@@okman-u1697 I have a few questions, being a musician myself. Are these guys playing live? I mean they are so tight and I know over those distances they are performing, sound takes a split second to travel. Are they using ear pieces so they can hear each other? I also ask because playing while running, you're going to get bounces in the sound you produce, and trying to maintain a good embouchure seems impossible. @@utha2665yes they are playing live! And you are completely right about the sound traveling, corps are taught to listen back and catch “the wave” of sound that’s moving forward. They are also taught to play while moving as well, takes a lot of core strength.
Spot on with picking up on the show. Dantes Inferno, nine circles of hell, tortured souls, escaping hell and ascending through the clouds to heavens. Well done! Recently showed this show to my Wife for the first time and she loved it. It was great going back to it after a long time. Such a masterfully designed and performed show
Heyyo! 2015 Crown Alumni here! The show was an embodiment of the Dante’s Inferno literature, showing dante’s descent through the 9 rings (the 9 rings when down our leg on the uniform) and then inevitably his ascension to the clouds /Find God in the closer where everything brightens up (Ode To Joy was the source music for our closer). Edit: As I remember i’ll put little details people may not catch, how in the Organ Symphony after the Baritone and Trumpet soli, that’s Ode To Joy, but in minor seconds to signify the struggle dante was still facing through the rings of hell. At the end of the closer, the final chord sustain of the show , you’ll hear the Bb Flat Major chord, with the Mellophones on the G (C concert) or for my non-musician friends, that is the NINTH note in the chord, because Dante had to struggle through Nine rings to escape hell.
So stoked to always watch your content and can’t wait for more! For my drum corps people in here, I marched Boston in 2014 and 2017, and was at Crown in 2015 and 2016. -George Pinillos
DCI 2015 was so awesome, it was my first year watching the regional in Atlanta, I was running back and forth between the stadium and the lots and will never forget Kinetic Noise, Inferno, and Animal Farm as my first live show experiences of DCI. I had only seen shows online or in the theaters back when that was the popular thing. I love your reactions to these nuggets of history that us band nerds would only know about.
2015 CrownGuard alumni here, so glad you loved it! Our costumes we're really fun to tie up before every show, and though it was a very exhausting show to perform, it was a very memorable season. I did some vlogs that season and love looking back on them.
Just as a neat easter egg, the "Crown" formation is one that Carolina sneaks into nearly every show as one of their final sets. If you clip back through previous Carolina Crown shows you'll see the same shape in each closer as their personal stamp and a crowd-pleasing nod to maintaining their history. There are a few similar traditions, the most similar probably being Phantom Regiment's "Chevron" set (looks like military insignia) and/or clicking their heels together in unison.
On the right track! The horns form the nine circles of hell while the drum line forms the tenth level (the devil). As the show ends with the iconic Carolina crown formation, it also began with an upside-down crown.
Charlie, because I teach this stuff, I cannot afford the pay request stuff, lol, but anything with you and music is moving your channel in the right direction. I’m happy you’re doing this at all! Music is far too important to limit it to marching ensembles, but the fact that you’re being overwhelmed with requests….obviously means you’re doing things right! Bravo and keep the music playing brother!
Hands down one of my favorite shows, if not my favorite. Should have won gold that year. Got to see this show at Allentown show. Was absolutely amazing.
You can also hear Beethoven 9th at 10:50 and 12:17, but with a lot of dissonance Also another really good show I would recommend is The Academy 2016 “Drum Corpse Bride”
Their use of the huge fabric sheets to illustrate the sections of this….outsranding. I could definitely watch this again and probably will. the choreography of the band members also spot on
"Abandon all hope ye who enter here" is the inscription above the gates to Hell in Dante's Inferno. I loved the period when Crown wore crowns. There's a long tradition of corps sometimes placing their hats/helmets/shakos in a formation on the ground while they play part of the show, usually during the ballad. Crown had this fantastic innovation of taking their shakos off and wearing them on their arms.
Hey Charlie, in Dailymotion videos you can use the spacebar to pause and play and the left arrow key rewinds 10s and the right arrow advances 10s. You can also use 0 - 9 to jump to a percentage of the video, eg. 1 = 10%, 5 = 50%, etc.
This was a top tier show. They landed second place that year to the Blue Devils, but it was an amazing show to watch. This was my first Crown show I got to see in person and it was so loud. I’m a Crown lifer now.
Based on the Divine Comedy by Dante. Commonly known as Dante’s Inferno. One of my favorite shows ever. The music alone is just fabulous. 2008 Crown is an absolute banger if you love classical music.
This is one of those classic shows that will ALWAYS be worth watching! Precision, great design, excellence in every way! Enjoy your DCI reactions so much -- thanks!!
