Thank you, it's a very useful tip! I don't know if you know about another useful thing with regard to onions, which I discovered by accident. That is to make a potent, very nutritious liquid plant feed from the water that you used to rinse an onion with. During a time of severe water restrictions my family and I began to collect waste water to use it for the garden. We put a small plastic tub in the sink and transferred water from that into plastic buckets. We also rinsed onions under the tap before chopping it up. In this way the little bit of moisture at the cut ends ("onion juice") ended up in the buckets, mixed with the water we used to rinse the onions. After a while we noticed that if the water in the buckets were left to stand for a while, it became more and more smelly. Natural sciences are not my strong suit, but somewhere I read that fresh onion tends to attract microbes or bacteria from the surrounding environment. It certainly seems that something mysterious happened when we left water that had even a little bit of onion juice in it standing overnight. The water became more and more smelly and cloudy, and plants thrived on it, they were so clearly revitalized. Since then we've been using it regularly, since we eat onions with practically every meal. At the moment we are considering utilizing it on a larger scale so that more plants could benefit. It helps that we've never cleaned the buckets -- it creates the ideal "breeding" environment for the onion water microbes. The smellier the water becomes, the more nutritious it seems to be. It's no use dropping actual onion pieces into the bucket -- that just creates a particularly revolting smell without noticeably affecting the water it is floating in. It's the juice (even just a tiny bit of it) that is able to turn the entire bucketful of water into potent liquid plant feed. Wishing you all the best!!
I heard it works. Thanks for sharing your experience. Haven’t tried it yet. I saw a couple videos from people in India and Vietnam using onion juice as a rooting hormone. I saw on a RUclips video just now that onion juice isn't really a rooting hormone, but it can be called a rooting agent: "Onion due to its antimicrobial properties when mixed along with other stuff will certain improve the results of rooting your plant cuttings. To prepare this: Take 1/4 Onion, add 1/2 cup of Fresh Aloe Vera Juice extracted from a leaf; add some Cinnamon of Willow bark into this (it's better to have presoaked it in a cup of water for about 24 hours); then add this cup of water into the blender and make it into a fine paste or solution; then strain out this liquid to use it as a rooting agent. How do I know when its time to harvest? I've had these purple onions planted for a few months now and it doesn't seem like there are any bulbs. Also got some stuff growing from the tip of the stem.
They get harvested the same way as if you were growing them from seed or set. You can move some of the soil away to peek at the bulb, like you would with garlic. The stuff growing at the tip could indeed be a flower head. Unless you're in the Southern Hemisphere, now isn't the time for bulb harvesting. When it is close to harvest time, bend the stem over to set up the bulb for maximum yield. Cheers Jennifer!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms thanks I'll try that.
I love it
I don't know what I am doing wrong I have tried to get the roots sprouting but it only starts spoiling. Can anyone make a suggestion that might work?
Hey Nat, perhaps try more water changes, cooler temperatures, and if possible, try to make sure only that rooting tip touches the water. That could help.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms thanks..I will try changing the water.
Is putting the onion tops in water first mandatory or is it possible to place them straight in the ground?
Not at all Wakko...I just like to see roots first before I try to put them on soil. It just gives me a greater measure of success.
what to do if molds appear on top?
Great video
Thanks Queenly! 2nd video coming in the next couple of days!
How long do you need to sproud in the water?
no videos i find tell me how much to actually water onions and how often
How often to change water? Thx
I'm on the third day now start the root on my red onion
Right on Andrea! Life finds a way! It's pretty amazing actually.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms , so is there a video showing actual onions that you've grown? I think I've watched all the videos, so I'd like to see the end result. Thanks. [Stella in Texas]
@@EstellaVRuiz Well, this is Part 2 of a series that I am filming in real-time. I can't film the future, so I am eagerly awaiting Part 3 as well! ;)

Also, if you didn't know that Leeks can also be regrown, check this out. They are super expensive right now, so I make sure to keep mine going and going and going.....! ruclips.net/video/ywYBm2_a67M/видео.html
everything you say sounds like a question...
now i cant unhear it 😂😂
Just to point out a small flaw in someone's video? He still has good info so really I don't GET what point you are trying to make except just sounding critical
@@treenafleming5691 It's just an observation I don't see why you're upset.
It's sweet though 😉
He’s the Chef Jon of gardening lol
Very helpful thank you!
I found an onion that had already had a green growth. I was able to separate out thee plants from the one bulb.
Can someone help me, why is mine shrinking? Looks like it’s dying.
Are you changing the water frequently enough? With onions, the water can go bad FAST.
What if the onion is not fresh it can produce roots?
Great question Charmain. I've had some pretty old bulbs still sprout just fine....but definitely the chances for success go down the older the bulb gets. Cheers!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms thank u sir
@@charmainamar9223 anytime! :)
I need to try this
Just watched the other video. I look forward to the series. Has anyone ever told you that you sound like Bear in the Big Blue House?
It's gonna happen fast.. I got these guys on heat and grow lights! Center shoots already greening up after 3 days!
Ok... Big Blue House.... I need to find this! Lol
Lol. Search the whole phase of "Bear in the Big Blue House" in RUclips.

I've been trying to regrow my onion using this method. Unfortunately, it always fail. The root grew a little, and then ultimately stop, while the onion itself start to dry out. The root is brown in color. Does anyone know what's going on? How do you prevent (and fix) it from happening? Thanks in advance
You need to plant the onion in the ground before the roots turn brown. First put the onion roots in water and wait 2 weeks before planting it in dirt.
I try for 2 weeks with your method and try differrent things. Its fake. It does not work. Ya will have roots only if ya dont cut the onions.
aw.if only onions could speak English!

Yep I remember Adrion Smith of the argos. Lions fan out on the west coast here. Much love for all CFL Fandom, but Saskatchewan is something else, big green machine..
