Well done, Matt! Thank you for keeping a somewhat somber tone with this vid. They lost the lower cost full size that was a gateway to higger profit Dressers. Danielle's bike had a cool feature in this video!
Matt, excellent work as always. Your perspective is much needed by the suits at the Motor Company. Here's my take on the new Dyna as an owner of a 2007 FXDSE CVO Dyna and a 2021 Pan America special, which I happily bought from your dealership. Make the new Dyna about performance by producing a 100 cubic inch Revolution Max motor in a performance-oriented mono shock frame with semi-active suspension and a 28-inch seat height. Bar risers and a faring are a must. Then add a 200 rear tire.
Great vid Matt as always. I have no idea why anyone would want to go back to the old chassis. I’ve ridden almost all of the new softails and they are an awesome bike. My wife’s ‘22 heritage was a beautiful bike and rode amazing with the mono shock. Why anyone would want to go back to dual rear shocks is beyond me. Any motorcycle manufacturer that has done that has made much better handling motorcycles. I’m waiting for the day that the touring chassis goes to a mono shock instead of the silly system they have now with one shock doing one job and the other shock controlling another aspect of the job. I would have to agree with the 2024’s. My wife’s new street glide rides very well compared to my 2023 Road king even with SE Ohlins shocks. As a motorcycle mechanic I never liked the Dynas or the old softails after riding the new m8 softail I purchased one immediately. Handles far superior to either previous chassis and no funk wobble when carving the canyons. The m8's are also leaps and bounds easier to work on than a twin cam ever was. Factor in that for less than a $1000 in parts/labor m8's will throw down some serious power with just a cam upgrade. M8's are the best motorcycle HD has ever produced.
You’ll always have those that will take their Dyna and Evo to the grave with them, even though the M8 and the frames around them are better in every measurable way.
Though I have never owned an FXR of Dyna, I have ridden several and thought that they were adequate at just about everything. Currently, I own and ride a TC 88 Road King, TC 103 Heritage, and a hot rod 1200XL. I, also, enjoy riding my 2010 Victory King Pin which might be considered "similar" to a Dyna. H-D has not built or offered any bike in the last several years that I would spend my $$ on. What a shame. I bought my first new H-D in 1983. (still have it) When I wandered through the "Motor Company's" Sturgis demo rides back in August, it was like a ghost town. I don't see anything in their future that indicates that they will pull out of these doldrums, either. Good video, Matt.
Awesome video Matt!! Great topic about the Dyna. That was/is one hell of a bike. My favorite is the FXDWG3. The Dyna Low Rider was awesome too. Keep up the great work and always ride safe 💯🤘🏻!!
I was one of the outraged Dyna riders and about lost my mind when it was cancelled. It was and remains my favorite HD. That said , I eventually bought an M8 slim and later an M8 street bob. Did harley make a massive PR blunder? yes, in my opinion. you want to bring in younger riders but fail to see what they are doing! I ended up buying a low mileage 17 street bob again last year and while it may be not as technically advanced as the M8 softails, The M8's dont have the raw feel sound and overall satisfying ride the Dyna has. i do presently own a 22 heritage along with my beloved Dyna and to be honest , While the heritage is a superior motorcycle. I ride the Dyna the most. it's the feel! . I believe HD redeemed themselves with the Low rider S and ST somewhat, thanks Matt for the great video Randytbird Arizona
After owning many different bikes over many years I'm on my third Harley which I just recently purchased, a 2022 Heritage. This bike is by far the the most enjoyable bike I have ever ridden, it is absolutely amazing. The m8s are incredible! Everyone just needs to relax and stop being so negative and enjoy these wonderful machines!
Thank you for another well-made presentation, I enjoy watching them. I think Harley Davidson would have been better off if they would have renamed both families of bikes, instead of only the Dyna. Other than the name, there wasn't much difference between the Softail and the Dyna. By only discontinuing the Dyna, people had a more visceral reaction. Of course, there is no reason why they couldn't bring back the Dyna. It's no secret Harley Davidson has been struggling and reintroducing the Dyna line of products, could increase sales. However, people must realize that all consumer-based products evolve and change. Nothing stays the same. A stagnant product line will eventually cause losses to competitors. Harley Davidson does a great job of integrating technology with classic ascetics.
