This dude geeks out over guard tosses and drum features, costumes and soloists and drill and general effect and everything in between. I think we've found someone that just loves this activity, and we love him for it.
Didn't realize you hit 100k! I stop in my tracks every single time a new DCI vid comes out and have to watch it, you always have wonderful commentary. I love how you are always willing to learn new things about this crazy activity lol.
In drum line. We absolutely match our feet to the rhythms we are playing! The term I’ve coined and heard from over the years is called “beats to feet”. Feet are usually matching with the tempo of the piece. And the music is often written around the movement. There are occasions where the music changes during the season due to the drill being too cumbersome on the actual playing! It’s a really fascinating process and the teachers and mentored who design these really trust the process on creating a fascinating product. I’d highly recommend the “A day with Blue Knights” or “A day with blue devils” by Damien Masterson. He films the rehearsal and they show how these are broken down. Not really a reaction request, but more of a suggestion if you are interested in how chunks of the show are broken down. Congrats on 100k. I’m grateful that I get to watch you learn and enjoy this crazy activity called DCI 💙
This show had “echos” of previous carolina crown shows sprinkled in. At 15:16 you hear the iconic Carolina Crown mello lick. They played this lick in both their 2012 and 2013 show. With the one in 2013 because closer to the beginning / middle, and the one in 2013 being closer to the end. If you listen to the big hit at 16:37, you might be able to notice that the runs in the brass line are identical to their 2015 ballad. (where they’re under the red fabric) There are countless other small references throughout this show that make every crown fan smile. :)
That gorgeous ballad section was Wagner's Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde -- some of the greatest yearning music ever written! Guenevere fell in love with Lancelot, and it broke Arthur's heart. That part where the whole brass comes in -- CHILLS!!
15:36 Is a vibraphone. The bars are made of metal and usually require a harder mallet that ones used on Marimbas. Vibraphones usually have a pedal near the players feet that lets them step on it, to pull down a muting bar(usually made of a soft material) that lets them mute or unmute the bars as they are struck. This kind of question/recognition is what I really enjoy aobut you and your videos. You are unafraid to question things and ask questions that not many people (who react to Drum corps) ask. Keep it up. love you vids.
I think you're starting to notice Carolina Crown's "regal" sound! They consistently when the award for best brass score. You've caught on to how crisp and clear they sound. In person, it's even more noticeable. Juxtaposed to other drum corps in person, the lay person will notice the difference in clarity, balance, and tuning. Carolina Crown sounds like a marching orchestra. They are LOUD when it's time to be loud yet control the sound to make it not harsh. They also usually play more technically challenging fast lines with crazy good precision. Carolina Crown"s hornline sound is like melted butter for your ears. Also, CONGRATS on 100k!
Well done again Charlie! Basics of Marching is 8 steps to every five yards. You also follow with the tempo of the music you are playing. Many parts of the drill are broken down into counts. It really does come down to an amalgimation of all those with an extreme amount of practice and knowing where you need to be in any given point of the show. For someone who is relatively new to this activity you have really done well picking up on the nuances and your knowledge is well above the average listener.
Awesome to see you react to a show that I marched in! Glad you liked it! (Crown 23, 24, and maybe 25 euph player) I can answer any questions you have about it as well
Charlie first of all, CONGRATS ON 100k!! Secondly yes most of the time, every movement that these individuals do are in time according to the Bpm that that individual portion of the show is set at (or they follow the Drum majors hands/baton). In the “Drill” (term for the plan that they are following for the coordinates they are marching) there is often a particular amount of steps they have to take to get to a certain position on the field. These positions are called “dots”. When a drum corps or marching band is learning and putting a show together, they will often practice marching to these dots in individual small sections, and then put it together into larger chunks of drill. Just thought I’d give a shot at attempting to explain the concept (probably pretty poorly lol). Love the channel and keep up the good work!
Carolina crown is based out of South Carolina. And I’m in North Carolina about an hour from the NC/SC boarder. I’ve seen them practice and warm up many MANY times. Their horn line is spectacular live. Them and the blue devils are my favorite corps!
I wanted to try out for Carolina crown loooonnnggg time ago. I graduated in 2009 😅. But I didn’t have the funds for it. But I was a band kid. Played French horn and marched mellophone. But to answer your question 7:41 yes you march to the beat. You keep your eyes on your drum major(s) and use your peripherals to guide where you’re going. Believe it or not, it’s not hard to march on beat once you know the tempo. But doing a show like this and how complex it is is very difficult
Charlie there is a base beat that they march to that matches the drum majors hands, this is the main beat that the entire drum corps is counting off of to coordinate their movements and music. The drummers are playing rhythms that, while extremely complex, are subdivisions or common denominators if you will, of the main beat. It's all extremely mathematical. You should see the sheet music these drumlines get. Its wild.
Charlie, they’re usually marching to the quarter note or 8th note. Say a 16 count move, would last for 4 measures of music, the rhythm played in the hands but the feet are moving to the beats of the measure…like a visual metronome! Fun activity to do! Very brain building! All the smart kids are in band! Love your channel!!!
6:35 its marching, they will be marching to the BPM, or at least a rhythm based on it(maybe marching half time or doubletime at times or something similar)
In general, marchers are marching to the beat 1-2-3-4 etc This can be edited and you can march to other rhythms/beats with the same tempo and create really cool layered effects!
