I love how Lee is just a natural, consummate interviewer - as if he trained in college or worked in public broadcasting all his life! A full hour interview expertly, casually and easily going through every detail of arguably one of the best acoustic guitars brands in the world. Another fantastic interview Lee, and congratulations on buying the first Atkin of a new series!
A lovely insightful video, chaps. I've just taken delivery of my first custom Atkin OM and can safely say it's a great guitar. The attention to detail is flawless and the tone oozes a very 'lived in' vibe. The aged finish is spooky too. A super fine job, Alister! x
Was in the band with Alister. Known him since he was 7 years old. Just sent him pictures of my Flea Bass ii!
These are great guitars. I am from germany and 65 years old, played about 60 guitars in my life, - good ones. But my latest aquisition, an Essential 0M-A from Atkin, is really my "desert island guitar".
If my house burns down, this would be the first thing (except people) I would run in and save it.
Grab these guitars before the price skyrockets. They’re making their way through the US. When they catch on here, it will be hard to keep up with demand. I’m lucky enough to have a dealer 3 hours away. My D-37 is the greatest guitar I’ve ever played and I’ve played loads of vintage Martins and boutiques. I love Atkin so much I’ve since purchased a White Rice and an EOM. The OM sounds like a dreadnought. Everyone that plays my guitar is blown away. I see a candy apple LG-47 in my future.
Absolutely love these guitars. Looking forward to coming to Andertons to try them out in the near future.
Oh man, Pete playing is just amazing and the sound of those AC's are incredible.
They are truly majestic instruments.
I cannot believe it's almost 2020 before I've ever heard of Atkin guitars. I'm sooo enamored with lutherie... I think this truly is my dream job. Maybe one day
I have the joy to play a J43. It's absolutely gorgeous! 👍👏
Geez.. I'm completely blown away !
Oh yeah just picked up my Atkins 0037 it's amazing Big thumbs up to Alistair and the guys great customer service proud to get in on the ground floor with this company.
Unrelated but I bought the charvel GG signature from you guys and you've enhanced my life by a million percent. Perfect quality.
Just a note, these videos are a part of the reason why my allegiance lies with you guys! Love your store, love your videos. Cheers guys! ♥
The Essential D and the 43 are absolutely unbelievable guitars. I tried both of them and was gutted that I couldn’t have both. I walked out with the 43. When I tried the Essential D I did so against the Martin D18 and it absolutely blew it away - as witnessed by several other people who were watching on.
Oh my god! I could literally listen to Pete all the live long day 😍
Super interview and a smashing bloke, not to mention a very skilled luthier. Met Alastair at his first or second London guitar show. Was seriously taken with his J45-equivalent model and had a fascinating conversation about scale lengths. One of my biggest regrets of my life is that I didn’t buy (couldn’t really afford/ ability couldn’t really justify!) the beautiful instrument there & then..Damn!
2nd regret is that my playing ability hasn’t really improved even after all these years, either ... Damn! Again.
So I thought an hour! I haven’t got time for that
Ended up watching the whole thing from start to finish - thoroughly enjoyed it
I heard koa and Atkins is now my number one brand. Ive played Martin and Taylor koas and they didnt have the resonance I loved from koa. I'm excited to see what you do with koa. Youre my dream acoustic brand now.
so bloody beatifull.
Alister makes truly wonderful instruments.. my retro/relic D28 never fails to amaze me- so loud! the best i ever played. he also turns them around very quickly considering just how detailed his approach is...
GrahamCoxonOfficial These are amazing guitars, I own the OM28 Custom. Fantastic!
Right on, man!
Ive just discovered Atkin Guitars, and I am absolutely blown away. Id love to find one in Canada.
\
I tried these guitars at Andertons. Wow, they are good!
LOL Lee, BRILLIANT! They sound amazing and not a cutaway to be seen. HOORAH!
I been lucky to have a 60's humming bird and a 1937 aged Martin D28 as well as a Atkin. For some reason I been playing the Atkins a bit more. Cheers fellas!
We interrupt this terrific video to say....it's really interesting. I bought a Gibson J35 online about eighteen months ago. I did it 'cos I'd heard stories of bankruptcy, always wanted a "J" so...do it. But I couldn't play at that time because I had a ganglion (a type of cyst) on my wrist and it was messing me up. This cleared up by itself about a year ago so I was able to adjust/set up my new guitar (truss rod, a few seconds) and the thing is already showing signs of f/board and fret wear so we can say.....I like playing it, it's a superb guitar, substantially less costly than what we see here. But I'm looking at this because I was originally seeking a J50 and they don't seem to be around anymore and this Atkins "thing" has become a serious maker. The "G" test - agree, tells you a lot. Very nice video.
2 days ago, I played all 4000 euro gibson, martin, guild. The guid d55 did it all better. until i met atkin j43 aged. wauw!!! brought it home.
My dad used to stand his guitar next to TV, even slightly touching it, and the sound from the TV made the tops and body vibrate and so gave that "played in" feeling a lot quicker, and he still does, nd so do I.