Great video - I owned 2 Evo Wide Glides here in Australia through 1990s early 2000s - my favourite Harleys of all time. I also owned an original Night Train Softail which I didn't care for that much and a Dyna Convertible. But the Wide Glides just did it for me. I hope Harley get through this difficult period and we can enjoy their combustion engines (maybe clean efuel or something) going forwards - I'd hate to see it go fully electric. And if they bring back the dyna I'll buy a new Wide Glide and park it next to my 2006 Screamin Eagle Vrod.
The reason for the Dyna being dropped is that the M-8 would not fit into the Dyna frame. It not a simple thing to strtch a frame to make a new engine fit, it take years of engineering to do so
The used Dynas still hold their value exceptionally well. I used to have a 2015 Dyna Street Bob, which I traded away in 2018. This past summer for no particular reason I was browsing through used bikes and there she was, my old Dyna for sale, for 500 euros more than I paid for it in 2017 😄
Great content!! a friend of mine got racked on his Dyna recently, he is on the fence on whether to fix his Dyna or purchase a Lowrider S, I am stearing him towards the latter, ive learned that the Dyna owners are a subculture within a subculture even though the Lowrider is a better motorcycle, one thing for certain as you said, the used market on these bikes is huge and something that the company could tap into like a one time only , like you said it all boils down to cost
Your videos are great. I've only had Hondas and while I can't afford one, between u and Thrashin, you guys have made me want an HD. I'd love a Lowrider!
@kurtschroeder368 I wish I could. I currently have a bike I'm financing. I can't afford another. I'd just really like a lowrider/ST in addition to 🙂. But thx. 👍🏽
@@kurtschroeder368 The Softail Standard is so sick though and you can always buy an ST fairing or FXR fairing for it and build it into your own custom Lowrider ST. You can even swap the tank some day if you want that extra gallon and a half or so. I had the same bike and it was so fun. The thing rips, it's so easy to handle once you get used to it, leaning into turns and hearing those pegs scrape, the rumble of the bike... goddamn. I ride a touring bike now because I don't own a car and I just wanted the comfort and utility for two-up touring, but in a few years I'll probably grab a used Softail Standard to wrench on and customize. I'm telling you in 10 years it'll be the next Evo Sportster as far as what bikes people choose to chop and bob.
Streamlined production didn't kill the Dyna alone, as stated in the video the M8 engines would see the need for developing/modifying the Dyna frame which might not have been viable. Ending the Evo Sportster line was a worse business decision, the new iteration is not an entry level motorcycle pricewise and fails in both look and feel.
Definitely not an entry level bike because it is the 3rd fastest HD made. The first 2 are also Rev Max engined. I'm 68, and have been riding HD's since my early teens. I bought a Nightster 975 and absolutely love it. To the point I may sell my Road Glide. It's an incredible performer, and better than the Dyna's were.
@@MattLaidlaw I have always felt the Dyna framed models as oversized Sportsters. Good concept, but required a separate production line. Maybe the Motor Co. didn't want to risk or deal with another "death wobble" situation. The Dyna branding is a strong part of the HD heritage and seeing it return at some point in the future could be a big win for HD. Regretting selling two bikes earlier (Ducati and Triumph), I am keeping my Evo Sportster.
I had an FXRS Low Rider from 89-94. Loved it. I have a 2020 Street Bob now after owning everything from Knuckles, Pans, Shovels to many customs. The newest softail model in any configuration is a great bike. No need for another Dyna. They might want to focus on toning down the woke BS instead.
I came into Harley getting a sport glide and wasn’t a part of it when this happened, but a few years down the track, I still don’t see guys getting into the softail. Krusei put dyna shocks on a m8 softail and said it’s the best bike he has ridden. I feel like they missed an opportunity to keep building that scene. Now it seems all those dyna bros are getting baggers, so maybe that was the game plan all along. The up sell
My 2017 LowRider has been set up just like I like it, 555 cams, Bassani pipes, powervision and target tune. She runs great!! And is the last new bike I buy, restoring a 1989 Sportster now.
Bold video for a dealer. But perhaps not entirely unjustified? I've driven a Dyna. A 2015 Fatbob 103. This one rode perfect. Also it has a "longer transmission" than my tourins after it. I rode it back from Bike Week Faak am See in 1 rush from 2022 to Holland! No problem! Now I'm on a 2024 RGS in Industrial Yello/Vivid Black. Fits my height better with 6.2'
Yeah they replaced the sportster with a Honda shadow and just put the name Harley Davidson on it😂 I will never buy the new sportster it's embarrassing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Kruesi originals has a rear frame for those softails to have outside mounted shocked. Just watch his videos if you need to see where performance riders and stunt riders are saying about the softails.
