i feel like parable of the sower is the obvious choice for 1993 (especially considering it is set in 2024!) but i also think stone butch blues and a suitable boy are really amazing reads from that year!
I really like not being spoiled at all! Sometimes the length itself can be a spoiler -- you could go truly unhinged and make them all like an hour long with an undetermined length of black screen at the end, lol
I, no joke, considered doing exactly this. Black screen for an indeterminate amount of time. It sounded like just my type of unhinged hahaha. But I think it would mess up my watch time / analytics too much 😅 For future episodes, I'm planning on premiering them, so at least those first viewers will not know the length! 💕
@@BooksandLala If you’re willing to experiment with your watch time analytics just once, instead of a black screen you can film yourself reading one of the books and insert the footage at the end as a “real time read with me.” Transitioning the vlog into a productivity ambiance/sprint kind of thing might hold some viewers - at least more than a black screen would 😅.
Id love a thumbnail that was more about that year than the books. Maybe it could feature one book blurred out, but I like hearing your choices in video rather than the thumbnail!
i think i prefer the way you structured this video bc if you'd told us the books on your hypothetical tbr, i may have been disappointed when you didn't get to a certain one. this way there's no disappointment!
Two books I've read that were published in 93 were The Giver and The Voice in the Wind. I read The Giver in school, understood none of it, reread it as an adult and loved it! You probably know about The Giver. A Voice in the Wind is a Christian fiction book set in Jerusalem, about an enslaved girl and the family she is enslaved by. Loved it.
i'm going to recommend Girl, Interrupted for your 1993 reads! also, i think leaving the covers off the thumbnail is best, i like the surprise of it all
Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg was written in 1993 and was one of my favourites of last year! And I like being surprised for these kinds of videos and go on the journey with you
A book I've enjoyed from 1993 is The Last Wish _(The Witcher #1)_ by Andrzej Sapkowski. The books on my TBR from 1993 are Elephantasm by Tanith Lee, Under the Eye of God _(Trackers #1)_ by David Gerrold, River God _(Ancient Egypt #1)_ by Wilbur Smith and, The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries _(Mrs. Jeffries #1)_ by Emily Brightwell.
This is a wonderful series! I got really excited and am considering doing the same this year. So thanks for that. The thumbnail you chose is really good I prefer to know the year to keep up opposed to the books themselves bc it feels like I'm on the journey with you. No spoilers or of sorts😊 This series is actually what has made me a subscriber
The Giver by Lois Lowery was published in 1993. It's a favorite book but to be fair it was my first YA dystopian experience and has a lot of extra love from that nostalgia (it may not be a 5 for you, but I would hope it's at least a 4). Also, the first Anita Blake Vampire Hunter book, Guilty Pleasure, (aptly named) by Laurel K. Hamilton. Other notables from that year are: Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, John Grisham's The Client, the first Irene Kelly mystery, Goodnight, Irene by Jan Burke, and Rudy: A True Story by James Ellison (yes, the one the movie was based on).
I like not known what is coming :-) I have always said that the Jurassic Park movie was a Disneyfied version of the book. I love the book, and The Lost World as well. Here are a few 1993 ideas: A suitable boy by Vikram Seth Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh (great movie pairing) Parable of the sower by Octavia Butler
Didn’t see a book for 1993 but when you go into 1994 if you’ve not read The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty you absolutely have to have that one on the TBR because wowza scariest book I’ve ever read.
Real talk, but The Black Crowes and INXS are two of my fave bands! Wasn't expecting the both of them to pop up this video. 😊 I've been meaning to read Jurassic Park, your review makes me wanna read it even more!! (Hope you and the fam feel better soon!) ❤
The only 1993 book I've got on my list is Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden I love the layout, how you don't reveal what books / how many books you've read!
I like when thumbnails have the books, not so much for watching the first time, but having the books visible help me to find the video with the review of books I read because of my favorite booktubers ❤
1993: The Giver, The Witcher prequel, Men at Arms. I like going into the video, not knowing what you’re going to read. But later - if I’m looking for a review of a certain book, it’s so much easier to find that video to rewatch if you can see which books are in the video, in the thumbnail.
