Sometimes I still wonder how the voice actor for Luke/Asch felt when he had to argue with himself in the studio to record every scene with these two. Lol
To this day, I still think this is one of the most emotional 1v1s in the entire series. Ludger vs Julius is obviously pretty damn good, but the meaning (of birth) behind this particular battle is always gonna make it my favorite overall. Having your entire existence basically nullified by another version of you seems like such a frustrating and shitty thing, and at this point in the story there was no turning back from any of this. Asch was fed up with the whole situation and needed to prove himself and Luke had to do the exact same thing to prove his existence was worthwhile. Such a fucking great scene.
"Your fight is with me, Asch--no, Luke fon Fabre! Prepare to die." Something about that proclamation seems so powerful, somehow. He spends so much of the game lamenting the loss of his former life as Luke, claiming he's just a shadow of what he was. And yet, the truth of his identity and feelings shows itself through his words and actions all the while. Perhaps in his last moments, he comes to realise and accept that he, too, is Luke. It's a relatable struggle...
I can understand why Asch is angry at Luke here. Luke represents the life Asch should have had, and he can't stand the one who stole his life to degrade himself like that. Asch deep down wants Luke to stand proudly. That way, he can in some way see what life could have been for himself. When Luke talks down about himself, it makes Asch feel like his life was stolen by someone unworthy. This causes Asch to feel that everything that was done to him was pointless. I also think it's extra sad that they both don't know that the other is dying. "Now is all the time I have" has so much more meaning than both of them realize. Both of them are reaching for meaning in their last moments, yet the weight of their words are so much heavier than both of them realize 😭
From my understanding, it's not so much that Luke "stole" Asch's life from him, but in part that he's having a hard time grasping that Luke is his own person and not just merely his replica. Asch, from what I know of his character, tends to look down on replicas and views them as less than human because they were essentially clones of people who already exist, and because of this, he thinks Luke should be more like him, which is why his criticisms of Luke are often so biting. While he is angry at Luke for taking away the life he could've had, he also can't except that Luke, being a replica, is actually growing and developing as a person, and cannot understand why, partly because Asch doesn't have people who are willing to support him and help him better himself in the same way Luke has with the rest of the party; in this regard, it makes him feel even more like a failure, and it frustrates him to know that his replica is succeeding where he failed. In that sense, he wants Luke to own up to him becoming a better person and acknowledge the growth he's experienced, he knows that Luke DESERVES better than him for what he was able to accomplish where Asch himself, the original, failed, and because of this, rather he acknowledges it or not, this is why he can't stand to see Luke putting himself down the way he has been since he decided to try to become a better person
