that's exactly what I got from the miniseries you didn't focus on the explosion you focus on the humans dealing with the aftermath event. And we will always remember them.
This mini series deserves a special place in history. Much like From the Earth to the Moon and Band of Brothers, Chernobyl takes history and vividly punches you in the gut with very little respite from the suspense and the intrigue of the situation portrayed. It's one of the very best pieces of art created for television. Ever.
Band of Brothers was notoriously over-dramatised and the characters were written falsely. But BoB and The Pacific were fantastic pieces of entertainment.

But GOT is majority fictional where Chernobyl is based on an actual event. I was a teen when the Chernobyl disaster occurred and I have followed it since then.
"We owe them" We all do. These people are heros. And the series showed that. My favourite scene was the bench in episode 5. 2 humble men, responsible for saving millions of lives, at he cost of their own.
I love his character in this. The dynamic between him and Jared is brilliant. How he is unsure of this scientist and they end up both becoming close until the end. The final scene outside in Episode 5 was amazing and sad. But I just died laughing at the look Skellan gave Emilys character as he sat down, as she looked at him. That look he gave her cracked me up. His humour is hidden and well timed.
jigglybean one of the more memorable scenes for me was when they first get to the reactor and Skarsgard asks, why did I see graphite on the roof and the two suits pooped themselves
Capital Cities in whole Europa should have monuments dedicated to memory and honor of heroic Soviet people who knowingly sacrificed themselves to save us.
Note to myself: do not comment anything ever again. Or, comment only about tv shows, actors, who will win Emmy.....majority of population care about that - not about actual real people who save their unworthy shallow soles.
🤚🏼Hands up if you’ve watched it more than once..? 🙋🏼♀️ My favourite Episode 5 (the Chernobyl explosion investigation, Court scene) Kudos, this was a Masterpiece
An absolute stunning piece of work from all involved, but I have a particular love for Jared. Just an amazing representation of a man who still, in my opinion, is not credited enough for all he did for us.
Possibly my favorite part of the series was watching the teamwork and eventual friendship between Legasov and Scherbina. I realize that it probably never happened in real life, but it was effective cinema. With that in mind, I looked forward to hearing the actors discuss the experience, and it did not disappoint.
I hated Dyatlov until I read up his personal story; he was in a minor radiation accident earlier in his life and his son died of leukimia; I think he was just frustrated and bitter and didn't care any more
That’s sad, but did he really need to bring everyone else down with him when making his decisions and poisoning every ounce of soil with in 100’s of kilometres
It is good that the horror of this 1986 disaster is being taught to a a generation of people who were not even born then. It must have been incredibly difficult to get accurate information considering the secrecy of the then USSR and possibly Russia even today.
4:54 "What I want them to take away more than anything is that: if you lie; if you're a part of a system of lying; if you're someone who agrees with lies that are given to you by your government, by your leaders, by your churches, by your friends, by facebook - there is a cost attached to this. The truth is always there."
If anyone is like me and simply can’t get enough of this series, there’s an excellent podcast that goes along with it hosted by Peter Segal of NPR and the creator/director of the show. It has an episode for every episode of the series.
Johan Renck: "I started reading everything I could come over" - that's Swinglish (Swedish and English mixed). In Swedish we say "Allt jag kunde komma över" (literally "All I could come over"), meaning "everything I could find". Fun to hear such an accomplished person talking Swinglish. But I understand he's nervous, I would be too.
HBO's strongest entry this year wasn't game of thrones...not even close. It was a five part miniseries detailing one of the most tragic disasters in human history. Chernobyl deserves to SWEEP the emmy's in every category, pure brilliance that restored my faith in TV being a creative medium and we can get high quality entertainment on the small screen.
Laylla's Locker if you search Chernobyl podcast on RUclips theres a podcast for each episode where Craig goes into detail about the production etc., it’s fascinating!
I remember the cloud floating over my young horizon, the cause was a vague horror, this series brought the horror into a sharp, entirely believable focus. Most impressive for me was the handling of the explosion, an absolute monster of a thing that was in some splendid way both understated and deeply threatening. Bravo!
What an amazing series that touched my heart like rarely other ever did. I am in awe of all the “ordinary” hero’s that saved us all! I don’t know if we ever gonna save ourselves...
