I felt many held back on the four board attack both mentally and physically. This was so much fun seeing Jesse as a wonderful martial artist, educator, and entertainer! First video I've seen of Jesse.
Thanks for your kind words!! 🙏
Oh, and thank you for your comment clarifying the "judo chop." I'm a nidan in judo and the only thing I ever chopped was lettuce, onions, etc.
you’re such a kind hearted spirit! it’s so wholesome seeing you making people happy and surprised by their abilty to break the boards. happy people like these still exist, keep up the good work!
The most impressive part of this video is that holding 3 boards for someone to break is a lot harder than breaking 3 boards!
Haha almost 😝
I considered this as well too, need a decent amount of wrist strength to not slip under impact.
What a hoot. Glad you found people up for it!
Lucky me!
Thank you for always representing Karate in a positive manner, for spreading awareness of Karate, while also making it fun & interesting! 🙇♂️
When I trained in taekwondo as a kid, every belt test required that we break a board. When advancing to bo-black, we had to break three. On your black-belt test, you had to repeat every board break you had previously. That was 13 consecutive boards. It's kind of scary those first few belts, but the main thing I learned from them is following through. You get hurt most when you hesitate.
He admitted that it hurts to chop . That's why he is my favourite master
The little guy with swollen red hand at 1:40 deserved some reward for his efforts...and he actually broke 3 boards...unexpected!!👌🏻
I've found breaking boards really helped with hitting the target correctly, like correct hand position & focusing on hitting through the board and if not done correctly, it hurts real bad.
I’m more impressed with how easily and comfortably everyone is speaking English, as if it is spoken as commonly as Swedish.
It's 8:15am and I'm watching your video with my morning coffee!☕ I see why you're a wonderful sensei, you were very kind and encouraging! More of you interacting with the public!👍
Good morning!! Noted 😄👍
for my black belt test, we needed to punch through 4 and kick through 5, and also swing our forearm through a 2x2 wooden pole. good times
Hardcore!!
my uechi ryu renshi don’t play lol
How do you do that? Condition you're bones over time? Thank you!
@@becky2235 for punching and kicking, you just focus punching through the boards. it might knick your knuckles but it is what it is. in my style we conditioned our forearms over time against another person, just banging them into one another. for the pole during the black belt test, we never really prepared for that. we kinda just put mind over matter when presented with a situation we didn’t prepare for.
@@hashtagjohnpaulI also took Uechi Ryu so I understand the body conditioning. But my dojo never got into the board breaking. I moved away before brown belt (I forget how many stripes I had on my green belt) and didn't have a Uechi dojo close enough to continue my training. It's been years, and I fear my body conditioning is back to white belt levels.
This literally proves that Karate is not all about punching and kicking, but also has to do with having a positive mindset, strong determination and confidence. ✨
It's about making firewood.
That's great Sensei Jesse! Showing "ordinary" people how they don't know their force limits and also giving them confidence! Congrats! 👍🏼👍🏼
I think this was very cool! I love how you give everyone confidence and support through it all! I haven't broken a board yet, but I will have to soon, and this video has definitely given me more confidence in my abilities, thank you Jesse!
Go for it!
@@KARATEbyJesse sorry just saw this😅. Thank you Jesse! Love your vids!!

Recently discovered your videos! They're a great watch! I started searching for Karate related videos as I've taken the plunge to get back into taking classes after a 15 year hiatus!
Going to be fun starting the journey again, I just wish I never stopped! Keep up the great content dude. ✌️
I always like suspended breaks (someone holding the board with two fingers) or tossing the board in the air and breaking it with a punch. The idea of "Breaking things" goes back to the idea that "Blocks" are NOT blocks, but rather strikes and the intent is to damage whatever limb presents itself, up to and including breaking it. It puts all the conditioning and breaking into context.
Cool! 👍
Speed breaks vs Power breaks. A suspended or a thrown board requires a really fast strike otherwise the board just gets slapped across the room still intact. A braced board only requires power with a moderate amount of speed but a suspended break requires a much higher level of technique.
@@KARATEbyJesse Think of the Tensho Kata from Goju. There is a 4 strike movement, done with the palm and back of the wrist. I had a Goju Shihan that could break 4 boards in succession, with that movement (up, down, inside, outside).
That's not about "power" (as in Muscle), but Speed, Focus/Ki and FLOW. It's the difference in thinking in Terms of BLOCK, vs. Block, punch, knifeedge, sweep, joint lock/finish...the FLOW of movement. You cannot be Rigid/Hard and still FLOW.
Well done Jesse sensei! I really enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing this with us. It is amazing how people who have never had any martial arts experience discover their power.
We’re all fighters deep down 💪
I came across your videos because of your Miyagi challenge video with Sensei Seth. Amazing work! I love your videos, your knowledge, your compassion for others and your dedication.
What a class act! Propper grain orientation and thickness, held correctly. You're a good man.
What a wholesome way to go about showing people that they underestimate their strengths, which comes from what your state of mind is currently in. Awesome video!
I appreciate that!
great video Jesse! tameshivari is not only spectacular but also an important psychological and spiritual training
Always got great energy, Jesse 😀 Breaking boards is great for empowering people and inspiring them to work on their martial prowess. This was an awesome idea.

