I think it's disgusting that these celebrities feel the need to write a letter to defend a predator, based on the relationship they have with them...wow.
It's very well known that the most prolific rapist, murderers, and abusers are charming to the people around them. Such behaviours allow them to mask their criminal activities, to ensure people don't look to those that appear popular in society.
However, this shows how guileful, intelligent and cunning they are. Masterson's persona was to make people like him as a person, so they would never believe the victims if they ever came forward.
What's sad is that even after a trial in law these celebrities chose to side with the convicted rapist making their actions abhorrent. They believe their money and status would sway a judge so their "friend" will be forgiven and given less time in prison. Shame on them.
I'm glad everyone found out. Now we know who they are as people when they think no one will find out.

Indeed it can. I do not begrudge any of his coworkers that wrote those letters, I also totally agree with the sentence. I worked with a young man that was arrested for attempting to meet with a 15 year old girl. Not that it matters, but he was only 19 at the time himself. I honestly couldn’t bring myself to be anything but disappointed in him. He was such a hard working, nice young man. He had worked for our company since he was 15 and he was really like a kid brother to all of us.

There are so many cases that someone being a good person towards those they are close with to the point that if they commit a heinous act their friends and family would have a very hard time believing that. A perfect example of this is Bernie Tiede, and if you believe the movie, his victim Marjorie Nugent not being liked by the whole town kinda helped Bernie a bit.
Also heard stories that John Wayne Gacy was a pretty good father to his own children, tho that does not in any way excuse what he did to other children

@@ryanhau1073 many serial killers and rapist are respected, active community members. Though I cannot remember the names, as I watch a lot of true crime shows it is hard to remember, there was a highly decorated cop that even gave classes and did a video in self defense and safety for women because of a rapist in the area. He was the rapist. Here in Ohio, there was a serial stalker/rapist that was a firefighter. He had a list of women he was stalking. • @keng4847
      @keng4847 8 месяцев назад

@@smsquared73 That's "a lot of time for something that happened 20 years ago"??
So raping 2 women IS NOT THAT BIG A DEAL IF IT HAPPENED 20 YEARS AGO??
30 years IS NOT EXCESSIVE for raping 2 women, regardless of how long ago it was.
If you wanted more information, the case/trial was covered every day by Court TV, and other outlets.
Some of that information can probably still be found on the internet.
The way our system works is that there is supposed to be an assumption of innocence until proven
guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The onus is on the prosecution to prove it's case. But that is switched around if the defendant is convicted. Then there is an assumption of guilt, unless it can be proven otherwise: or shown that the defendant wasn't given a fair trial. The onus is on the defense lawyer. No case/evidence in that regard has yet been offered.
And there have been instances where it has been proven that a defendant was wrongly convicted.
But such things ain't THAT COMMON. And they are probably even less common when the defendant
has been convicted of 2 DIFFERENT CRIMES. And still less common when the defendant is wealthy, and thus can afford to hire top lawyers.
12 jurors were given A TON OF EVIDENCE, and found it compelling enough to convict beyond a reasonable doubt for 2 different crimes. If that isn't enough for a person to assume there is a VERY GOOD CHANCE that the defendant is guilty, then that person
probably wants to find reason to doubt the verdict; particularly considering that no argument or case has yet been made/offered as to how Masterson was wrongly convicted, that might convince people. Or perhaps that person thinks rapes that happened 20 years ago ain't that big a deal.
So let the defense team try to make a convincing case that Masterson was wrongly convicted. The onus is now on them.

    • @keng4847
      @keng4847 8 месяцев назад +4

@@smsquared73 As for Ashton and Mia, THAT IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ISSUE. One that I didn't mention. So why are you bringing it up to me?? But since you did
"That's what real friends do"???? So there are no limits on that?? You just show blind loyalty
no matter how horrendous the crime?? That is a better look on a dog that is unable to comprehend
the magnitude of the crime than it is on a human being,
Sometimes what a human being does is realize that the friendship, ISN'T THE MOST IMPORTANT
THING in the grand scheme of things. And sometimes a human being realizes that the friend they thought they knew, ain't really the person that he/she is. Btw, there are ways to support your friend behind the scenes.
But the issue with Ashton and Mila ain't really that they wrote character letters for Danny. The issue is more what they said in those letters. They depicted him as just about the nicest, most perfect person in the world. A person who was apparently fault-free. For a person that they knew HAD JUST BEEN CONVICTED OF 2 DIFFERENT RAPES. Among other things, they said about that person that he
was A GREAT ROLE MODEL. And one of the few people that they would trust with their children.
And from the moment they met him, they could sense his INNATE GOODNESS, And they made a big deal about
how Danny was always staunchly anti-drug use, even though they knew that the crimes that Danny was convicted of included drugging the women, prior to raping them, etc.
If you must write such letters, it shouldn't be that hard, or that ridiculous. Just write something
along the lines, that even though that he was convicted of those rapes 20 years ago, over the last 20 years he has become a much different and better man. That he isn't the person he was 20 years ago.
And then give examples of how he is no longer that person. And finish by asking the judge to take that
into consideration. Ashton and Mila might have taken some heat for doing that, but it probably
wouldn't have been as much heat as they got for writing the pathetically ridiculous letters that they wrote.
And then Ashton/Mila bungled their apology video. What they apologized for was GETTING
CAUGHT and thus making people angry. What they didn't do was APOLOGIZE TO THE VICTIMS
for not standing by them, even though they crowed HOW THEY ALWAYS STAND WITH VICTIMS.
And they said they weren't questioning the verdict or the victim's story. But either thy were doing
that, or they were saying that what happened to the victims wasn't that big a deal, because WHAT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT, and what really mattered, is that Danny is their friend. And this coming from a couple of people who love to present themselves as GREAT CHAMPIONS OF VICTIMS.
All in all, not a great look for people who are great champions of victims.