I have been mesmerized by the Chernobyl incident for most of my life. I was 8 when it happened and I vaguely remember something about an accident. Being an American, the Challenger disaster was still fresh on out minds at that time. It wasn't until a few years later (upon learning about the Browns Ferry incident) that I really became interested in nuclear energy and what incidents had occurred. I have researched almost everything I could about Chernobyl. I know most of the technical details about it from reading everything I could find published about it. Some details and testimony conflict what we generally accept as fact (and what is presented in this series.) We will really never truly know exactly what happened in that control room on that fateful April morning. Details vary from each person present. This series has added an element that I recognized but never really acknowledged..the true human factor and sacrifice. I really didn't learn any technical facts from the series, but I did learn about the Soviet people and the human sacrifice given partly in vain to serve what was believed to be, and sometimes was, the greater good.
I was 13 when the Chernobyl incident happened in April ‘86, and like you I have always been fascinated with the details. I was also fascinated with the Challenger Disaster, which happened around the same time frame as Chernobyl (Jan ‘86). Unlike Skarsgard and Harris, I revel in the science. I hope HBO does a miniseries about the Challenger Disaster (starring Skarsgard and Harris, of course).
HBO is laughing it’s ass off at how much money they have made and will make from Game of Thrones. But this series couldn’t come at a better time. Gripping five hours of cinematography and history.
I am grateful to finally see someone prepare and present this story that I personally was involved with when it happened. I appreciate your efforts to represent this very very well. The true hero's are looking down from heaven upon you and sharing your heart...they all did what had to be done...for us all.
First saw Stellan Skarsgard in Pirates of the Carribbean of all things, but since then I've loved him in everything I've seen him in (yes, even Mama Mia!). And Jared Harris I've not seen as much, but this series made me a fan. Plus Richard Harris was his dad so yeah. These guys are awesome. EDIT: Wait, wait, I take that first part back. ACTUALLY first saw Stellan Skarsgard in Deep Blue Sea as a kid when I was going through my animal attack movie phase. WTF.

But GOT is majority fictional where Chernobyl is based on an actual event. I was a teen when the Chernobyl disaster occurred and I have followed it since then.
I hope you don't mean the entire seasons of GOT by that because the first 5 just...incredible. Things went downhill soon after.
Liquidators were not just Ukranians. They were all nationalities of the USSR
Belarusian American Thank you! Somebody finally said it.
A silly mistake. I think he knows it but he had to rush to summarize the show.
If you watched it you had to see that they showed and mentioned people being from other parts of USSR
Yes, they recruited forcefully around 1500 men from my country Republic of Moldova
@@kinai01 To be fair if the wind were blowing the other way it could be Moldova contaminated, not my Belarus.
Outstanding miniseries, sobering and real in it's presentation...not for someone seeking light viewing!
This show is incredible, flawless, period.
"We owe them"
We all do. These people are heros. And the series showed that. My favourite scene was the bench in episode 5. 2 humble men, responsible for saving millions of lives, at he cost of their own.
Skellan Skarsgard stole that entire series. He is AWESOME! Check him out in 'King Arthur.' He stole that movie too in a supporting role.
stellar skateboard
I love his character in this. The dynamic between him and Jared is brilliant. How he is unsure of this scientist and they end up both becoming close until the end. The final scene outside in Episode 5 was amazing and sad. But I just died laughing at the look Skellan gave Emilys character as he sat down, as she looked at him. That look he gave her cracked me up. His humour is hidden and well timed.
jigglybean one of the more memorable scenes for me was when they first get to the reactor and Skarsgard asks, why did I see graphite on the roof and the two suits pooped themselves
@@welcome2mytruth I think Stellan and Emily Watson deserves a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
I rate this 3.6 out of 15000. Not great but not terrible
Capital Cities in whole Europa should have monuments dedicated to memory and honor of heroic Soviet people who knowingly sacrificed themselves to save us.
Agreed.
Agreed.
Note to myself: do not comment anything ever again. Or, comment only about tv shows, actors, who will win Emmy.....majority of population care about that - not about actual real people who save their unworthy shallow soles.