Tonerite make a hi tech version of this, which vibrates the strings electronically. Too expensive for what it is, but it really works. George Gruhn uses them in his shop
There is no need to do that with these Atkin guitars. The baked (torrefied) tops took care of that.
Happy to say I am the proud owner of an Atkin 00 std guitar already...lucky old me!!!
Love that you bought a guitar from the year you were born. I have the opposite problem, born in 1957 so even a basic Strat with no celebrity connection would be £30,000+!
I am back on track.... The link video lost me but maybe I should have read the text at the end more carefully..
Nice interview.
That rosewood 00037 sounds infuckingcredible
You picked the right one, Lee, the LG was the best of the bunch.
It sure would have been nice to hear Atkins thoughts more. Let him talks please.
These acoustic videos are why I’m subrcribed. This is great!
Hey, great name!
Wow, our names are very similar!
Those are great instruments.....and even better that they're UK made.
Even better, they are made 2 miles down the road from where I live. Which is at the top of the road from where I used to work, and five minutes walk from where I lived as a kid.
Shame I can't justify spending that much on a guitar otherwise I'd buy one for that reason alone.
As a life long bluegrasser and a Tony Rice follower since the early 80’s I would love to get my hands on that white rice model, that’s a beautiful guitar .
I so wanted to know how to make that cracked varnish on the Lg47. this is perfect
If Don McLean plays one then it must be a beautiful experience. They certainly look and sound fantastic.
Beautiful guitars & tones. All I need now is 2 and a half grand. Easy.
I purchased an Atkin 12 fret to body 000-37s a couple months ago and I can’t put it down...can somebody help me :)?
It’s a fabulous guitar both for flat and finger picking. I have a Taylor 814ce and Martin D28 both different but beautiful and was looking for something that was tonally in between these two. The 000 37s was perfect, one strum and I couldn’t put it down. Very well balanced piano like sound throughout the neck. Incredible!
Nice guitars.18:32, what's that chord progression from?
these sound sooo nice
This channel is going to bankrupt me.
And the guitars..
I'm listening through some quite nice gear, not a couple of desktop speakers. These guitars all have a lovely "spank" to them.
The LG is corking good, isn't it? I always feel that the "A" string says what you need to hear on a "J". And the top two. And the middle that sounds like blowing across a milk bottle......and mahogany, the way the sound all leaves the box really quickly and all at the same time....and that sort of "growl" from the bottom "E". I've got the money, what shall I do?
Which model is the small commissioned one for Amy? Is it a Nineteen maybe?
Best guitar review you've ever done !
Is there a reason you no longer stock Atkin guitars ?
I need one !!!
Do you make any models with flamed maple back and side w/Sitka top on a dread?
Yes we can do. We have some lovely Flame Maple.
Do they do 12 string models.
If you think about it, Stradivari were hand made varnish finish. Varnish is a very old instrument finish. These are really lovely instruments. Good on you'all for making very excellent working instruments. One of the best reviews ever. Well done :) Lee, ain't nothing wrong with acoustic boogie :D
The Gibson'ish ones look beautiful to me
Nice !
I love the vintage Casio digital watch, I suggest you upgrade to a calculator watch...nice guitars
The enthusiast and the maker... a great watch with no massive evidence of... the sell. Bingo.
Atkin make 'Martin' and 'Gibson' vintage guitars better than Martin and Gibson!
The Atikins guy in relation to abroadinjapan? Very similar...
56.26 Clang !!...Instant Relicing !....
A few Questions need answering ..
1 How long is the build process for each Acoustic
2 Is he the only person making them ? If not how many does he employ ?
3 how many acoustics does he make in a year ???
1. When I commissioned a custom guitar from Alister a couple of years ago, I had to wait nearly 10 months, but the actual build would have been 6-8 months.
2/3. He was making about 30/year on his own, then 50 with an assistant, but with the growing demand he now has I think 4 full-time and another 4 occasional luthiers/woodworkers. So will probably be aiming for over 150/year now.
As well as expertise, Alister has invested in machinery, wherever he can make the builds more efficient whilst maintaining the absolute quality and tone.
He is also now really concentrating on the core models rather than the over 15 different body shapes he had in the catalogue a few years back. That is simply because the sort of models in this video are so unlike what the competition are offering that he can't make them fast enough!
Hi Colin. Hope you are well. There are now ten of us making 440 acoustics this year. We will also be making 2 electrics per week. 👍
Hi did you know O ,OO, 000, are sizes of Jubile Clipps
At about 15.20, Lee, you nail it. The occasional J45 is a gem, but Gibson are just so unreliable. and always seem to have been
Exceptionally good guitars. Fantastic balance with beautiful treble. And you can’t get a better endorsement than what happened at the end.
John Greenwood do you use them in Radiohead?
Ha mate that’s Johnny Greenwood.
John Greenwood sorry, I probably wasn’t the first prat to make that joke.
You’re not a prat, but you are the 1st. Though I was ordering some stuff from a music store once and the guy went a bit reverential thinking I was he.
