    I love how Lee is just a natural, consummate interviewer - as if he trained in college or worked in public broadcasting all his life! A full hour interview expertly, casually and easily going through every detail of arguably one of the best acoustic guitars brands in the world. Another fantastic interview Lee, and congratulations on buying the first Atkin of a new series!

    A lovely insightful video, chaps. I've just taken delivery of my first custom Atkin OM and can safely say it's a great guitar. The attention to detail is flawless and the tone oozes a very 'lived in' vibe. The aged finish is spooky too. A super fine job, Alister! x

    These are great guitars. I am from germany and 65 years old, played about 60 guitars in my life, - good ones. But my latest aquisition, an Essential 0M-A from Atkin, is really my "desert island guitar".
    If my house burns down, this would be the first thing (except people) I would run in and save it.

    Grab these guitars before the price skyrockets. They’re making their way through the US. When they catch on here, it will be hard to keep up with demand. I’m lucky enough to have a dealer 3 hours away. My D-37 is the greatest guitar I’ve ever played and I’ve played loads of vintage Martins and boutiques. I love Atkin so much I’ve since purchased a White Rice and an EOM. The OM sounds like a dreadnought. Everyone that plays my guitar is blown away. I see a candy apple LG-47 in my future.

    The Essential D and the 43 are absolutely unbelievable guitars. I tried both of them and was gutted that I couldn’t have both. I walked out with the 43. When I tried the Essential D I did so against the Martin D18 and it absolutely blew it away - as witnessed by several other people who were watching on.

    Super interview and a smashing bloke, not to mention a very skilled luthier. Met Alastair at his first or second London guitar show. Was seriously taken with his J45-equivalent model and had a fascinating conversation about scale lengths. One of my biggest regrets of my life is that I didn’t buy (couldn’t really afford/ ability couldn’t really justify!) the beautiful instrument there & then..Damn!
    2nd regret is that my playing ability hasn’t really improved even after all these years, either ... Damn! Again.

    We interrupt this terrific video to say....it's really interesting. I bought a Gibson J35 online about eighteen months ago. I did it 'cos I'd heard stories of bankruptcy, always wanted a "J" so...do it. But I couldn't play at that time because I had a ganglion (a type of cyst) on my wrist and it was messing me up. This cleared up by itself about a year ago so I was able to adjust/set up my new guitar (truss rod, a few seconds) and the thing is already showing signs of f/board and fret wear so we can say.....I like playing it, it's a superb guitar, substantially less costly than what we see here. But I'm looking at this because I was originally seeking a J50 and they don't seem to be around anymore and this Atkins "thing" has become a serious maker. The "G" test - agree, tells you a lot. Very nice video.

    My dad used to stand his guitar next to TV, even slightly touching it, and the sound from the TV made the tops and body vibrate and so gave that "played in" feeling a lot quicker, and he still does, nd so do I.

    I purchased an Atkin 12 fret to body 000-37s a couple months ago and I can’t put it down...can somebody help me :)?
    It’s a fabulous guitar both for flat and finger picking. I have a Taylor 814ce and Martin D28 both different but beautiful and was looking for something that was tonally in between these two. The 000 37s was perfect, one strum and I couldn’t put it down. Very well balanced piano like sound throughout the neck. Incredible!

    The LG is corking good, isn't it? I always feel that the "A" string says what you need to hear on a "J". And the top two. And the middle that sounds like blowing across a milk bottle......and mahogany, the way the sound all leaves the box really quickly and all at the same time....and that sort of "growl" from the bottom "E". I've got the money, what shall I do?

    1 How long is the build process for each Acoustic
    2 Is he the only person making them ? If not how many does he employ ?
    3 how many acoustics does he make in a year ???

    • @billyellow4849
      @billyellow4849 5 лет назад +1

      1. When I commissioned a custom guitar from Alister a couple of years ago, I had to wait nearly 10 months, but the actual build would have been 6-8 months.
      2/3. He was making about 30/year on his own, then 50 with an assistant, but with the growing demand he now has I think 4 full-time and another 4 occasional luthiers/woodworkers. So will probably be aiming for over 150/year now.
      As well as expertise, Alister has invested in machinery, wherever he can make the builds more efficient whilst maintaining the absolute quality and tone.
      He is also now really concentrating on the core models rather than the over 15 different body shapes he had in the catalogue a few years back. That is simply because the sort of models in this video are so unlike what the competition are offering that he can't make them fast enough!

  • @geoffreyallen888
    @geoffreyallen888 4 года назад

    OK kids, first up - do we notice? No one here even mentions electro-acoustic systems, and all the dems are via mics. No cutaways either. Quite right. Even the very best under-the-saddle piezzos can't deliver sounds anything like that. Some players use a mixture of mic and piezzo but why...I couldn't tell you.
    I've seen Roy Harper, Donovan, Richie Havens play to about 5,000 in open-air Hyde Park in the 60s through Shure Mic and WEM PAs without the slightest hassle. On the Woodstock footage, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, John Sebastian, Tim Hardin and others - same. Joni Mitchell used to do it. No problem. But if you want to buy a really good acoustic and sound like Donald Duck feel free. No one's stopping you.

    Taylor, Martin, and Gibson. Those are finest acoustic craftmanship for at least 50 years. The english have no originality, always copying the americans.

      Dear troll, There are plenty of British guitars built in the celtic rather than US tradition - Lowden being the best known and widely exported to the US. It's because the English have no originality that we ended up producing bands like the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Sigh.

      Handmade by the designer/luthier himself at the rate of about 6 per week. That is appealing when you are paying in the thousands for a guitar. You want that care and attention to detail. No knock against Martin or Taylor for being successful, but these seem to have all of that and a unique quality also.

      I went into Andertons to by a D28 and Paul suggested I try an Atkin D37 by comparison. I honestly couldn’t give him my money fast enough. It knocked spots of the Martin D28!
      I’d say if you are buying an acoustic that you might sell in the short term get a Martin. If you’re buying one to to play and keep Atkin all day long.
