95% of the story telling songs are about people that Jimmy came across in his life, he is an INCREDIBLE songwriter

This song is not Autobiographical. It's a tribute to and a blend of Old friends of his that lived these experiences. He mentioned the 2 gentlemen in the intro who were the inspiration. One of my top 3 favorite Jimmy Buffett songs. Give "Havana Daydreaming" a listen for another great deep cut!

I think he was saying it was about some of the old winos in New Orleans he befriended. Mostly about one of the spanish-American war vets who was in his 80s at the time.
"Jimmy, some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way."

He Went Paris looking for answers to questions that bothered him so.
He was impressive, young and aggressive. Saving the world on his own.
The warm summer breezes, the French wines and cheeses, put his ambitions at bay.
The summers and winters scattered like splinters and 4 or 5 years slipped away.
He Went to England, played the piano and married an actress named Kim.
They had a fine life, she was a good wife and bore him a young son named Jim.
All of the answers and all of the questions, he locked in his attic one day.
Because he liked the quiet, clean country living and 20 more years slipped away.
Well the war took his baby and bombs killed his lady and left with only one eye.
His body was battered, his whole world was shattered. All he could do was just cry.
While the tears were falling, he was recalling, answers he never found.
So he hopped on a freighter, sailed on the ocean.
And left England without a sound.
Now he lives in the islands, fishes the pilings and drinks his green label each day. Writing his memoirs, losing his hearing but he don't care what most people say.
Through 86 years of perpetual motion, if he likes you he'll smile and he'll say "Jimmy, some of it's magic, and some of it's tragic. But I had a good life all the way"
He Went to Paris searching for answers to questions that bothered him so.
(Jimmy wrote this about a person he knew, an old man living in the islands. He may have based it on 2 people, but I seem to remember Jimmy saying the man's name at one point, and he only mentioned 1 person. But the "Jimmy, some of it's magic" line is supposedly a direct quote from his friend)

Seeing you evolving with Jimmy's music is a real treat. I have been listening to Buffett for 50 years and he has been a huge part of my life. When Jimmy died, I cried for a month. It was like one of my favorite uncles had died, and I'll never be over it.
Thanks for diving in deep, Jimmy's music is worth it.

As Jimmy said in the beginning, the song was inspired by a couple of old men he knew in the Islands.

The man has so much more to offer than Margaritaville and Cheeseburger. I consider this as one of his best along with Son of a Sailor and A Pirate looks at 40

If you listened to the next song on the record is his salute to his grandfather. And you've wasted an opportunity to find out more about our Pied Piper. And his song
False Echo's is dedicated to his father who died from alzhiemers. It's on banana wind

if you ever see Jurassic World, there's a scene where you can spot Jimmy running from some teradactyls while carrying a margarita in each hand, haha, he hops out his chair with drinks in hand, jimmy was great, he's got a couple songs that are just perfect songs

One of my VERY FAVORITE Buffett songs. First time I've heard it presented this way. Don't know that I prefer the traditional version. Was written in tribute to two friends. As a young man (20's) he went to Paris. 5 years later he went to England. Twenty years later, following WW II (about age 45-50) he left EWngland and went to the Islands amd lived a single "beach bum" lifestyle. Poignant, particularly to those who seek a solitary costal/island lifestyle

Thank you Ryan and Don for this song, my classic ballad Jimmy favorite. I should have known someone else would have requested it because I think all us Parrot Heads love this song. I hadn't heard this version before, only the studio and live at his concerts. It was more powerful, if possible than the versions I've known. Still sad Jimmy's left us, but I will never stop playing his music because if there is a heaven, the Parrot Heads who've passed on are having a great time. I'll send another replacement request soon, Don.

I believe this version is from the "You Had To Be There" double live album from 1978. It was the first live album kind of capping off the 1970's Jimmy. It was the first album I bought, and introduced me to the fact that his best songs never made it on the radio. Some really wonderful versions of his early, great, ballad songs, but definitely a lot of party Jimmy too.

@@GregIsAFan I will never understand why he was never played on the radio that often. There are so, so many of us that loved him and his music. He was awesome in concert, but his albums sold without radio play and I totally agree with your belief that a lot of his best songs were never played. I always bought his newest album without a listen because I knew they would have gems hidden within! I think he was never happier than when he was playing live. We all felt he was one of us.

The opening verse talks about Paris……during into he says he wrote the song about two old friends, a wino from New Orleans (Jessie Bartholomew) and another old guy in Chicago (Eddie Bolchowski (sp?) who had been in the Abraham Lincoln brigade. They to,d him stories of all their hardships in life, but they kept on keeping on. He wrote another song about his father and grandfather (false echoes and the captain and the kid). Glad you enjoyed the song, it’s a great song

He does not really write songs, he writes stories that he puts to music. He reads it to you more than sings it. I believe a movie will come out and blow people away with the songs that only true fans know. Think about it, have you heard anybody speak badly of him? Band members, former band members? Have you ever heard of concert venues putting messages on their signs lamenting a performers loss? So many people who were only fans of his ideology, never having gone to a concert have reacted strongly to his death. I was lucky. I got to see him perform in 5 countries, and I have phamily, (thats how Parrotheads spell family when talking about other Parrotheads) all over the world.

Don feeling inadequate here after listening to this.
Jimmy in his lesser known or shall I say intellectual gems has the ability to grab you by the arm and give you the visuals along with a pertinent life lesson.
Thanks for this request Ryan (hope I got your name correct)
This one has me needing a moment to ponder some things.

Thanks, Don. Beautiful song. Always makes me sad, but in a good way. Hard to imagine a good life when he lost his wife and son needlessly but it just shows that time does wash clean love’s wounds unseen.
