0-60 in minutes not seconds
If a car has enough redeeming qualities, as this one does, slow acceleration becomes OK… I LIKE slow cars (I also like fast ones)!
0-60: "Eventually"
Goes up hills at like 20...traffic lining up behind it...
0 to 60 in 10 minutes
If you care about that in an off road vehicle like this you must be Armenian and desperately need an AMG. You know, to compensate.😂😂😂
I’d take that over anything with OLED screens and no buttons and switches
100%
@@TedwardDrives HAVE U DRIVEN THE INEOS GRENADIER YET?
by the time i write this comment, he has hit 60. (please give us more diesel mercs)
(this comment was written 5 minutes after posting for those in the future)
Agreed. A G270 CDI or ML270 CDI would be cool to see, although not sure if they were ever sold in the US.
Standard issue offroad car of the German Armed Forces.
I drove these things through terrain like you wouldn't believe. Even outperformed Leo 2 tanks sometimes. They're incredibly sturdy and capable.
Kam die beim Bund nicht mit Automatik? Hatte mir mein Vater zumindest so erzählt
Yesssssss! I did the maintenance when I joined German Army. The most reliable engine Mercedes ever built. Undestroyable!
In the Netherlands as well. I drove the 290GD in the military. But we also had the Landrover 110 Diesel. That one was even more capable in difficult terrain. I hope Tedward will do a POV in terrain in one of these.
I have absolutely no need for an off-roader. Hell, I don't even like camping! But I really, really want to drive that car. Looks like a lot of fun!
Day 43 of asking Tedward to drive the S60R (5 cylinders for the win❤)
Damn, my 1983 300D was faster than that XD, not that that matters of course. Those are awesome
Pretty rare when a 300D wins a race haha
The difference of 400kg.
I had a 1984 300D (wagon)
@@nirfz Mine also had a turbo, probably helped a little. It was no 240D XD
That’s the gosh-darnit model right?
And yes, I am a dad.
Tedward + 5 cylinder = eternal joy
More Volvos and Audis
@@TedwardDrives would love to see it!
A modified ”Wolf” - mainly sold to German Bundeswehr. Always with too small engines. They should have thrown in the 3 liter straight six instead.
You reallyshoud do a w123 and/or w124 with a non turbo diesel. Those are proper driving cars
This is basically the Honda Trail 125 of SUV's lol. I think I would want to put a tach in that unused middle circle and have a turbo with an overdrive but this would be a great trail adventure car.
Think you'd love a Peugeot P4, which is basically a bare bones diesel G Wagon with a 70hp Peugeot engine and 4 speed manual, and plastic doors and windows... Yeah
It's a great a very practical offraoder tho !
I have been always searching for a pov of this. Tedward your the best
On the outside it looks EXACTLY like the 2024 model 😂 They seriously haven’t changed the exterior styling on this thing for 32 YEARS???
bro that thing is a beauty. love classics. no gimmicks and weird touchscreen bullshit. its just you and the car.
Love the comforting sound of a good old Merc diesel. So reassuring.
You have no doubted checked by now, but for the record, one source I see gives a range of $17K-$145K, with a mean price of $55K. Therefore it seems, you might be a proud owner of a Mercedes 250GD at some point!
Great video on a great car. We had the 1st gen of these in the Norwegian army in my time, they replaced the Ww2 Dodge 3⁄4-ton, G-502 WC and Volvo based 4x4. Rugged, reliable car.
You're looking at $150,000+ for a proper EMC G-Wagon restoration.. Just keep that in mind when comparing to the expensive Defender restorations that are also all the rage right now.
I drove some of the Bundeswehr-G-classes, with same engine and same transmission, during my military service. To deal with the weak engine power output, when accelerating a bit faster from a stand, you need to bring up the engine rounds per minute during acceleration in first gear to approximately 4600-4900 rpm (no problem for these engines - power needs in this case higher rpm), before you shift quick to second gear and do the same in that gear. So you get much (!) better acceleration. If I remember right: some of these engines are made to be reved a bit above 5000 rpm, if wanted. It doesn't hurt an healthy OM602. But reving above 4900 rpm makes no sense, because power decreases between 4900-5100 rpm. Without indicator for rpm in the dash (which is normal for this model) you need to exercise your ears for the correct shift-timing, so that you are able to hear from sound of engine rpm when its time to shift in next gear. G-class is an solid car, except potential rust problems, these models share with other old cars from that time.
any time I rev out a diesel on video I get 10000000 comments yelling at me lol
The passenger car diesels had numerical tick marks in the speedometer to represent the shift points. I don’t see those here.
Sound of these old Mercedes diesel engines is music to my ears. Thanks for sharing!
beautiful
SOO... HOW MUCH IS IT? GUESSING $120-130K 🤔
Most of the trucks from EMC are right at $200,000. Yes, you heard that right, the same price as a brand new G63 AMG.
22 seconds 0-60.😮 i know its a true off roader.
94bhp g wagon? You know this is going to be a long day
The OG G-Wagon in its natural habitat wandering around in the woods. Love it. That is what it was made for.
Got a 240GD Wolf for sale in MA that could use some cosmetic love but mechanically solid.
Great video! You can rev her out a little bit more though, she will get going 😁
Good to know! Every time I rev out a diesel, people freak out. This one has no tach so I just took it easy
The 290 GD I was issued had been rolled 3 times in its life so it felt like it was crabbing which was especially fun on the motorway. At 110kmh it also felt like it was about to take off. You had to whisper encouraging messages to the gearbox to get it to cooperate. But man take that thing off road and it shone. Never got stuck, looking back in some places it really should have. Also never left us stranded.