@@KARATEbyJesse was it inside joke, because we do not strike face during kumite? ;)
I have so much respect for the persons who failed the first time and then went back to it and tried again. Mentally it is really hard to re-load like that, even harder if your hand is hurting a bit.
Absolutely love this video! So fun, especially seeing them succeed!
This was awesome!
And really encouraging to see men and women do equally well at this across the board.
It still infuriates me that after many many years of training martial arts, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, that while if regularly punched logs, sandbags and mittts/pads, I never ever tried to break a board. I know 100% that I can, especially the flimsy pine that gets used, but I still wish I did. That's weird to me!
Holding the boards correctly when stacking like that makes a difference. This was great and a lot of fun. Once people get past the fear and fully commit they can do so much more ❤🥋
Very true!
I love this so much. The excitement on people's faces when they broke the boards is good for the soul. ❤
I wish I'd run into you when you were doing this, this was awesome. It was also great showing how you broke them, you can really see the determination required for that strike.
How many boards can a karateka chop if a karateka can chop boards?
What did you call a pig who does Karate? A pork chop 🐷
@@KARATEbyJesse what do you call a cow that crosses its legs when doing kicks? Lean beef 🐮
0:13 why did he do that? It’s a living being too.
i enjoyed this. the innocence of it all, revealing the power behind the message
Go Jess ! Your videos are the best because of your humanity and enthusiasm.
I wish I was there to try this.
Amazing! Bruce was right - the board didn't hit back. :)
Neither does a heavybag 🥊🤪
If you think about it when the board doesn’t break you could say that the boards hit your hand resulting in more pain than if you went through. It just occurred to me when I read your comment.
2:54 ayo cameraman sussy boom boom 💀
This was a very creative video. Love your vids man. Cheers!
I love your contents that you already shared and the way you teach us.
I can always count on a video from Sensei Jesse to make me smile. Also, I will never get....board. See what I did there? 🤣🥋
Love that!
the wooden boards we break at competitions are 2.5 cm or 1 inch thick. I don't think that will work for most people.
what also strikes me is the position of your hand. I have been taught to fold the hand upwards with shuto so that it will facilitate the edge of the carpal bone because it is very sharp and hard.
Nice! 💪
Amazing really!
And good you showed how your experience affected your skill at the end!
Entreting myself and praticting my English Listening with your videos. Thank you!
In what my teacher called "traditional Taekwon-Do" (apparently it should rather be called Tang-Soo-Do) we used to break 2,5cm boards, but I don't think I ever broke two with my hands (but with my elbow and side kicks), but later we focused more on breaking roof tiles, where I had to break 8 for my brown belt test. I did manage 10 and failed at 12 if I recall correctly.
Awesome
Man forget the first comment I always feel like I gain more wisdom watching Jesse’s video.
That's the spirit!!
Great icebreaker and pick up dates!
Jesse, I simply love you bro!!! You are incredible in many different ways 😊🙌
Are those boards 3/4 inch or a full 1 inch thick? Are they radiata pine? In my first school (kyokushin) female shodan was expected to break 2 1-inch boards all hand techniques and 3 1-inch boards all foot techniques. For male shodans requirement was 3 boards hand and 4 boards leg techniques. I was the only female student and didn't want to be treated in any special way, so was doing the same stuff as the guys. I'm 5 ft nothing bantamweight :)
Right on 👊💥
Literally every board holder ever: "and don't hit my fingers please"
Dear Jesse!!! This is awesome!!! I really like your job and the way you show this amazing art!!!

Exactly stated. Well done. When i break boards, i have this stuggle in my head that i can't or impossible versus i can and will. Sometimes i break and add another board sonetimes the boards win. When this happens, i go back to more training. But always the struggle. My Sabimnim reminds me to not think just trust my training. My body knows what to do. Just do. Love your videos and your encouraging enthusiasm.
You can do it!

I am a woodworker/sawyer and martial artist. Get em something with straight grain and lets see what is what! I hand drive 3 inch wood screws by hand ( no tools, just finger strength), I cant remove em, but what a show. I rediscovered kendo, and actually finally bought a wondrous Katana. such a personal tool, with a slightly civil edge.
Most of the time the pain is the limit for people, when you break through the pain in your head you can do things that is abnormal! good job!

Theatre teacher here. Most of my teaching is just about helping people release themselves from their own limits and fears. Stopping them from setting themselves up for failure by stopping to fear failure itself and just going for it. I absolutely love what you're doing here. Not into martial arts but this kinda made me want to research a bit and maybe find out if there are some tools there that I could use for trustbuilding in general.
Great video. Good idea for advertising too. It's just me and one or two other guys who been training wing chun for years. We sometimes get a few new people but they usually only stay 5 months or less because they fail to realize it's a lifestyle not just something they learn in 10 seconds. I do most the advertising and ads for us but it's one of those lineages where they dnt want you to show much. Its frustrating trying to advertise without being able to show anything. Trying to find ideas like this. Ofcoarse we dnt really do the board stuff. But still good idea to get people trying stuff.
These boards are so easy to break. But, it's a good way to teach people what the impact feels like, follow-through, technique, etc.
That first girl was so excited. I wouldn’t have been able to contain myself to say, “Boards, don’t hit back,” with the most serious look on my face, just to gauge her reaction.
Please do more of this😄