Some 1993 books that might be interesting! - Girl, Interrupted by Susannah Kaysen - The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides - The Club Dumas by Arturo Perez-Reverte (a literary mystery that they made the Ninth Gate movie from - I'm just intrigued to know your thoughts on this one tbh as I read it recently!)
Not sure if you watched the movie yet but the beginning of the book is the first scene in the second movie "The Lost World". That was confusing when I read it.
I like the mystery of not knowing what you’re going to try! Two suggestions for 1993: Shipping News by Annie Proulx and Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year by Anne Lamott.
You could just include a clip of a list? Kind of fun not knowing how many you read. The only book I have read from 1993 is The Giver by Lois Lowry which I love- the way it stays in my mind over the years until I re-read makes it a 5 for me. Other interesting books may be Trainspotting which I haven’t read but surprisingly enjoy the movie adaption with Ewan McGregor a lot- a look into heroine culture in Scotland. Also Judy Garland biography by David Shipman came out which may be interesting. Also apparently a book called Mondo Barbie which is an anthology inspired by Barbie dolls. Like this video concept as it makes me look at past books that I probably wouldn’t be aware of
I don't have any 1993 recs, but if you haven't read them 1994 has The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa (translated speculative fiction) and Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy (really interesting memoir!)
My random suggestion for 1993 is "Tomorrow When the war began" definitely a modern classic Australian series. Definitely not your current reading preferences, but still good.
The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski was published in 1993! While yes, this is the launch of the Witcher series it is also a contained short story collection that combines Slavic mythology and darker retellings of fairytales. Lots of discussions of humanity vs monstrosity. I think with the further into adult fantasy and faery related stuff you're going, you could enjoy this one, especially since it doesn't necessitate picking up the sequels.
I am also a 1990 baby, so we're the same age! I've read Jurassic Park and liked it - I think it's probably 4 stars for me. When I read it, I immediately started a little Michael Crichton reading binge, so I've also read the sequel, Lost World, and a few more forgettable ones. He's a reliable thriller author for me when i just want some brain candy.
Like other folks have said, I’d recommend Parable of the Sower and Virgin Suicides. Honestly, I’m going to watch the vlogs any way you create the thumbnail but I will often prioritize videos based on my interest in the books in the thumbnail and if there are none, then I usually base my interest on concept or length of video, depending on how much time I have in any given watch period. That is probably not super helpful. 😂
So sorry you got COVID while on your amazing vacation. Hope you've fully recovered. Like you, I've also been working on finding books published every year that I've been alive that I give a 5 star rating. Here are some popular books published in 1993, none of which I remember reading: ✴"Guardian" by John Saul ✴"Along Came a Spider" by James Patterson ✴"Mr. Murder" by Dean Koontz ✴"Lasher" by Anne Rice ✴"Nightmares & Dreamscapes" by Stephen King ✴"The Giver" by Lois Lowry ✴"The Last Wish" by Andrzej Sapkowski (an early Witcher series book I'm trying out this month)
I think it's nice to have the books in the thumbnail, so you can watch certain videos at a certain time. I just read "notes on an execution" and than watched your video as a reward for finishing the book. And because of the thumbnail, I knew that you read this book in the video. Hope this makes sense
I am doing a similar project but just reading a book from the year I was born every year. 1993 is my birth year and I have some suggestions: The Pagemaster Trainspotting Life doesn’t frighten me by maya angelou Nightmares and dreamscapes by Stephen king
As a 1993 baby myself, The Giver by Lois Lowry was a fave as a kid!! That would be a great one! And I’m curious if Le Carre is any good, so I’d give The Night Manager a try!
Now You’re One of Us is a 1993 book by Asa Nonami. It is a translated horror/thriller from Japan. If you want more film criticism there is also The Monstrous Feminine by Barbara Creed.