That seemed unexpectedly relaxing. I drove my friends '91 Wrangler once. Lifted, beefy stage 2 clutch, shifter was like a piece of wood flopping around in an empty box which I could never reach, etc. Jumpy like a scared horse. Basically a road legal steel box that just happened to have 4 wheels. Wanted to embrace the rugged nature, but no way man. Miserable imo.
This seemed the opposite.
Should record sound of that engine from outside - old Benz, non-turbo diesels have different sound than any other. Tickin' like a clock almost.
The only trouble with using it as an off-roader must be that it’s an old, expensive car, meaning parts, especially body parts may be scarce. I have seen that off-road vehicles get banged up, sometimes pretty bad. I don’t think you’d want to wreck this!
Hey, these 4 valve per cylinder Mercedes naturally aspirated diesels can be driven as gasoline brothers: not much torque but they rev up to 5000-5500! Don't be shy.
I get the feeling that, like me, you just enjoy driving. You see the good in a raw joy of the man and machine interface. That’s why I live your channel.
Absolutely Incredible Benz 💪
Love from Singapore 🇸🇬 ❤️
Love this, I allways was a big fan of the G wagon, but not the modern overpowered poser G wagons. This is it 👇😁
I am not a G-specialist, but on the non mil ones (and this one looks like a previous mil one) the backdoor opens the other way on left hand drive ones.
The idea behind it is that the open rear door blocks the street side, not the sidewalk side.
And left hand drive cars usually drive on streets where the sidewalk is on the right side.
Mil ones i am not sure, because there it's less of an issue as those see more offroad than most private ones. And offroad you don't need easy access to the sidewalk.
And of course i am interested in a G-video. they were/are built less than 20 minutes from where i live.
This looks so engaging yet almost relaxing, with how slow it is, seems like a lovely little truck.
G-wagons are great but they were somewhat under engined for the first 20 years or so.
Honestly I would love a 2-door G-Wagon. It wouldn't be fast but it would be an awesome to go overlanding and going on trails with one.
okay, why didn't they turbo charge it when they rebuilt it?
It reminds me a bit of my old 3rd series 4Runner, which had a 5-speed manual transmission…
The sound and feel of any 5 cylinder always gets me, no matter being a petrol or diesel
This car looks so fun to drive! It brings me memories of driving my dad's old Ford Transit work van Idk why, lol.
15:56 waiting for the car to pass, then indicating left. That's how you learn it, glad seeing someone actually do it in real traffic!
Is it just me, or have you started talking with an Austrian accent?
This is the one vehicle my old 94 4Runner would beat in a drag race
This is actually my grandmothers dream car
I have driven a G with this engine in Military here in europe. Fully loaded it was a wandering dune. 😅
I fell in love with it, but sadly I'm in Australia.
There's almost a Viper or truck V10 sound to it.
That looks like a nice ride. I would love to see an overdrive gear.
Find a Mercedes T1 van or Harburger Transporter
The solid _thunk_ when you close the door on it is heavenly!
I've wanted this G for the past 25 years or so
The starting price is $180,000!
Ain’t nothin’ like the sound of a G Wagen door
These are cool but for $200,000 not so much...
Sounds like you need to trade the GX in on one of these 😁
Land rovers are not expensive compared to these they are just expensive because in the US they got restricted. In Europe they are cheaper than US ones by miles.
Here, people will put 200-300k into a defender and they still drive meh after all the money!
imao the sound system wrecks the beauty of the car
Very cool but for what EMC is charging it really should have a turbo...and a tach while they're at it.
I’ve seen others with the inline 6, a tach, and a 6 speed. Just depends on what the client wants I assume
A manual with no tach, I know they exist but damn. Haven't finished the video im just think of what granny+ low gear(transfer case) would be.
What a machine. I wish I had one for winter
'oh shit' handle confirmed.
First the FJ40 and then this... both dream vehicles. Did you prefer this one more?
I prefer this G. Slow but incredibly tight. It felt brand new
I fell asleep when you mashed the pedal. When I woke up I think you were breaking 50 mph.
Sleep is way more important than people think
What an absolute beast, love it.
A shovel in an engine bay wow!
The steering wheel is 1979
0:30 its not going far away from Drone
Probably has a lot of torque.
this costs 180 000 $
0-60 time of... eventually.
Base price $189,000
Still the best G-series.
With the winch on there, it looks like it's tongue is lolling out! its a little silly, but i love it lol
😂
A real G wagon
GD because when it goes by you go “gaaaaaadamn” lol
Love it! 🔥
Nice truck.
loved it
0-60 on a good day
$225k
Early for once lets go
Dammit. This is on my dream car list. I am so jealous.
It's for sale! Go get it
Love this motor! Successor to Piechs OM617. What a beast!
not sure if I'd call it a beast but it is a very cool car haha
@@mrxnoname93 the motor has more sound then go! So yes that’s what I mean, it is indeed slow😂
0-60? All weekend! This Merc is an off road beast and good city truck. Show up The Landys in Martha's Vineyard! This Merc is a tank and you have to take all of your effort to kill the thing.
"Ä" is not pronounced as "A". Its pronounced about the same as "e" in "end".
Ok Martin
It needs turbo
Yes 👍
Hi,
to make it clear: this runs 123 km/h, about 75mph. Not that you would drive that fast but you can!
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_(Fahrzeug)
oh for sure but that’s going to be redline at normal highway speed 😂
