Great trick. I’ve used it on baseboards and along the edge of the wall (floor to ceiling) where ceramic tile meets sheet rock. It works fantastically. For baseboards, I use painters caulk on the top of the baseboard to fill in any voids between baseboard and wall. Then I paint the top of the caulked baseboard going a little bit onto the wall. Let that dry well. Now, you are ready for Frog Tape. Frog tape the baseboard, run a small amount of clear caulking and paint just like in the video and it comes out perfectly, it really does.
I learned this trick years ago. We had a friend who painted designs on walls. We had her paint disney characters on our daughters bedroom walls. She used this trick on some of her designs. I was amazed back then. Ive personally used this trick when painting our own house. It works really good. It gives you perfect lines!

Hi Kilted Guy, Thanks for sharing.... I have to paint risers on a staircase that has just been installed with new stairs that are a dark stain. The risers should have been painted first but the installer got ahead of the painter. Now I have to do it and it is in the entrance way so there is no room for leaks. Any advice would be much appreciated.
If you are trying to make a razor straight line in the middle of heavy texture with two different colors, another trick it to paint one color, let it dry, tape the line, then paint it with the wrong color and give it a bit of time to dry before applying the second color. The bleed-through on the first coat (wrong color) will fill in the edges of the tape, so the second coat (right color) will leave a very sharp line. You don’t need expensive Edge Lock or Frogtape to use this method. It’s very similar to the clear caulk method, but if your customer is super picky they might notice the slight difference in sheen you get along the edge using the caulk method.
@@Tigerratcat he means the same color that is under the tape so when it bleeds under the tape you can't see it. After it dried up you use the color you dont want to bleed under the tape..
I also mentioned to a friend before seeing several videos, about running an edge of Vaseline right where I want to get the straight lines! She thought it was funny, but after doing several coats to get that edge straight on a curved wall, I was gonna give it a try! I didn’t but I may try it just to see if it would stop the bleeding! What do you think? Thanks, Jilli

Hi. Wouldn't you be using a brush to paint over the top lines of the tape if you were using it close to wood frames or skirting boards? Then you would roller back a tad. I am asking this because what effect would a brush have when going over the caulk rather than a smooth roller? Thanks
Normally, yes, you would cut in up to the tape, and roll close to that. I don't really see any different effect doing this, other than a brush will usually leave a different stippling, with brush marks. I try to roll over as much of the brush marks as possible so they don't show. Thanks
Good Morning, I have a question about using the Silicone when painting lines. You didn’t show how and where you put the line. I don’t know if you put it on the sticky side of tape or the non-sticky part! My walls look just like your samples! I am starting to dislike textured walls and Ceilings! Can you tell me where the silicone goes, Please!
DON'T USE SILICONE. Use clear Silconized caulking. Big difference. Paint will not stick to ANY silicone you get in the wrong spots. Put it on top of the tape where it meets the wall.
I’m so stoked to try this method!! I’ve tried just about everything I could do to make the ceiling lines straight but nothing has worked. I’m thinking this is going to be the one!!! Yay thank you for this video! I do have a question though. Since my lines are ugly & I’m trying to fix them, should I erase the lines using primer or ceiling paint so that I could have the white so I can make new lines? Idk if that makes sense lol.
If you are painting where the walls meet the ceilings, I would start by caulking the angles. Put a fairly decent bead of caulk in the angle, not large, but not a tiny tight bead, and smooth it with your wet finger. Keep wetting your finger with a clean wet cloth to get a nice smooth bead. You want to round the angle every so slightly, then it will be much easier to paint a straight line. But yes, if you got paint all over you might want to redo the ceiling paint and come down onto the wall slightly. Let it dry 24 hours then tape it with a good quality 3m blue, or the Green frog tape, and use the method in this video where you put a tight bead on the tape line using clear caulking. Wipe it nice and tight, and then repaint. Remove the tape RIGHT AWAY, before the paint dries and you should have it. Let me know how it goes, or even send pics if this helps you. Thanks, Guy
I see you pointed out that caulking was showing on your example with the caulking but you did not mention that the white caulking that you see will disappear because it is clear. I just wanted to point that out. This technique works well for homeowners but it can be used by painters as well, especially if you're just starting out. I just did an accent wall using the clear caulk frog tape technique and I ran 1 1/2" tape on the ceiling, inside corner wall and the baseboard, then I moved quickly, using clear caulk and a wet finger. Keep a damp sponge close by to wipe your finger as needed. I then proceeded to cut in the accent color with a brush, over the clear caulking and after completing the entire run I immediately pulled the tape and I got beautiful lines. Just don't let the tape and paint set up. It's best to pull it while it's fresh. With the ceiling, baseboard and wall, I ended up doing it all in one shot, total, around 40 ft. I'd recommend using the Frog tape. After you're done with that technique, mask the baseboard with blue tape, about an 1/8 inch away from your new line, then roll your wall while the cut in line is still fresh, but only if your paint has a sheen to it.
The clear is something I use very little of, and so I didn't think about the 1050QD being white, sorry. Caulking is just extra work key method is making sure edge side of tape must be pressed tight any tape works & on the other hand you can just free hand the painting its all taking time to make proper seal of tape.
Did you see that texture? You're not going to get tape to stick in all those sunken areas. There is no way. If you tried, it would take forever. The caulk idea is an amazing idea and quick. Use very little caulk and spread it thin. Most of it will be wiped away.