As far as the video, for these the thumbnail you had was fine. I don't need to see the book, but I LOVE when the video is chapter-marked so I can more easily skip ahead to the next bit when I am or am not interested in a portion.
I think adding things from the year in the thumbnail would work better just so we can get the vibe of what the year would be so no spoilers for the books
For 1993, A Wizard Abroad by Diane Duane, although that is a middle grade book. To be honest, I’m not sure if I have any 5 star reads for the years you’re missing. Books I like, yes, 5 star? Who knows?! I do think 1997 should be an easy year for you because I remember there were quite a few good books that year and I think bell hooks published a memoir that year (or republished)
The chances of you seeing this a week later are low, but Deerskin by Robin McKinley was originally published in 1993 and that book gave me so many feels.
hope you’re feeling better 🥰 also, i really enjoy that the thumbnail doesn’t reveal what books you read, it’s a surprise😊 it’s fun to see you choose and explain why
i’ve been meaning to get to Bell Hooks! She’s a fellow queer Appalachian so i feel like i could gain a lot from her. the books i’ve read from 1993 are not very helpful 😂 there’s like a Boxcar Children Mystery, An American Girl Doll book, and then The Diary of Anne Frank and some Flannery O’Connor. and the only one on my TBR is the second Lord of the Rings book 😂
i like the surprise!!! 1995 is my birth year, you could read I Who Have Never Known Men. I have a good feeling about that one for you ... or Practical Magic 👀
You're not the only one confused by bell hooks! I'm getting my masters in english lit., and I just read some of their works for a theory class. Everyone was confused 😂
I love this so much and am thrilled/excited about this being a series! I do like being surprised by how many books it takes for someone to get a five star in these vlogs. I'm no help on a '93 book I'd recommend unfortunately, but I can't wait to see what hits for you!
Some great books published in 1993: Along Came a Spider (James Patterson), The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (Sherman Alexie) and Pigs in Heaven (Barbara Kingsolver). I love this series!
As as far as 1993 books go, I'll take this opportunity to shout out Cornel West and suggest you read his essay collection called Race Matters. Cornel is a gem!
I am more likely to click on a thumbnail if I know what’s going to be read, so I don’t like it being a surprise 😅 HOWEVER for the context of this kind of video, reading until you get a 5 stars, I like not knowing the tbr in the beginning just in case any of them don’t get read and it’s a nice surprise to see how many it takes to get there 😊
I like not knowing how many books you’re going to read until I watch, it’s like a little surprise😌
Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler was published in 1993. Anything by her is fantastic
I seconded this one! Also, the virgin suicides is a favorite of mine published in '93.
I agree about this one!
Omg I would love to see her read this (and the Virgin Suicides)!!
ohhh yes i would love to watch her talk about both of these books!!
Plus it’s set in 2024, so that’s perfect
i love the surprise of not knowing how many books you're gonna read to get to a 5 star
i feel like parable of the sower is the obvious choice for 1993 (especially considering it is set in 2024!) but i also think stone butch blues and a suitable boy are really amazing reads from that year!
Parable is the only one I have on my 1993 reading list so far!
Thanks for the recs 💕
Stone butch blues is a good second option!
I prefer NOT to know which books were read for any book vlog. I enjoy the surprise. This is a great series. ❤
I really like not being spoiled at all! Sometimes the length itself can be a spoiler -- you could go truly unhinged and make them all like an hour long with an undetermined length of black screen at the end, lol

Love this concept. You always have the most unique videos. My vote for a 1993 book would be Parable of a Sower. I think it’s right up your alley
i'm going to recommend Girl, Interrupted for your 1993 reads! also, i think leaving the covers off the thumbnail is best, i like the surprise of it all

Heeeey, I’m a March 1990 baby too! No wonder I always vibed with your channel 😂 Thanks for unwittingly making this series for me.
I was also born in 1990! Though Jurassic Park was a 5 star read for me.

