The ancient Assyrians were an industrious, clever, and pious people just as much as the Sumerians and Babylonians, but are only remembered for being brutal conquerors. Such a shame that they aren't more appreciated. It's good to finally see someone treating this great empire fairly.
Thank you and I agree. I'm get into more, let's say, daily life of the ancient Assyrian people soon, stay tuned and thanks again for stopping by! Oh, and I haven't forgotten about Elam either...

Chaldeans will make sure Assur will never rise. We won’t let you guys absorb the entire of Iraq for yourselves. Assyrians rocked up 2000 years after the Sumerians and Akkadians, use werent the first people khona. Claim the north of Iraq thats all good, but your political groups like the corrupt zowa are trying to steal Ur/uruk/Babylon/Kish and the whole south.
In the example of "Matt ASUR", (Village of ASUR), Assyrian's still tell this day use this word to refer to there village as "Matt" (or Matt-a), these villages are scattered in places like Iraq, Syria and Urmia (Iran) are at the heart and identity of the Assyrian people, there birth place and family origin!
A pity they only let us hit the like button once.....I'd spend the next day hitting it after each vid of yours I see.Story time: I always had figured that the Assyrians as a people had long passed away with antiquity.I walked into a shop one day that sold blinds for windows .....it was all dark inside as the blinds had been closed on the windows. I wandered a bit looking for what I needed for my new apartment and stumbled to the "office" area. There on the wall was a giant map of the Assyrian Empire. Then out of the shadows appeared this absolutely gorgeous goddess of a young lady who then asked me if she could help me and asking me to forgive her for it being so dark.....she had been very tired and had dozed off while waiting for customers. To bad I hadn't found her sleeping.....cause I would of built a temple in her honor right then and there.....she was stunningly beautiful....dark mysterious eyes and hair......damn she was a knockout. When I questioned her about the map she said her family was Assyrian and her father belonged to an Assyrian organization of some nature.Perhaps we should support them and let them sort out the Middle East.If a quarter of their women looked as she did....I don't think they'd need weapons and armies.....they'd slay any opposition with just a mere look....And yes....you bet your bippy I bought blinds.
Thanks for the kind words and stopping by, I really appreciate it! Interesting story, thanks for sharing. Yeah I know a few Assyrians living here in southern California... mostly they're originally from northwestern Iran but one family I met is from northern Iraq. I think there are many in Chicago as well. Thanks again!
@@troydavis1 LOL......Well that was like over 20 years ago.....so it's probably not there anymore.....but I believe it was in Niles IL........Chicago suburb.
Fascinating. I was particularly interested in the end bit about trade. This is very interesting to me since I am fascinated by trade before money. Good stuff. Do you know of any good books on this subject, Cy?
Go click on Cy's "Sources and Suggested Reading" link, and he has three books listed there. I can't claim to have read them. But the second one he lists, "The Might That Was Assyria", is written by the scholar H.W.F. Saggs. I have read Saggs' earlier work, "The Greatness That Was Babylon", and highly recommend it as an introduction to Babylonian history. I studied this stuff in grad school, and that was and is my favorite introductory book on Babylonian history. (Although not necessarily my professors' favorite introduction. They found it a bit dated. Although it is a research institute, so _everything_ published is dated for them. :-) They didn't have a favorite introduction so much as a favorite _set_ of books and journal articles to use as an introduction.) So I'm guessing his Assyrian book is good too. I'm an old foggie by now, but the standard scholarly work on the Assyrian Trading Period when I was in grad school was "The Old Assyrian City-State and It's Colonies" (Mesopotamia: Copenhagen Studies in Assyriology Volume 4) by Mogens Trolle Larsen (1976). 400 pages dedicated solely to this subject. It's excellent. It's also out of print, so you'd have to find it used or in a library. Something you _might_ find in a nearby library is a very large multi-volume series on ancient history put out by Cambridge: "The Cambridge Ancient History". The volume that covers the Old Assyrian trading period is Volume 1 Part 2, "Early History of the Middle East". These books are also aging by now, but still packed with more information than you would know what to do with. That one volume has a thousand pages, and is by no means the thickest. Each volume covers all of the ancient Near East including Greece during any given time period (Egypt, Babylonia, Assyria, Palestine, Syria, Anatolia, Persia (Elam), Greece, Crete, Cyprus in that volume). So you could see what was going on elsewhere in the ancient Near East at the same time. Lots of information, but the writing is dry as dirt. Good to use if you suffer from insomnia. You can buy a used paperback version for cheap on Amazon. A new hardcover copy is for... well... libraries and geeks like me.
@@Bramble451 Oh thankyou! You're a wealth of good suggestions and information. I've already checked with my library and I'll be ordering these to read.
Hi! Not specifically on that subject...
