Outstanding movie. If you want to see more of Diljit I would suggest Phillauri the fantasy dramedy with Anushka Sharma, an underrated little gem IMO, and Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari a comedy with Manoj Bajpayee.
The sad part is these murders never gets proper justice delivered to it. Same thing happened to Sidhu Moose Wala. I still hear conspiracies about Biggie and Tupac. Such a shame we are losing wonderful talents just like that.

Just finished the film on Netflix & headed over to the OSR channel to hear these gentleman's thoughts. Despite being a huge Imtiaz admirer, Im embarrassed to say I had somewhat low expectations of the film. It was an EXCELLENT film. Sincerely looking forward to Mr. Ali's next masterpiece. Great made movie. Always was eager for Imtiaz’s movie. Very touching. Only thing where Imtiaz fell short, though he covered it subtly, naming the Khalistani militants. It was said the Khalistan Tiger Force killed him or Babbar Khalsa group. So he just said “Force”. Also, it depicts today’s Canada/US/UK religious temple structure where they are dictating and calling the shots for separatism and Khalistani activities. Very much relevant today.
The difference is that if it were Vicky, the songs would've had to be recorded with some other singer and dubbed. Here, Diljit sang and they weren't recorded in a studio for the film, which gives it a great feel.
Imtiaz wanted someone who could sing and didn’t want to dub..which is why picked diljit and parineeti..But both did a very good job in acting department also..
For Whodunnit aspect (@8 min), I think it relates to the discussion between Maj. Colvin and Carver in The Wire. When Maj. Colvin said you call something a war and pretty soon everyone will act around like they are warriors. Even a single word about why someone has a problem with these artists gets out, anyone would call themselves a saviour and feel entitled to take their lives. And this, I think, Sivia was trying to communicate with them. So I think it will always be tough to pin the murders on some people exactly.
1980s Punjab was a scary place, militant and extr.ism was at its peak and govt crack down went in overdrive. There were many encounters and thousands of people and police personally were killed under mysterious circumstances, the arms and ammunition to these militants were transferred by Pakistan, and many prominent industrialists , politicians and army personnel died during this period whose deaths were never resolved, when the police says they don't know who killed chamkila it is truly because they can't tell because law and order was crippled in Punjab during that time and nobody knows from whose gun the deed was done. It is evident from the opening shot of the movie, when the friends of chamkila are scared to even open the door at night when they suspect militants are coming and police have to declare that they are there to instill some confidence in them.