Jurassic park book is amazing. You need to read the second book as well
Have you ever made a video on how you rate books? I just go on instinct when good reads asks me. What would make something a 4.5 and not a 5?
I haven't watched much of this yet but Jurassic Park is my favourite book of all time so seeing this on here has made me so happy
I like to be surprised by how many you read, but I don't feel like my enjoyment would be lessened by knowing how many you read :)
The chances of you seeing this a week later are low, but Deerskin by Robin McKinley was originally published in 1993 and that book gave me so many feels.
So fun! ❤
love this video/series!! our tastes are very different and yet you never fail to keep me captivated. feel better soon, lots of rest and tea!
I stopped watching a different video just to watch yours. ❤
same 🤩
Me too! 🎉
hope you’re feeling better 🥰 also, i really enjoy that the thumbnail doesn’t reveal what books you read, it’s a surprise😊 it’s fun to see you choose and explain why
I meant to read jurassic park wikth you buuttttt I forgot all about it and didn't order a copy, haha! excited to see your thoughts
i don't wanna know how many books it will take you - i wanna have the journey of exploring the books with you :)
i’ve been meaning to get to Bell Hooks!
Thumbnail: I would vote throwback pics of you or other media discussed and either no/blurred books or just your first read
I’m so curious what you’ll read for my birth year (1999) :3
The style of the thumbnail was the BEST-looking thumbnail I've ever seen!! It makes you click on the video so fast!
i like the surprise!!! 1995 is my birth year, you could read I Who Have Never Known Men. I have a good feeling about that one for you ... or Practical Magic 👀
Fun to see Sun Peaks in your video :)
I grew up skiing there and still go there lots, it’s one of my fave places
I want to do this starting with the year I was born 1980.
You're not the only one confused by bell hooks! I'm getting my masters in english lit., and I just read some of their works for a theory class. Everyone was confused 😂
For 1993, Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler 👀 and takes place in 2024!!
I do like NOT knowing how many books you are going to be reading in a video! Random question: what speed do you listen to audiobooks at?
I love this so much and am thrilled/excited about this being a series! I do like being surprised by how many books it takes for someone to get a five star in these vlogs. I'm no help on a '93 book I'd recommend unfortunately, but I can't wait to see what hits for you!
I very highly recommend The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love by bell hooks if you decide to pick her up again.
i think a good idea would be to show like the first book you’re planning on reading and then “???” after that, that’d be funny
Ohh, Jurasic Park was a 5 for me :D Glad you still enjoyed it ^^
Completely off topic, but where did you get that mountain sweater? I've been looking online but all I can find are questionable dupes.
I think highlighting the year in the thumbnail, rather than the books, is fun!
You’re always so creative with your reading vlogs, I love it 🥰
I like the books to be a surprise.
I am more likely to click on a thumbnail if I know what’s going to be read, so I don’t like it being a surprise 😅 HOWEVER for the context of this kind of video, reading until you get a 5 stars, I like not knowing the tbr in the beginning just in case any of them don’t get read and it’s a nice surprise to see how many it takes to get there 😊
I’m so excited about this series!! Loved watching you read these ☺️
I love not knowing how many books or which books you are reading. I see your username and click, no matter the video
would love to hear your thoughts on the virgin suicides for 1993!!
Not me being totally confused for a second when you posted your mom pregnant with you like “this is me in 1990” and I was like SHE WAS PREGNANT?! 🥴🙃
same lol
8:13 When you said Woman at Point Zero, I thought 'Hmm, wasn't that first published when I was born?' And it was😂
Fun! Loved not knowing what you read. Bait books on the thunbnail are appreciated though 😜
Jurassic Park is one of my fav books and movie ❤
Have you read The Prince of Mist by Carlos Ruiz Zafón? It came out in Spanish in 1993 and is just over 200 pages.
Your video ideas are always so much fun, I love it!
COVID has not ended, yall. Wear masks ❤
I love this series but would really enjoy not knowing what you're going to read
Yes!!! Been waiting for this!!!