another great review! and yeah, feet are always in time with the rhythms but a better term would be "quantized" cause it's like a grid that can change value but still match in certain fractions of music to feet... but usually it's just 1,2,3,4 (left right left right).. it's the crazy drum parts that go on top of it that made you ask.
What’s up Charlie 😁 I had a much better day today and i still get to cap it off with another great DCI reaction from “THE BEST REACTOR TO DCI ON RUclips”….I have seen a couple of others @Courtney Colston and @Highly Combustable Reacts who both reacted to well over 50 shows each and while i love you all, You my friend have won over the drum corp community with your reactions. as you can tell the community is extremely passionate about the activity not only when we were actively marching but it is something that lives in you forever and I think I can speak for all of us when I say how wonderful it is to see someone who two months ago knew nothing about the activity and we have been able to see how the activity has test you and intern how you interpret the activity and bring those that I’ve been involved forever a breath of fresh air. since you’ve seen more Carolina Crown shows than any other corp, I think you might find it hard to believe that in my opinion their best show ever was 2016 when they actually placed third but could’ve won they easily in the top three course were all very close that year. I’m still excited for you to see 2014 blue devils not just because it is the top screen show ever and the 99.65 but the wall of sound that they produce throughout the show is breathtaking not to mention the fact that they were the perfect general effect as well and when you see it you’ll understand why. As for great drill, the best drill ever is from The Cavaliers in the early 90s, star of Indiana 1990 through 1993, The Cavaliers any show from 2000 to 2012 and Santa Clara Vanguard from I would say 1997 through 1999… I’m sure you will see them all at some point and I can’t wait to be on this ride. Until the next one👍🙏
If you want to learn a lot about drum corps in your spare time watch some Funliner Reacts videos. It's three Blue Devils alumni (we don't hold that against them) that do a great job of breaking down all of the same shows you've watched. Not necessarily the story lines or concepts, but the technical aspects of the music and marching. I'd be willing to bet they already know who you are.
Because I have a list as long as your dining table of paid requests, and they are prioritised in order of who paid first 😂. It's on the list don't worry
When using the archive I’d recommend downloading the video beforehand to allow for easy rewinding and such. Then you can delete so it doesnt take up so much space on your computer 😂
You should really check indoor drumline (WGI). It focuses entirely on just battery and front ensemble inside a gym and are very exciting. To start I’d recommend RCC 2023 (the drumline associated with the Blue Devils), which is a very fun show.
In relation to 6:08 Feet with the Hands, Play with the Feet. That's the overarching rule across most corps. Get your feet in time! The training and practice helps you know where to place the playing in relation to your feet.... Feet with the Hands, Play with the Feet!
Epic composition, reminds me a little of a particular version of Conquest of Paradise that I've seen on youtube. . The one with a cannon ! . Unfortunately - no Internet in the house, just a small mobile screen, so the performers look like miniature ants. Arthur, Guinivere , and Sir Lancelot. "menage a trois". The film was called Camelot. - Richard Harris and..? Franco Nero? Vanessa Redgrave? It's many years since I saw it, at first release, and strangely it doesn't seem to pop up on tv? Best wishes to you and your viewers. E❤
6:20 they arent doing it by what they play, while they learn drill it gives x counts to get to the next spot and each count typically equals one step. If you want to see how they get their timing so precise look up “[whatever corps you want] tracking dci”
Love your reactions man, keep them up! There are several reactions that I feel like you’d love to do but I’d put Cadets 2005 and Cavaliers 2002 up there 😊
You need to do Carolina crown 2013! That show makes me emotional every time. You should also react to one of the judges tapes while performance video is going at the same time. He ended up getting extremely emotional to the point to where he couldn't even speak. I highly recommend that you react to that performance.
CC 👑 is always so close, I think show design sometimes is a little confusing. They fell all the way to 5th this year. They're usually a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place corps. If it wasn't for the Blue Devils, CC and the Bluecoats would have a couple for championships.
Not sure if you’d be too interested, but Star of Indiana’s 1993 might be a good show to watch. Lots of quiet moments, but also some loud impacts. One of the most controversial shows in dci
So the drum major keeps us in time with their hands by conducting. The conductor keeps us in time and we watch the cunductor and match the tempo with our feet by marching. And the music lines somewhat up with it, the tempo given to us by the drum majors(conductors) keeps us from playing the music too fast or too slow.
This dude geeks out over guard tosses and drum features, costumes and soloists and drill and general effect and everything in between.
I think we've found someone that just loves this activity, and we love him for it.
Thank you. I love you guys too ☺️
Even more amazing it someone geeking out over it that wasn't in corps or marching band at some point.
Didn't realize you hit 100k! I stop in my tracks every single time a new DCI vid comes out and have to watch it, you always have wonderful commentary. I love how you are always willing to learn new things about this crazy activity lol.
Carolina crown 2016 is a MUST! My first and still one of my favorite crown shows ever!
I agree 100% love it

the section right before the mello lick(after the double tonguing) is also pretty much identical to a big hit from crown 2010 as well
@@Zyluki and 2009, i didn’t mention it because he has yet to watch those shows
Congrats on 100k!!!
Thank you 😁😁

When we're marching, our feet are always in tine with the pulse, which doesn't always line up with our hands.
Def my favorite show from 2023. Very epic!

No, that was perfect. Thank you for taking the time Jacob 😁
Somebody get Charlie some Drill Charts!!!
Keep the DCI content coming!
Vibraphone or vibes for short, is the name of the instrument with the gold bars. Their bars are metallic instead of wood.
Love this show

Gwenyvere. Arthur's queen's name was Gwenyvere. And her lover was Lancelot.
THAT'S it. Thank you
The fact that you were able to figure out that every step is timed with the time signature of the song is crazy
