  • Ergonomics are always important for people who sit at a computer all day. The current generation of VR headsets are bulky and heavy. This makes ergonomics even more important. As a software developer, I use Immersed to work in VR all day, every day. In this video, I showcase my current office set up and the things I've done to make working in VR comfortable. Hopefully this gives you some ideas on how to improve your own set up.

The most important items are to get an after-market headstrap and a facial interface with vents for cooling. Also, if you wear glasses, definitely get prescription inserts. Those are critical. All the rest of the stuff that I do are just fun customizations that I did to trick out my set up. Thanks, Gary!! I love this stuff too!! So, a lot of us in the Immersed Community are very anxious and hopeful for the release of Meta's next generation headset. In the past, this has been rumored as "Quest 3" or "Quest Pro". However, back in October of 2021 during "Connect", Meta announced that they are calling this next headset "Project Cambria". It should be a professional grade headset with features such as: "pancake" optics (thinner lenses), higher resolution displays (possibly micro-OLED), high-res color passthrough cameras, facial tracking for more expressive avatars, lighter form factor, etc. It will carry a much heftier price tag. Here is the video of "Connect": ruclips.net/video/Uvufun6xer8/видео.html In the video, they talk about it around 55 minutes in. I keep checking the Reality Labs page, but they don't really share much info about it: facebook.com/RealityLabs At Connect, they did say that it would be released in 2022, but there are rumors that they may not hit this timeline. Whether it's late this year or early next year, I can't wait!!

      You got it! A straw is the easiest way to go. That used to be awkward, but now, with the Immersed passthrough feature, you can see your straw! Here's a video I did that demonstrates the passthrough feature if you haven't seen it: ruclips.net/video/kLQxDpMEAzo/видео.html Also... if I'm working late and want a beer... a long-neck bottle works perfectly! 😉

  • @GAtroybob
    @GAtroybob Год назад +1

    I’m just starting out with Immersed and enjoying your videos. I’m curious whether there is a convenient way to rotate the VR view itself (for instance, to bring your left screen to center) rather than having to rotate your body or chair to center the left screen (or maybe to face the left screen and then lock it in as the center so that you are still facing it when you face forward).

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  Год назад

      Immersed was working on a way to swivel the screens around based on head movement. So, for example, if you moved your head to the left and held it in place, then the screens would swing around so the left screen would swing to the center. However, it made it really hard to look at any given screens left or right side without inadvertently moving the screens around. So they bailed on that feature (or at least put it on hold). So, for now, one thing comes to mind... it's a little kludgy, but I think it gives you what you're looking for... sort of. If you're using hand tracking, you can pinch your thumb and index finger on your right hand to open up the Oculus menu shortcuts. The icon on the top/center (arrows in a + arrangement) is the reorient icon. So select it, then swivel your head to look at the opposite screen that you want centered. After the screens reorient, when you can look straight ahead, you'll be looking at the side screen. So, for example, to "move" the right screen to center, reorient while looking left. Like I said... kludgy, but that might accomplish what you're looking for. The other alternative is free locomotion. It's currently in beta. With free locomotion, you can use the thumbstick on the controller to reorient your view... basically turn in your chair. Hopefully this helps!

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  2 года назад +1

      Hi Arnold -- Yes, I love making the screens truly GIANT... like, the size of an IMAX movie theater screen! Not only that, but I also make my font sizes smaller. In this way, you can see more text at a glance in VR than you can comfortably IRL. There are many techniques you can use to improve the resolution/sharpness/readability/blurriness in Immersed. Even at its best, you won't be able to match the resolution of a 4K monitor IRL. However, you DO get enough resolution to work and read easily in VR. Also, as headset technology improves (i.e. Cambria), this will only get better. Current rumors say the Cambria is scheduled to come out later this year... but that's just speculation at this point. As a full-time user of Immersed using a Quest 2, I can tell you from experience that it is completely usable/workable. And fun!! 😃

    This is cool, you've put a lot of effort into making this work, but I'm trying to understand what the benefit of working in VR is? There's so many downsides, clarity and FOV being the biggest