No one ever believed me about how mean spirited and emotionally abusive my dad was, he went out of his way to appear normal and to always come off as friendly to others, until you crossed him. It was always interesting watching how long it would take before someone saw his real colors, even just a glimpse was usually enough to draw them up. They'd act surprised or shocked despite hearing from me or my sister about how he could really be. Being raised by someone so two faced and manipulative has definitely given me serious trust issues, but in a way I'm grateful because it taught me to never assume that someone is incapable of horrible things no matter how nice they seem. Bundy also met true crime writer Ann Rule, then a police officer, when thry both worked as volunteers at a suicide or crisis hotline. Rule found Bundy very likable and a friendly and considerate co-worker. She thought he was a sincere person who did an excellent job of handling calls, speaking to callers who might have been suicidal or having some kind of crisis. Christina Ricci is absolutely right.
As a society, we tend to have this idea of either someone is fully nice or fully bad, with no possibility or room for changing either way. Im sure that all of the people who wrote Danny Masterson letters of support did so because that is who they know: Nice Danny (and this is the thing about abusers.... so often they are MASTERFUL at hiding their darkness from the people they want to.)
But not only do we see people as 100% Good or Bad, we also are terrified to admit that perhaps the person we thought we knew is actually something else completely in a different circumstance, which then can make us feel insecure about how well we know anyone.
I have had to reconcile my view of a loved one with the wider scope of their actions before, and though it was by NO MEANS easy, it was simply a truth that I had to accept.
Im sorry that the people who defended him have been shown an awful side of their friend, but they have to accept it as it is....

It's understandable to me that his friends and colleagues would want to write letters to the judge on Masterson's behalf. What I take issue with his the nature of the letters. It's one thing to say, "He did a terrible thing, but here are some reasons why he's not irredeemable and deserves a lighter sentence". It's completely different to say, "I've known him for years and I've never seen him be disrespectful to women."
He was convicted. The jury saw enough to deem him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Any "I've never seen him be disrespectful to women" talk, or talk about how good a friend he's been to you, is completely inappropriate in that context.

Christina Ricci has the right take for those that knew a different side of Danny Masterson.
A friend of mine was convicted of assaulting two young girls. I only knew the nerdy gamer side of him and was shocked by his actions. I've had to spend years trying to consolidate the two sides of someone I thought I knew so well. It's difficult.
I don't blame those who wrote character letters... and I understand the Kutcher/Kunis sentiment where they say that their letters were never intended to hurt his victims, just tell the judge about the Danny *they* knew.
Masterson's victims deserved the justice and closure they received. A bad asshole is going away for a nice, long time. His former friends/cast mates just need time to see that he was this monster along with the person they knew.

He was facing a hefty sentence, yes, but could it also be hatred of the victims for costing them millions in lost income from Netflix dropping their shows that motivated such an enthusiastic defence? That's a theory and it's ugly self interest if true. But that is the thing about love it blinds you to subtle signs of their true nature. I have always said “he who is without sin cast the first stone” and try to live my life by not judging others but in instances like this you have to put love aside and think rationally. I don’t think any of the actors that support Masterson are doing that; they were guided by their “love” of the person they knew. @@pamelac.5600 ....guess you aren't aware of the amount of celebs who have accidentally killed individuals. Also manslaughter isn't the same as murder (a good lawyer can get you that) usually like 6 years. And even for first degree murder, it's 25 years as a minimum for that possibility of parole to take in affect and not 30 years.
Pretty rare for the courts to throw the book at a celeb.

....that's a really unique thing to immediately realize upon waking up after having lost time.

As bad as it sounds “what goes around comes around”. That’s what he now faces. I am personally glad to see a sentence that is fitting. As a person of sexual abuse your life is usually forever changed. Now his will be as well. We get life sentences and he has one now.

They supported their friend. They didn't know who he really was. No one advertises such things: they're blameless.

With his conviction, now I'm wondering about Lisa Robin Kelly, who played Eric's older sister on That 70s Show.
Was she assulted, pushing her into drugs?

I do believe that people like Danny attempt to avoid harsh consequences for their behavior. No doubt he's keen on protecting his own reputation.
