    Has to be one of the greatest performances ever recorded. Amazingly talented, to include Cab. Recorded back in the day when people could dress up, go out on the town, and have fun, leaving politics at home. The good old days. We've replaced class with trash.

      There's an expression that describes this well: "cultural confidence". With all the problems the performers had in their professional lives, just think - this was 1943! They were at war, and everyone had men in their lives who could be killed at any time. But they didn't mope around complaining that it was all unfair and life sucks. They still thought life was worth living and doing well, so they enjoyed being and looking their best.

    Though Cab Calloway was my grandmother’s cousin I never met him but always admired with pride all his performances.
    He was a famous bandleader, singer, musician and dancer of his era. Nicholas Brothers!!!!!!!

      My dad was an entertainment specialist and brought Cab to Cuba in the 1950's where he was still immensely popular. They remained friends and after my folks came to live in NY he was a guest at our house on a few occasions and I was lucky to meet him -- aging, but with the same personal charm he portrayed on screen and stage. God rest his soul.

    • @MikeJohnson-hp8lr
      @MikeJohnson-hp8lr 3 года назад +1

      That's what I used to think. Then I researched it further and discovered it wasn't. For one thing, you can see where the scene cuts are. That's when they stopped filming and set up the next shot. Secondly, the amount of strength and energy needed to truly do this in one take would be physically impossible for anyone to achieve. Ask any professional dancer. It has also been reported that the choreography was improvised on the spot. Another untruth. Much too intricate to be improvised. A *lot* of practice went into this, and every other routine they ever did. Still, there's no denying their talent, and they deserve every accolade they ever received. We will never see their like again.

Cab Calloway was a Icon of another generation... started his own band when he was in his 20's! traveled all over, was one of a kind always classy. The Nicholas brothers were Rock stars of their time... As young entertainers their parents only allowed them to dance in first class places, also they had their own Chauffeur!, quite a feat for Afro Americans in the 1930's!..their is a documentary on their life on youtube! another fantastic tap dancer is Eleanor Powell check her out! amazing!!

    Cab Calloway main contributor of Jazz especially Big band Jazz along with Duke Ellington....they were the gods of jazz music. Scat is the style of singing that Cab was singing which is t he early stages of "Rap." Nicolas Brother were the best Tap Dancers in the world. Because of The Jim Crow Laws were not commercial or heavy advertised. It was back then 'a white world."

  • @jpsned

    The drummer seen at the beginning is J. C. Heard. I spoke to him a few times on the telephone back in the mid-1980s when I was an announcer at a jazz radio station in Trenton, NJ. He was a really nice guy and was excited that my station was playing his records. (He was leading his own big band out of Detroit at this point.)
    I first saw this dance clip when I was taking swing dance lessons in the mid-1990s. The Nicholas Brothers aren't only incredible dancers but outstanding athletes as well. They knew how to both control their muscles and take care of them, too. Nobody does stuff like that without getting injured unless they knew proper stretching, warm-ups, etc. This dance is a marker by which all other dances need to be measured.
    Yeah, JAYY, this is what jazz is all about! Fun, surprising performances (one jazz writer called jazz "the sound of surprise.") For more fun, immerse yourself in the world of jazz from the 1920s up through the 1950s. You'll enjoy it!

    Seriously, Cab Calloway, The Nicholas Brothers, Cyd Cherisse, and Dorothy Dandridge were who influenced (and taught) Michael and Janet Jackson. Hell, even James Brown, MC Hammer, and even Maurice and Gregory Hines looked up to The Nicholas Brothers... To the point that Calloway, Cherisse, and the Nicholas Brothers all appear in Janet Jackson's video "Alright". And they were still pulling this off, in their 70s!!

    Word was that they didn't have the money for extra film so this was a ONE TAKE deal...better get it right the first time and they did. WOW!

      Not one take. Many, many takes. You can easily spot where the camera cuts are, which is when they set up the next shot. Also, ask any professional dancer, and they'll tell you a routine requiring such amazing physical strength as this would be impossible to pull off in a single take. Even knowing that, their skill is rightfully legendary.

    No joke, they were Michael and Janet Jacksons dance instructors later in life! I can totally see where Michael got the footwork and performance perfection attitude from. Goes to show there's always been legends!
