    Thank you for mentioning the Sheaffer Triumph nib! It's the first thing I thought of when the Monoc was announced but I haven't seen anyone acknowledge the similarities. I love those old nibs from a design standpoint & it's awesome to see a modern take on them that's so exceptionally well designed.

      Indeed! I picked up a Triumph in my earlier FP days and was thrilled with the nib design and function, the snorkel filling system (engineering) -- but not the repair/maintenance as much! I really like the unique work and passion Ian Schon puts into his work though my budget has trouble stretching so far. I have one Pocket Six that I dearly love and I've repeatedly looked at other pens of his (eg, Ultem!) but I end up getting budget friendlier but still top quality alternatives like Gravitas Big Dropper.

      I love that Shaffer model.. the Monoc does remind me of it, and the Monoc takes it to another level.

    Thanks to you for the review, and to Ian Schon for his innovation, obsessive attention to detail, and overall brilliance. Whether someone likes the idea of this nib or not, you know you are in good hands with Ian Schon every time. He's worked on this for years and it shows.

    Very cool. I'm glad to see that even with something that's considered "old-fashioned", there's still innovation going on. Thank you for sharing this with the community.

    This is so cutting edge. I love how Ian worked the ink flow situation to be so consistent, and how the nib is machined from one solid piece of titanium. It’s a design innovation, and the aesthetic is above and beyond. I ordered one at the California Pen show in Los Angeles. It will come in March. 😁😁😁Great vid. Thank you.

    Thank you for this review, I have been waiting for a review of the Monoc nib. Big congrats to Schon Dsgn for making their own nib, not many companies have their own inhouse nib, and this is a completely different nib. Exciting!

    Thank you for the review - I wholeheartedly agree. I got one of these as well, and it is a great nib. I also found it does reverse writing well if you want a finer line - I saw no issues, and it writes just as consistently for me both ways. This is an amazing product.

    Thank you for this! I agree with you on how cool it is. Also, you answered my questions perfectly. And this isn't a nib for me. That said, I enjoyed this fascinating review, and I'm still thinking about what my first Schon DSGN pen will be.

    Ian *is* awesome. His pens are beautiful and work excellently well and he's just a lovely human being to boot. These nibs are fascinating, but I would definitely prefer to try one before buying. I think I'd rather spend that money on just getting more of Ian's pens. I'll be more tempted when there are finer variations on the nib.

    I just ordered a monoc with the standard pen. I have a pocket 6 in copper already and really regret not ordering an ultem with the monoc. I just couldn't afford it in the end. The monoc pushed my budget enough already. Can't wait to get this. It shipped the next day after putting the order in.

    I’m loving the Monoc and the pen it came with. I’d like a fine line version. I also love my pocket six. Ultem Natural is my fave pen of Ian’s. Can you compare eye dropper to converter with Monoc since you have two? 🥰 Thanks for recording the great review.

    Do you think no tipping material is a problem when titanium is not a hard material that's good for longevity? I might develop a flat spot over time?

    During your "seven wildly fruit flies" writing, it looked like the line of text was drying out the further you wrote along the line. While the nib looks interesting, this would be a show-stopper for me. Can you comment on this impression?

    Which Sheaffer pen has a similar nib? I saw you pull one out of a pen holder. I adore Sheaffer pens, my first fountain prn I got at 16 yrs. of age, a Targa 1032 Tortoise Lacque. I just remembered, its the Sheaffer Triumph that you you own. What is thd best one to get? Where do you recommend I purchase such a pen from?

    Is this nib worth $400 US ($520 Cdn.) plus taxes and shipping? A rainbow that you can hardly see. I have the old Shaeffer and love the nib which I was able to acquire for under $100.00. Looks like the ink might also be called Diamine Prussian Blue! My favourite ink.

    $400??? Compared to Pilot 823, Lamy 2000, Leonardo MMZ w/14k nib etc no its way too expensive.

    • @jamespicht1128
      @jamespicht1128 Год назад +2

      Too expensive for what? I have pens across a wide range of prices. If I just wanted something that writes well, I'd use Pilot gel pens. If I just wanted a fountain pen that writes well, I'd stick with a Pilot Metropolitan for about $20. At over $500, a Leonardo MMZ (14K nib) is way too expensive. Break down a MB 149 and you're left with a few dollars worth of resin and about $50 worth of gold; the MMZ and Lamy nibs contain maybe $20-30 worth of gold.
      So what are we comparing here? The scrap value of the pens? The writing quality? The value of having something unusual and interesting? Hard to say. We're all different, with different interests and wants in fountain pens. The cost of making that Monoc nib is considerably more than the value of the titanium, just as the cost of a Leonardo involves much more than the price of its resin and the gold in its nib. That said, I'm not convinced I actually want a Monoc nib until it goes in a pen that I like more and comes in a fine or italic grind. It's too expensive because it doesn't meet my wants, not because of how it compares in price to a Lamy 2000, a pen I strongly dislike and wouldn't buy for $100, let alone $200.

  • @Forbesy1
    @Forbesy1 9 месяцев назад +3

    I guess I am failing to hear the part about this new titanium nib that makes it better in any way than our standard nibs we've been making for over 100 years. Sure it looks fancy and titanium is a cool word, but it seems like the whole marketing tactic to this company is based on hot keywords that will attract people. Seems a little scary and fishy to me especially for the price. You just keep saying it's amazing and wow and oh my gosh it's incredible, but not actually saying what's different or better about it.

    • @ichirofakename
      @ichirofakename 6 месяцев назад

      Exactly. No one on RUclips can express in terms of either feel, performance, or results, what makes this thing special. Himself told me you have to try it to understand. I'm gonna take my $400 and buy half a KoP instead.
