    In this timed urban sketch we travel to the Bridge of Sighs in Oxford and I share lots of tips and tricks for fast urban sketching, showing you what can be achieved in 10, 15 or 20 minutes. I'm using a fountain pen with Platinum Carbon Ink, which is one of the few really black, really waterproof inks you can use in a fountain pen without ruining it. The pen I am using is a very cheap Dollar 717i piston pen. I got 10 for £7.99. At 80p a pen how will it hold up (really well!). I add a splash of watercolour to bring the sketch to life and then some final details with the ink, because we all find it hard to stop!! Line and wash is a speedy way of capturing lots of information and it is fun too.
    If you are interested in seeing another timed sketch using this fountain pen but with ordinary pen ink, please look here: • Speed sketching with a...

    As well as the Dollar piston pen, I am using a Moleskin A5 sketch book. Just use whatever you have, as long as the paper can stand up to a bit of water. I used a prototype Derwent line and wash set for the colours - improvise with your colours for some added fun, and a waterbrush - they are so convenient if you are outside sketching.
    Seeing what you can sketch in 10, 15 or 20 minutes, is a great exercise. It makes you cut out anything unnecessary, it makes you decisive, it really focuses you on the essentials and proves once and for all, that you really do have time to sketch.
    A piston fountain pen has a larger ink capacity than a normal pen which makes them great for urban sketching. This cheap pen performed remarkably well, though a slightly finer nib might be a good idea.
    This film also proves how forgiving this style of sketching is. I didn't use a pencil guide and made quite a few mistakes and wobbles, but I hope you agree that they are not really noticeable in the final sketch. What do you think?
    If you enjoyed this, please like and subscribe and hit the notification bell to be emailed when I release the next film. I try to do one per week. If you want to see more urban sketching there are both simple and more detailed ones on this channel. I love this! Very brave of you to attempt a subject which is quite detailed and complex in perspective. But you did it so well. I live in Oxford and know the bridge. Might have a go myself, not plein air but from a photo and timed as you did. Thank you!

      It's surprising what you can capture in a short time! We live about 45 mins from Oxford, but I haven't been for a while

    I’ve learned that perfection is not the key. Loose drawings and wash is quite beautiful! I’m learning a lot! I checked fountain pens on Amazon and for a cheap one with a bottle of ink it’s $50.00. I’ve already spent a small fortune on supplies. But I’d sure like a fountain pen!

    I use both Carbon ink and the Derwent Line and Wash kit as well! I think they work great together. I see you have snuck some extra pans in! I should really do that as well. This set needs a punchier green as Meadow Graphitint is a little on the pale side for my tastes. Really loved this demo. That was all the time you needed to really capture the essence of the place!

    Enjoyed this! FWIW, Noodler's ink has waterproof inks. Lexington Gray is one - - it's pretty dark. They have some ratings with their MANY inks to show water resistance. Another waterproof ink is "Document Ink", and De Atramentis has good choices/colors. In the US, Goulet Pens carries it. I can't speak for Britain.

      yes, we get Noodlers and document ink! I haven’t used Noodlers but I have a couple of docent/ registrars inks and a film lined up with them in a few weeks…

    I LOVE sketching with fountain pens. They are so versatile and, frankly, just fun to use. There are soooo many options for ink types, colors, etc... that you can use. If you haven't tried it, try out the Noodler's Lexington Gray. It's relatively waterproof, fountain pen safe, and really goes good with a watercolor wash because of it's non-shiny characteristics.

      I haven’t tried that one yet. I have heard good things and the grey would not be so harsh, I reckon

    Lovely work and very useful.
    My question some time after is the following: how is the pen doing with the Carbon ink? Have you paused it for some days? Have you cleaned it?

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Год назад

      I went away to Australia for six weeks after making this film, so I emptied and flushed out all my pens. If you are not using a pen for 10 days/2 weeks, I personally would flush out any waterproof ink to be safe.

    Liz- I’ve just recently found the joy of ink and watercolor wash and you! Love your style and your tutorials are really instructive. Question: what is the purpose of trying to keep a single line or not lifting the ink pen while sketching?

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Год назад +2

      Well… it is really good training for your eyes. It makes you not jump over sections and really see the flow and connections in your subject. It is also fast. The connecting lines imply a lot of detail which just isn’t there. Then it stops you being a perfectionist and you just enjoy drawing without worrying about wrong lines….
