Eric Sr. came to the US from Jamaica with my grandparents. They remained friends throughout their lives. The Dolphys would stay at my grandparents house when they came to NY. We knew Sadie very well too, but I'm not sure if she and Eric Sr. met in the US or Jamaica. Eric Jr. and I had a symbiotic relationship. I was 4 1/2 when he died, but he loved that I wanted to be an artist, and he called me almost weekly until he made his last trip to Europe. He was engaged to my Aunt Joyce, and they were supposed to get married in Europe. Eric had bequeathed his piano to me (he composed on it), but after Eric died, Sadie asked if she could have it and put it in Eric's studio in L.A. My parents said yes, and I guess that's where it ended up.

I have to be honest - Out to Lunch is a masterpiece, but... listening the way he played in those months with Mingus I think it could even had been better - what could it have been if THAT group became a true performing and continuosuly working one? what if this man would had not just lived longer but even in his short life with the proper recognition he deserved?

Truly a gift from God. The good ones simply don't last long on this planet. Sometimes I wonder if the lord takes his special ones home early bc we don't appreciate while there among the livings. A young man with so much talent. He has to struggle bc Evil sees his greatness but refuses to support his abilities. Eric Dolphy was simply brilliant. I introduce Jazz to my son and he introduce Eric Dolphy to me. My son plays all the wind instruments and his favorite is the alto-sax. I have an Eric Dolphy tee-shirt that I got from my son on Xmas a couple years ago. I love wearing it from time to time. Especial when close friends would ask me, "who's that guy you're wearing". I would proudly say, "Eric Dolphy". Then I get right into it. His life story... How I wished America would really embrace our Jazz musician heritage and make this a main stream EDUCATION in every single classroom across this land. This is an American history! ps.. We are all God's children. No fear... Just Love for all mankind...

I'm still listening. This video started with alto sax, virtuoso performance. I concentrated on his flute and bass clarinet(hands down the best). Now I'm gonna go check out that sax work.

I know that concert very well, but the opening of ths video just in the middle of Eric's solo in double time... I didn't expect this and it's something that actually blew my mind away... his music has this quality of maintaining its surprising quality even when you know it by heart...

i love the outfit dolphy is wearing at 6:45. he looks like the rock star he was considered 25 or now almost 60 years after his death. wonderful parents for certain who should have gotten a chance to see him play major festivals at the end of the 60's and spend money on them. thanks for the video.

For me there were three modern altos. Bird. Lee Konitz. Eric. And of course Eric was a multi-instrumentalist. Absolutely love the work of all three.

Where and when was the Mingus group recorded?
His mom had a good sense of humor.
    But so did Ornette’s playing.

1964. That group went to Paris that year but also toured US college and arts centres.