Ps. They do sound magnificent.
How can Lee know so little about truss rods?
My nostrils flair and turn red when I get angry.
ELVIS had a J45.
Would anybody be able to tell me which mic the Captain is using please? :) * for the guitar ofc ;)
The mics are Neumann KM184... Matched pair..
@@andertons Thank you kindly :)
@@commentingpausedtoprotectus ... about £1000 for a pair.......
The real question is, how many pairs of shoes will my wife need to buy to enable me to buy an Atkins D37A? She is beautiful, elegant, loving....... and the wife is alright too...
OK kids, first up - do we notice? No one here even mentions electro-acoustic systems, and all the dems are via mics. No cutaways either. Quite right. Even the very best under-the-saddle piezzos can't deliver sounds anything like that. Some players use a mixture of mic and piezzo but why...I couldn't tell you.
I've seen Roy Harper, Donovan, Richie Havens play to about 5,000 in open-air Hyde Park in the 60s through Shure Mic and WEM PAs without the slightest hassle. On the Woodstock footage, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, John Sebastian, Tim Hardin and others - same. Joni Mitchell used to do it. No problem. But if you want to buy a really good acoustic and sound like Donald Duck feel free. No one's stopping you.
Why is Lee making such a big deal about Indian rosewood? Indian Rosewood is the default Rosewood. Lee knows this.
Do they use V bracing ? 😂
Has Electric playing, no-glasses-wearing Danish Pete ever been seen at the same time as Acoustic playing, glasses-wearing Danish Pete?
Not if there is a phone booth nearby.
He made an error in preserving his secret identity - he always wears a sweater in both identities (usually greyish). Everyone else wears tee shirts or shirts
Hi . Has this been uploaded before ?
RUclips problems, they didn't process it, so it was only 360p.... Now it is full and glorious 1080p HD...
@@andertons thought i was going mad lol . Thanks .
I’m dreaming of a 12 fret dreadnought with slotted headstock or
a Gibson Everly brothers recreated
Atkin can do those as custom orders, no problem.
Reup?
Poo, no Brazilian rosewood?
Have a little google about Brazilian rosewood and guitars. It will all make sense then..
@@andertons, I'm fully aware about its rarity but its still available...which is why I'm ordering a Pre-War HD and am waiting 14 months for it to be completed. I can also buy sets off of the internet from $500-$2000+ per set...
Chalk & Cheese = Night & Day, in case anyone in North America was confused by that :-)
Captain bought a puppy.
Yet another Andertons' investment company ? they are branching out big time .
This is weird that I was watching their videos on RUclips and how they came about. Great British engineering
Drool
These guitars sound like a average guitar should sound
hi
Don't agree with the captain that guitars made in 1970,s were crap
In other videos he is praising guitars from the 1970s .
Any acoustic will sound better than over priced and hyped Taylor V bracing nonsense
Pete's playing is often too staccato to tell much about the tone. They seem to be very nice guitars.
To watch more playing, please visit our website.
Bloody hell, Déjà vu.
It happens....
@@andertons I know. ;-)
Compared these to Gibson and Martin .. these blow them away, they feel broken in and vintage.
It’s? ☹️
Sorry dad... :-)
Nope, without apostrophe IS correct as it's (it is) used as a possessive..
But you might want to check the spelling of Mr Atkin's first name!
Ivoroid Binding = Cheap Plastic
Taylor, Martin, and Gibson. Those are finest acoustic craftmanship for at least 50 years. The english have no originality, always copying the americans.
Dear troll, There are plenty of British guitars built in the celtic rather than US tradition - Lowden being the best known and widely exported to the US. It's because the English have no originality that we ended up producing bands like the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Sigh.
@@billyellow4849 keith richards stole tuning and licks from old southern bluesmen. Marshall amps were based on old fender bluesbreaker. Americans invented guitar and rock and roll.
@@roymontero4066 Americans invented guitar?.....errm your country hadn't even been discovered when the first guitars were being played....
The video itself compares this english acoustic copy to an legendary j45 (american) lols
@@joebryant8500 i love how the english can't admit Country, Rock and Roll, Blues, Electric Guitars, Fender, Gibson, Martin etc were born in USA. English boys just copies whatever is trending in the US lols.
£3000 for this firewood? Get a Martin or Taylor and be done with it.
Did you try one?
Handmade by the designer/luthier himself at the rate of about 6 per week. That is appealing when you are paying in the thousands for a guitar. You want that care and attention to detail. No knock against Martin or Taylor for being successful, but these seem to have all of that and a unique quality also.
I know we're your coming from but these are hand made in very small numbers. Who knows these could fetch big bucks in 10 20 years time.
I went into Andertons to by a D28 and Paul suggested I try an Atkin D37 by comparison. I honestly couldn’t give him my money fast enough. It knocked spots of the Martin D28!
I’d say if you are buying an acoustic that you might sell in the short term get a Martin. If you’re buying one to to play and keep Atkin all day long.