I like the Dyna and a smaller Street Glide or Road glide is appealing Though in my mind a new Dyna it is a step backward. It only has a place in our memories. 🇦🇺
I’ve put 5,000ish miles on my 2009 FXD since I got it about a month and a week ago. I could of gotten a 2018(maybe 19) M8 soft tail for like 2k more - but the 96TC called out to me. Haven’t regretted my choice at all. Also really enjoying only having a 120 dollar payment. I do see a bagger in my future for crushing more serious miles but I got a lot of work to do on the Dyna first.
The new softail frame is fantastic… sure the old dynas have a particular style but this is how vintage gets its charm. Because they don’t make them anymore. Classic second hand markets will form around the dyna but harley needs to focus on the future to keep themself competitive as a business. Monoshocks ride better and the more models they can make on the same frame the more efficient their R and D costs per bike become.
My 2010 is the only vehicle I've ever sold and bought back. The ONLY thing i wish is that someone made a good electronic cruise. I love the lowrider s, but my dyna in particular has a lot of sentimental value
I've had several big twins (and a couple Sportsters too) but the Dyna wide glide was my favorite big twin. Sad to see it go. It's the one of my bikes I wish I still had :(
There are plenty of used ones. And OMG, the value is going up. I gave up on HD in '93 when I got screwed out of an FXR that I committed to 18 months prior. I signed the sales agreement and the HD dealer swept me aside when the machine finally showed up. Yea, the good 'ole days of screwing the loyals so they could sell the thing for more. The whole Dyna era passed me by because of that crap. To me, 1993 is not that long ago. It took me until 2023 to get the itch again to consider a new HD. So, I have my '23 FXLRS that I modified and continue to do so. I would have liked to taken part of the Dyna era but the brand soured my spirits in '93 and I decided to ride Ninjas. Though the FXRS that I ordered would be quite valuable now. I can still buy a used Dyna.
I have 97 and 09 Dyna's, just bought a 23 Softail Standard a couple of months ago and I have to say as far as power and handling it's a lot better than the Dyna's.
I miss my old Sporster and later my M8 Lowrider but I firmly believe my new Triumph T100 is far more suitable for UK roads. I just don't feel so cool anymore😢
Bro, Triumphs are some of the coolest bikes on the road! I've got a Lowrider ST, but I've always loved Triumphs and actually started out on a Speedmaster. Looking to buy a Scrambler 900 as my secondary bike
@@tomoates8568 You are right, Triumphs are cool too. Just you cannot beat the rumble and presence of a big V-twin. Thre Scrambler 900 is a sexy looking bike for sure. Cheers.
People can complain all day but what you can’t deny is that the new frame and setup is far superior by every measurable metric. I also think with sales of all of these bikes down, two different frames serving the same general purpose and with so much overlap just didn’t make sense. Yell at HD if they do or don’t, someone will gripe either way.
I love my dyna, i think i would ever change it for any other bike... i learn to ride with this bike and i dont think i would ever ride another bike if finally i have to sale it... great video bro... Greetings from Peru!!!✌
Death of the original Softie too. The Softy had a frame that echoed the lines of the old rigid frame big twins. The new one echoes the lines of the 45" WL frame.
I agree, the "proper softails" could of had a bigger triangle swing arm then at least would of been one more difference to the "dyna" models. Without the big stock exhaust covering it up I cant unsee it. Oh well 3 older softails now I'm on a bagger. Not sure what the specs say, but they also look small to me? A baby Breakout or Fatboy I could not see myself on one, so I skipped that generation.
This wasn’t the first time HD f’d up like this. Buell was finally hitting its mark with the 1125R, then they chopped it. The people running HD aren’t bikers. They’re posers.
All these young bucks talkin trash about Harley Davidsons... I'll PUSH a Harley before I'd ride ANY other bike! Do they ALWAYS do the best things... no. But u name me 1 company of any type products that does. I love what they have built. True American Iron!
I bought a new left over 92 Dyna custom in 93. I rode it to Sturgis and back from New Mexico. I loved that bike. I remember in Sturgis a lot of guys made fun of it. I didn't understand why. It was kind of funny by the 2010's they were a hot item. A man ahead of my time I guess. Lol
@ If you go back and read the reviews that pro riders and many that review bikes for the big Motorcycle magazines out there, all of them agreed that the Dyna was the BEST all around bike that Harley ever made. Light enough for city riding daily and also good for the long distance ride with a good seat and a windshield. I have never watched Sons of Anarchy myself, not one episode. My next choice of bike would be an Electra Glide. The best riding bike I have ever thrown my leg over.