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  2 года назад +2

      There are absolutely trade-off's for sure. And, yes... I've invested a lot of time and money into optimizing my setup. However, the payoff is absolutely worth it! When I sit down (or stand up) to work, I have 5 truly massive screens that I can fill up with code, databases, communication tools, reference materials, music apps, etc. Having everything available at a glance brings a new level of productivity that I had never experienced before. Also, by immersing yourself in a virtual environment, you remove all visual noise and distractions. You can crank up the tunes to eliminate audio distractions as well. In this way, it is super easy to get into a state of hyper-focus. I find myself slipping into "the zone" way faster in VR than I ever did IRL. You would also be surprised as to how effective it is to choose a virtual environment based on your mood or the type of work you're doing. Maybe it's calming and efficient to work on the beach, maybe it is super productive to go into a dark underground cavern, maybe it is exciting to work from an orbiting space station, you get the idea. Collaboration and co-working is also incredibly natural in VR. I can hop over to the New York style public Cafe and work and chat with people from all over the world in a relaxed setting where spontaneous conversations can crop up very easily. There is also a rich community of people who do productive work in VR everyday. It's fun to connect with them and share ideas. What works... what doesn't work... that sort of thing. It's also just fun and super flippin' cool! 😁 It has brought a level of fun and excitement to my work that I never had before. It's the same work, but it's much more fun now. There's a lot of value in that!

    Thanks for this, exactly what I was looking for. I am also a developer. Can you share how comfortable it is to see the code on the screen? Do you find yourself having to resize the font to be really large or are the default font sizes legible

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  2 года назад +5

      Hi there! The one thing to know about working in VR is that the resolution is not as crisp as a 4k monitor IRL. This often frustrates or disappoints people. It is a physical limitation of the hardware that will get better as newer headsets hit the market. HOWEVER... you are not limited by screen size in VR. So, in Immersed, you can make truly GIANT screens... like the size of IMAX movie theater screens. So, what I do when coding in Immersed, is I make my screen giant, then crank up the resolution, thereby giving me as many pixels as my machine will allow. I'm running a Windows Surface Laptop 3. At max resolution, I'm pushing 2496 x 1664. Finally, I actually reduce the font size in my IDE. Since the screen is so huge, I can easily see/read the fonts - even when they're small. Since the font size is so small (usually about 9px), you can get a TON of code on a screen all at once. The net effect is you can see a LOT more characters at once when compared to IRL. It takes some experimenting to get the right size screen & font size, but in relatively short order, you can have a ton of code at a glance. It's a beautiful thing!! 😍

      @@WorkInVR, One of the things not many people talk about is that the ability to focus in VR, especially with the lower FOV, is improved quite a bit (achieving a state of flow is associated with narrowed field of vision or tunnel vision)

    Thank you so much for this video. I had looked for alternatives for my new remote working where i might have to be mobile as well and not having any extra screens, as in, wether i spend money on screens or Oculus seems about the same price. My only two issues were wether Immersed could be made to function in OK form 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and that the Oculus Quest 2 can handle my i5 Dell Latitude Laptop with 8 gigs of RAM, i5-7300 CPU at 2,6 GHz and laptops own Intel(R) HD Graphics 620. (my work is just text and some coding) It can handle three physical screens at work just fine, but does the Oculus CPU handle some of the processing or what?

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  2 года назад +1

      Hi @ADEzor - I'm glad the video was helpful for you! Immersed will affect the performance of your machine a little... but not much. On powerful machines, you won't notice it at all. For example, I'm running a Windows Surface Laptop 3 and I have never noticed a performance hit... even when running 5 screens. However, some people on the Immersed Discord have reported some small performance issues. The majority of the performance issues come from your machine running the screens themselves. In other words... it's easier for a machine to push a single screen than it is to push three screens (the main screen and two external monitors). Generally speaking, if your machine can push three screens in the real world, it will be fine pushing those screens in Immersed... it's essentially the same amount of processing for the computer. The additional processing (and performance hit) comes from the fact that the Immersed agent has to stream the screen data from your machine to your headset. The more screens you're running, the more data that has to be streamed. Often, WiFi issues can come into play here. But there are solutions for that as well (WiFi Direct, for example). I can't tell you exactly how many screens you can push from your specific computer without performance/lag issues... for that, you'll just have to try it. I would suggest this... purchase an Oculus Quest 2 headset from Amazon (because of their return policy). Then, try Immersed. Immersed will give you a free trial period so you can try it. If you find that your machine can't handle it, you can return your headset thanks to Amazon's great return policy. One thing is for sure... the more screens you have, the harder your computer will have to work to process them... that's true inside and outside of Immersed. Most people can push at least 3 screens without any trouble at all. Let me know how it goes! And don't forget to check out the Immersed Discord... there is TONS of info out there and people willing to help you. Good Luck!
