    I’m so honoured that you saw my idea and decided to make a video 🥰 I’m also so excited that my comment inspired a new series!! When I made the comment I assumed you had read a book from each year, especially with your childhood favourite series, and thought it would be fun to pick a favourite one I didn’t expect to inspire a new series 🎉🎉

    1994: The Memory Police (Yoko Ogawa), Who will run the Frog Hospital (Lorrie Moore)
    2004: Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi)

    YES, OMG! I love the idea of this new series. I really love it! Unfortunately, I just went through Goodreads and unless you're interested in trying some older historical romance or Nora Roberts, I've got nothing for any of the years you're missing. Lol. I mean, I do, but still not books I think you'd like. But this was so fun!!

    Ahhh, I didn't know you could sort Goodreads like that! your video inspired me to check if I've read a book from every year of my life and I have (born in 1985), which was surprising. Not only that, I also have the 70s covered as well! It was so interesting to look at my Read list like that.
    My favorite from 1993 is Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, in 1995, Jose Saramago's Blindness (which might be up your alley - weird, dark, apocalyptic concept), Jonathan Coe's House of Sleep for 1997 (also weird, more like unsettling and eerie, about sleep disorders), 2004 is Cloud Atlas (which I think is a great rec for fans of Station Eleven and I haven't reread it, but I still think about it 10 years later, I just talked about it this week with someone and it's so clear in my mind!!), and in 2006 I have a lot of favorites, Elif Shafak's Bastard of Istanbul (multigenerational Turkish women sort of novel, but it's great), Jose Luis Peixoto's The Piano Cemetery (it has a weird sort of circular structure and some interesting experimental writing) and also Cormac McCarthy's The Road, postapocalyptic classic, but very very bleak.

    • @amyschmelzer6445
      @amyschmelzer6445 Год назад

      My iPad Goodreads app DOES NOT let me sort by year a book was first written. It shows publication year which is not helpful when a publisher decides to republish an old book. For example, Animal Farm it shows was published in 1996 but according to the physical copy I own, it was written in 1946.

    • @amyschmelzer6445
      @amyschmelzer6445 Год назад

      It feels a little 1984ish when Goodreads changes the publication date of a book. (George Orwell wrote both Animal Farm and 1984.)

    1997: melancholy death of an oyster boy by tim burton
    2002: bleach by tite kubo (if you would like to try some manga), coraline by neil gaiman (the movie is actually kind of better)
    2004: the truth about forever by sarah dessen (i know you dont read that much ya but i dunno, i thought id throw it in here)
    hope it helps!! im very much looking forward to this series:))

    For 1990 I second the people who said Good Omens, since you liked Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I feel like you would enjoy that as well! I also second whoever said Tehanu, though I think that book is best enjoyed if you've read at least The Tombs of Atuan (and honestly also The Farthest Shore) beforehand so not sure I would recommend it as a standalone.
    For 1993 there's Parable of the Sower, though I haven't yet read that myself. That's my birth year so it's definitely on the agenda, though!
    For 1997, maybe To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis? It's kind of historical, very time travel-y, kind of a romantic comedy. Not sure I'd confidently present it as a five star prediction for you, but a worthy read for sure!

  • @VeraFran

    I love the idea of you searching for a favorite book for every year!
    I'm on board for a more healthy version of reading until I find a 5 star, not stopping every other project until you find the 5 star but not close the video until you find it, no matter how long it takes. That way you can read a book for this project whenever you can.

    My Recommendations -
    2004: Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (It's not an all time fav of mine, but I think t could really work for you)
    2006: World War Z (This IS an all time fav of mine, way better than the movie, many POVs about the zombie apocalypse, you can read it like short stories)

    Oh my gosh for 2006 you should absolutely read The Betrayal [or Murder depending on country] of Bindy Mackenzie by Jaclyn Moriarty. It's an Australian YA epistolary mystery about a girl in high school who is super type A and is trying her best. I highly recommend reading this book physically since the formatting is so much fun.
    This series was one of my absolute favourites growing up. This is book 3 but they can be read as standalones as they each follow different students and are only loosely connected. I'm so excited because I'd forgotten these existed. I have to reread them immediately.

    Looking through my Goodreads and I read a lot of series, apparently.
    Five star reads I think you have a good chance of liking:
    1990: Good Omens, by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
    1993: The Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler
    Five star reads I'm less sure on:
    2004: Let the Right One In, by John Ajvide Lindqvist
    2006: The Thirteenth Tale, by Diane Setterfield.
    Edit: Looked again and longshot, but maybe:
    1993: Use of Weapons, by Iain Banks
    Probably too far outside your SF tastes, but it's interesting and a bit weird. Plot structure is similar to Memento's. (Technically the third book in a series, but they're all basically stand-alones)

    Dang, I guessed 28 to be safe. But WOW it's crazy how varied your reading years are! I haven't kept up with my goodreads enough to do this, but maybe it would be a cool idea to see it this way

    The shock not to see The Raven King mentioned or picked as your favourite from 2016!!!

    Okay but "books from years I've been alive" as like the ~new~ thing to take over the childhood faves itch would be fantastic. Obviously not the same at all, but a similar itch?