Personally, I think 90% of corporate don’t even ride. As I’ve watched the moves H-D makes, I’m sometimes shocked, but then I remember why the MC’s of old would never buy a Harley from a dealership. I’ve owned a Heritage Classic (2021) and it’s a good bike, but the Low Rider looks too tall and short. If the Motor Co. got rid of the current CEO, 99% of the board and maybe listened to real riders more… nay, they’d still screw it up that’s their history, screwing us and making motorcycles based of what they think will please their corporate investors over the bikers that ride these over priced machines (that’s another topic). I’ll never buy another motorcycle from a dealership again. Most of them lie, cheat and forget you once you leave the dealership. I loved my Super Glide and was thinking of buying another one. Love your videos Matt, especially the road trips. I love the road! I have a’21 RGS in Billiard Teal and chrome.
Haha. I think a lot of people believe they should have renamed it all together but then they’d be throwing away all the Brand equity of the softail as well.
I wish Harley would do an update of the V Rod. This bike was a whole separate category. I love the way it drank the wind! It was easy to handle hitting high speeds and looked great. I am sure Harley could improve it with newer tech.
They lost a new motorcycle sale in me. I was going to buy a Dyna with a new M8 engine. And then this happened.. The new softails are still ugly and sin to me. It didn't change for the better from a chassis standpoint, and so I went out and bought a slightly used late model Dyna. Still no regrets and probably will just buy a Rushmore Street Bob when it's time to upgrade just to spite the HD brand.
The Hitler parody had me rolling on the floor laughing.😂😂😂
I love how Steiner becomes Dyna - perfect symmetry
Haha that was a good one that was circulating at the time.

I would at least like to have the option

Other than the name, there wasn't much difference between the Softail and the Dyna. By only discontinuing the Dyna, people had a more visceral reaction. Of course, there is no reason why they couldn't bring back the Dyna. It's no secret Harley Davidson has been struggling and reintroducing the Dyna line of products, could increase sales. However, people must realize that all consumer-based products evolve and change. Nothing stays the same. A stagnant product line will eventually cause losses to competitors. Harley Davidson does a great job of integrating technology with classic ascetics.
Great video, Matt!
Great production Matt, I agree with everything you discussed 👍
Not the video we wanted, but the video we needed. Thanks Matt Laidlaw. RIP Dyna 1991-2017
Sincerely
Still grieving DynaBro 🥲🏍️
This is a great video!
great video ! always interesting content you have ! thanks !
Thank you !
Great video!
Thanks, man! I appreciate that.
The reason for the Dyna being dropped is that the M-8 would not fit into the Dyna frame. It not a simple thing to strtch a frame to make a new engine fit, it take years of engineering to do so
Well done Matt! 👏🏻
Thanks for this, found it therapeutic.
I bought my Dyna Street Bob new in 2017, I'm still riding her and she's still as strong as ever.
Enjoy, the Street Bob is a cool bike
As a proud Dyan (Wide Glide) owner I was not aware of the history behind the line's demise....thanks Matt. Bob, Dubai
Thanks for checking it out Bob. Thanks for the comment. Glad you got some good info from it.
The used Dynas still hold their value exceptionally well. I used to have a 2015 Dyna Street Bob, which I traded away in 2018. This past summer for no particular reason I was browsing through used bikes and there she was, my old Dyna for sale, for 500 euros more than I paid for it in 2017 😄
Man, I love my softtails. My 2022 Heritage absolutely rocks along with my Lowrider ST.
Never knew the Dyna, so I dont miss it.
Great video. Thanks.
Thanks for the update (reel deal) have a 81 shovelhead time is jetting need to ride more where to go
?
Your videos are great. I've only had Hondas and while I can't afford one, between u and Thrashin, you guys have made me want an HD. I'd love a Lowrider!
There are deals out there right now, I just bought a 23 Softail Standard with 230 miles and 17 months of warranty left for 9500 bucks.
@kurtschroeder368 I wish I could. I currently have a bike I'm financing. I can't afford another. I'd just really like a lowrider/ST in addition to 🙂. But thx. 👍🏽
@@MightyMouzMoto I feel your pain, I would love a Lowrider ST, but it's out of my price range
@@jaydella it's a great riding bike, really easy to throw around, I like it way more than I thought I would.
