I’ve got one onion that’s had a growing party while I’ve been recuperating from gallbladder removal. It’s doing so well on its own I didn’t want to just throw it away so I came here to find out how to give it a chance! Thank you!

I just stuck my onion into a bag of fertilizer when it began sprouting and it sprouted lots of leaves. I never peeled it and now I'm wondering if I doomed my onion... ._.

Same. I was gone for about 14 days and my purple onion left me a beautiful sprouted gift!

Same- I'd feel bad throwing out my onion so I'm going to attempt to grow it as soon as the ground thaws and it gets warmer.

@@faerie5926 Just grow it in your house if it's cold outside.

Wanted to reach out and thank you for recommending it as something fun to do with kids! My son is only 16mos old (so obviously didn’t help with the knife) but was so intrigued by the whole process and was tickled pink when I let him put the starts in the water! 👍🏻 Thanks again, I look forward to watching more of your videos as my backyard garden beds are built and filled!!!

Had a whole bag of sprouted onions and wasn't sure if I should just toss them or try and regrow. Will definitely try and regrow some. Thanks so much!!!

I've done this with scallions, and it worked. I have a sprouted sweet onion. I'm going to try and grow it, but since right now it is the middle of January I'll have to pot it and place in a window. If nothing else it will be a science experiment.

A question: Do you put the sprouts that are in jar of water in the dark, or out of direct sunlight, or in light?

    • @Planterspost

Yes. If yu just plant the whole onion then they will grow in close contact and will not form properly.

Just treat them as you would when growing regular onions and harvest them when they are full grown.

Probably best to do it now. You may well discover more seperations as you unpeel according to the video :)

Will the planted piece form a new onion or just go to seed?

It will form a full onion but perhaps smaller than the original.

    • @Planterspost

Onions can grow in very shallow soil, but I would choose to grow in 3 inches minimum depth.