They were forced to go. They were not given a choice. Sad.😔
🤚🏼Hands up if you’ve watched it more than once..? 🙋🏼♀️
My favourite Episode 5 (the Chernobyl explosion investigation, Court scene)
Kudos, this was a Masterpiece
This two gentleman made me cry , smile , have all kind of feelings .
Awesome .
I just love how the whole premise and the moral of this show is presented to you in the opening line.
“What are the cost of lies?”
Amazing.
This series was just Perfect.Respect to everyone behind this series amazing job
From the creative mind behind Scary Movie 3, 4, and The Hangover Parts 2 and 3. Dude turned it around.
9:29 "- How much of this is true?
-Everything."
You done very great thing...Just a word can describe it : Masterpiece!!!*
" Comrade, actor. You're done"
Great acting deserves many Emmys it does show the Russian people in a positive light nice to see
I hated Dyatlov until I read up his personal story; he was in a minor radiation accident earlier in his life and his son died of leukimia; I think he was just frustrated and bitter and didn't care any more
In fact Dyatlov wasn't the main and only reason of the catastrophe since Fomin, Bryukhanov, and the whole system of the Soviet Union were involved.
That’s sad, but did he really need to bring everyone else down with him when making his decisions and poisoning every ounce of soil with in 100’s of kilometres
Great to see this after watching Chernobyl.
Love this series! I’m hooked. Have watched at least 6 times. Have been reading and watching everything I can! Please more good tv series!
16:25 “At first I’m very sceptical about this guy” “𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦” “yeah 𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦” “I’m like Trump and all those politicians” GOLDEN
It is good that the horror of this 1986 disaster is being taught to a a generation of people who were not even born then. It must have been incredibly difficult to get accurate information considering the secrecy of the then USSR and possibly Russia even today.
Watch Jared Harris in the Expanse, all his scenes are breathtaking. I hope he will be coming back for future seasons.
Jared and Stellen are so great (as always) in this amazingly informative mini series.
P.S i can really see Alexander in his Father.
Legasov was the character that impacted me the most .
4:54 "What I want them to take away more than anything is that: if you lie; if you're a part of a system of lying; if you're someone who agrees with lies that are given to you by your government, by your leaders, by your churches, by your friends, by facebook - there is a cost attached to this. The truth is always there."
Daenerys in Kings Landing : *DRACARYS!!!!*
Dyatlov : *Hold my butter and caviar sandwich.*
"Swenglish", but yes. Agreed.
Thank you for doing the show! the world needed it!!!loved every second of it!!!from hungary
Very good mini series, one of the best I've seen.
Agreed.
Incredible mini-series! The best not only in 2019, but may be for all times. Thank you.
Craig, Make another series or I’ll have one of these soldiers throw you out of a helicopter!
Now after listening to Craig Manzin I understand why the series is so brilliant!
Bravo!
One of the greatest tv show ever..😍❤❤
Love from BANGLADESH 🇧🇩
Excellent story telling series, very well developed and written. Congratulations!!! All cast and crew phenomenal! Loved it.
What an amazing series that touched my heart like rarely other ever did. I am in awe of all the “ordinary” hero’s that saved us all! I don’t know if we ever gonna save ourselves...
Stellen looks like a man that has just woken up with a really heavy hangover.
@Bonnie Bagley I wonder if Stellan Skarsgard knows Dolph Lundgren seeing that both of them are from Sweden.🤔
WTF.
1:55 and that is the key, on my opinion, of the success of HBO Chernobyl, it was chaos, you don't need to put more chaos on the story...
"Let him finish" could not quit watching
This show was so well done. The actors were fantastic . I’ve seen it about 5 times already. I wanted to go to Chernobyl before but now it’s definitely on the list.
I finally have the face behind the best podcast Chernobyl 😃😃😃😃😃
What an amazing series. I'm fascinated with Chernobyl. HBO did a hell of a job with this one.
this miniseries is a must watch for all adults in this world.
It happened 33 years ago. I watched it yesterday. I'm still feeling disturbed today
6:17 Stakka Bo?! Stakka Bo has directed THIS?!!! * checking wikipedia * IT IS HIM! he used his real name so i didn't recognize it. Wow!!!
Valkyrie77 here we go again....
Here we go-go-go with disastrous radiation.
Stakka Bo, I did not see that coming! WTF