Objectively a better bike but different feel from the classic engines.
Yea good point that maybe I didn't stress enough. The M8 wouldn't just "plug" into a Softail or Dyna frame.
I still have my 2017 FXDLS going strong and I’m never selling
I had an FXRS Low Rider from 89-94. Loved it. I have a 2020 Street Bob now after owning everything from Knuckles, Pans, Shovels to many customs. The newest softail model in any configuration is a great bike. No need for another Dyna. They might want to focus on toning down the woke BS instead.
M8 softail chassis is great.. it handles very well. I wanted softail slim, test rode old one and new m8 one... Big difference.
M8 chassis is a huge improvement.
I have a 07 Dyna Lowrider and a 91 FXRS-SP . And I definitely prefer my FXR over my Dyna.
Thank you Matt
Thanks for watching
Thank you for a great video! And I agree.. bring the dyna back!!!!!!!
Well done Matt.
The up sell
When Dynasaurs Ruled The Earth.
Fits my height better with 6.2'
I loved the fatbob. The Dyna was such a comfortable ride.
I'd be surprised if HD, Inc doesn't ask for the Hitler parody to be taken down. 😅
Enjoyed it!!!
Awesome video. Now to read the comments.
🤣 always the best part right?
I think this is one of the best videos you have produced.
And yes, i own a big block FXDX 👍
Thanks man. Hang onto that super Glide
😂😂😂 awesome video. Love the dramatic music. Ive never looked back - love my M8 Fatboy
And then they killed the sportster
Yeah they replaced the sportster with a Honda shadow and just put the name Harley Davidson on it😂 I will never buy the new sportster it's embarrassing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Maybe a future "Untold Harley-Davidson Story" haha. That was far less dramatic than the Dyna removal thats for sure.
Kruesi originals has a rear frame for those softails to have outside mounted shocked. Just watch his videos if you need to see where performance riders and stunt riders are saying about the softails.
I like the Dyna and a smaller Street Glide or Road glide is appealing
Though in my mind a new Dyna it is a step backward.
RIP Dyna 1991-2017
Matt great video. But I own a 97 Dyna Wide Glide. I will always have this bike. I like it and the bike out now just cost to much.
Fantastic story telling , Matt.
The new bikes are leaps and bounds better then then the old. Change is good.
But i agree the name dyna is cooler.
Thank you sir. Thanks for the comment
At 1:19 that is a rigid mounted shovel head. The 77 Lowrider
I still am liking my old 93 FXDL....a lot.....but then it followed about 50 years of riding rigid frames.....
I've had several big twins (and a couple Sportsters too) but the Dyna wide glide was my favorite big twin. Sad to see it go. It's the one of my bikes I wish I still had :(
I’ve never had a Dyna but I will die before giving up my 2020 lowrider
The price is going up.... the value is not there.
Smaller is sometimes better in the UK as I'm told. No one can compete with the "Cool" factor of a Harley though.
@@tomoates8568 You are right, Triumphs are cool too. Just you cannot beat the rumble and presence of a big V-twin. Thre Scrambler 900 is a sexy looking bike for sure. Cheers.
The great dyna lives on in my garage and on my roads. Fully forged engine and man is it roudy.
Hi from the UK , I ride a 2017 fxdf dyna fat bob 103 , brilliant muscle cruiser 🤙👏👏
With the money they wasted on the Live Wire HD could have had a new Dyna and a new Softail.
haha. It's hard to say what you need to be investing in for the future I suppose.
liberal laidlaw isnt gonna agree with you
People can complain all day but what you can’t deny is that the new frame and setup is far superior by every measurable metric. I also think with sales of all of these bikes down, two different frames serving the same general purpose and with so much overlap just didn’t make sense. Yell at HD if they do or don’t, someone will gripe either way.
Dirty Bird Concepts makes a rear swing arm with external mounted shocks for the softail. You can convert your softail if need be.
But why? Just buy a lightly used Dyna on CycleTrader! 👌
I love my dyna, i think i would ever change it for any other bike... i learn to ride with this bike and i dont think i would ever ride another bike if finally i have to sale it... great video bro... Greetings from Peru!!!✌
Love my 2004 FXDWG I'll never sell it, unless someone offers me silly money 😂
Lol
No, because they were in sons of anarchy. That's it. Not because they were good because they were not.
I have 5 bikes by far the Dyna gets the most love out of all my bikes
They should have called them new Dyna Mono Glide instead of soft tail