The carolina crown are known to make their logo a featured drill depiction at the ends of their shows. It's a fan favorite and fun to unveil at the end of the season, in this case, literally unveiling it with the golden sheet casting over the whole corp
We are all still bitter about this 2nd place…well, at least I am. Sitting live in front of that ballad closer is something I’ll never forget. Geez, this show is just it. Definitely in my top 3. And Charlie…I just discovered your channel…fellow musician here. Love your reactions and emotional responses…very genuine. Your reactions to black gospel makes my heart happy. If you want some glory days DCI, give a listen to Madison Scouts and Cadets in 1982-1985 ish. Also Star of Indiana early 90s. I also think you’d get a kick out of 27th Lancers and The Glassmen from the late 70s/early 80s; those 2 corps are no longer around, same with the Cadets, unfortunately. I love that you have found joy and appreciation in the activity. Cheers!
If it's Symphony no. 9 in C minor, Op. 67: 1: Allegro con Brio that's your favorite, i have good news for you. Carolina Crown 2008, which uses that piece, is straight technical classical, and is one of my favorite Carolina Crown shows ever, and 2008 has bangers from pretty much every top ten corps, PR, Devs, Coats, Crown, 2008 was a stellar year.
I love watching your videos! You are what the marching arts community needs 🖤 We have been overshadowed for so long to the general public and I think you putting your videos out there are giving us exposure 😊
Yeah, this show more or less got me hooked on DCI. My wife brought me to the 2015 finals, and my jaw dropped in general--but for this show specifically. It was so disappointing to see it be so entertaining, understandable, and excellent and still see it take second place. (I now understand better that the placements may determine who marched more cleanly, etc., but it usually doesn't match audience appreciation. And the placements matter much less to me these days. I love what I love!) Glad to see this show was so pleasing for you; it's absolutely moving music. Love this show!!!
You were spot on with the theme. Dante’s Inferno, Abandon all hope ye who enter here as they enter the 9 circles of hell. The ballad is while in hell and the tortured souls then the ode to joy as they exit hell and the gates of heaven til the final ascension at the end. Also fun fact, I don’t know if you go back and rewatch the shows at all afterwards but they do play ode to joy in the 1st half of the show as well but in minor and dissonance. If you go back and watch I’m sure you can pick it out now.
I get you have other subscribers to appeal to, and it's smart to not pigeonhole yourself into one type of content, so kudos. And as long as you keep reacting with such spectacular observance to DCI occasionally, I'll keep coming back. Much love!
what’s up Charlie! This is one of the biggest crowd favorite shows in DCI history. They definitely should have won the championship but came in 2nd place to the Blue Devils much to the dismay of the entire stadium. You nailed the theme of the show again. The show was called Inferno telling a story in the field based on Dante’s Inferno. you noticed many of the subtle items like the slitting of the throats with the drum sticks. The guard is in the all red uniforms with sleeves and legs missing on some portraying a sexualization and then one the show slowed down, you have the soloist playing Adagio with the red shroud over his head as if to call everyone to hell. hell was depicted by the red fabric pulled over the group generously see through to appear as if people were trying to escape but kept getting pulled out. The lighter more upbeat section depicted moving the other direction towards heaven and yes the gold and white fabric was the gates of heaven and the final girl climbing through the “clouds”. or ascending into heaven. one of my favorites. i can not wait for you to react to Star of Indiana and the 2014 Blue Devils (highest score of all time 99.65)
i see what ur doing at around 8:30, yes there are nine circles (like in hell!) and thats actually a visual idea they use a lot in this show, nine circles
my favorite crown show!!! also please do blue devils 2017, its my favorite blue devils show, its called metamorph and its about their transformation as a corp.
"is this a depiction of Hell"? Yes - Dante's Inferno - 9 Circles of Hell. Edit: I commented that right before you figured it out, but counted 10 circles.
That would have been amazing..............except TILT was in 2014. I was there in 2015, Bluecoats show was 'Kinetic Noise'. I TRULY wish I was there in 2014, TILT is one of my all time favorite shows! BTW, Crown won DCI prelims (Blue Devils were 4th), semifinals (Blue Devils climbed to 2nd) but lost finals by .575 of a point to Blue Devils. Regardless, Crown was DEFINITELY the crowd favorite show (mine as well) of 2015!
I can get you the highest available quality videos for nearly every show back to 74. lossless full hd of the blurays and better than currently posted on yt for everything before that.
To me, the most complementary show to this one is “Between Angels and Demons” by The Cadets in 2011. Also an absolute classic show that won it all in 2011
Great show, and I still think they should have won that year. It's just too bad that the video you had to react to was on Dailymotion and also did not have the audio and video synced. I just don't understand why people do that, it drives me crazy. One of the main points of drum corps is the precision, and you take that away when you don't sync up your audio and video. Anyway, loved your reaction as always!
As great as this show was I remember watching the final run with friends and all of us knowing this was not the run. We all looked at each other with a "did they just lose" face on. I wanted this show to win that year but some of the details visually just weren't there finals like they were on semis (recaps agree).
Should Have Won!!!!! Still bitter about it! Love this show. That soloist in the ballad, ❤. The fugue part in the closer, chef’s kiss. The guard and hornline was unbelievable!!
