0-60 is high 6's and 1/4 mid 14's to low 15's but thats not what this car is about. Its basically irrelevant. You don't buy this car to go fast, you buy it because you can drive it at 100% and have buckets of fun without getting into jail time territory speed wise.
200 hp for 2.0l is pretty well done, its very hard to pull out more without sacrificing the integrity of the motor, or breaking laws, you can get more aftermarket about 30 more while keeping it NA but voiding any warranties.
It's like the perfect sports car design. I'm still hoping there's a future BRZ/86 with a lot more power from factory. Something like 270-300hp would be reasonable, and it would still allow the Supra to remain a step above it. I love the way it looks and I think it's aging well.
the accord v6 also starts at 30k when this is 6k cheaper and a lot more modifiable. you also get rwd. this is the most interesting car you can get for the price
The part that is miles better engineering and development that lumps like the mustang and genesis. The part this gives this car a lower centre of gravity than any porsche and lamborghini out there. The part that also gives people a taste of what driving is Really all about.
I truly wish there'd be a comparo between the FR-S/BRZ, S2000, and Miata, with results showing fastest road course times and detailed explainations on which is the "MOST FUN"" to drive, and which is the "BEST HANDLING" car. Also as dumb as this may sound, it'd be interesting to see a compare/contrast vid between Tc and FR-S (ex: 0-60mph, 1/4mile, handling, in-car audio of engine sounds). But then i suppose a video like that would simply display what the Tc wish it could be.
@nextselection... You're right!! I have one too haha.. But it is my wife car. I have a supra turbo. And last week, I takes her car to greddy performance while she was at work. Lol but end up buying a eibach spring at fr sport instead.. Now need a perfect wheels.. But keep the video coming.. Love it!!
I said '80s AND '90s. That wasn't that long ago, and those were actually trying to be fast. The FR-S is just a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder commuter car that also looks sporty, so the fact that it can beat a V8 Mustang is impressive.
So did i, the reason for that is because they were testing roughly a mile above sea level somewhere in Colorado, and with no turbo the engine bogs down and there is not enough torque to propel it to 60 very quick
I think you missed the point of the car. They wanted to create it as light as possible, which meant everything was designed for weight savings. Just because you didn't see sheet metal in the wheel wells doesn't mean that its cheap
Ok if the FRS has such a sublime power/weight, why does it take 8 seconds to get to 60 mph? My favorite car is a GT3RS which has power and handling. My favorite car for a reasonable price is a Z06 corvette which has power and handling. My favorite car for under 10k is an M3 which has power and handling.
It's a great car. Very fun to drive. For the money it needs a little bit more power. Not much just a little bit more. I'd say 50 more horsepower to be perfect for the price.
It's more or less a badge swap, I suppose the front bumper is a little different in styling but essentially if you live outside the US buy the Toyota if you live inside the US buy the Subaru, I hate Subaru but it's a better badge then Scion.
5-years down the road when aftermarket parts thrive for these those bastards that think the FRS is BS will regret it. I don't hate this car, but don't REALLY love it. Doesn't really look good, but is good for the money. I hope young ricers won't end up messing the reputation up. The only thing between me and this is weather conditions, it snows like hell where I am. Light weight RWD isn't the best option lol
charjohnnie sic Yup, way to jump on that that bandwagon guy.. Or should I say, hate train!!! Actually, the FR-S delivers very similar performance to similarly priced 4cyl sports coupes / hot hatches.. Cars like the Civic SI, Ford ST and VW GTI... With all of them having around 200hp, 0-60 times of about 6 seconds, mileage of around 30mpg, and prices of around 25K. Sure, none of them are "fast", they're quick... But certainly not "slow".
well if is a boxer engine like the one in the imperza (wrong spelling) , They could get 500bhp like in the rally cars used in American Rally.. But more power in a lightweight car would be a lot of fun to drive.
Debadge and rebadge. The FR-S is no different than the base model GT86. The Subaru is nearly identical as well. If you're choosing a car based on looks alone (and then decided to buy the BRZ over the FR-S), you've got bigger issues. The Lexus vs. Lotus argument is invalid. They're not even in the same market. Nobody with any sense looks at Scion as a "plastic death trap". It's by Toyota, which means safe. Cheap maybe, but that's their purpose. Gratz on spending $2k on badges and a mustache.
My "excuse" will be the FRS is finally at a reasonable price. Duh. I'd buy an FRS with 10k miles for $10k. Just comparing new to new shows you can't think complicated thoughts. Market price is where it's at. And the FRS BOTTOM LINE... is way above market price. I feel bad for the first few suckers who are buying it now. Just like those who paid $30k for the first 2001 WRX. I almost spit up my coffee with that comment about the Vette driving school. Thanks
This is a good car really fun to drive here's why people hate it, it costs to much. If it was priced right at $20k for 200hp which it should be then people would continue to sing praises they would not complain. But this car is about $30k at that price people start to ponder what else they could get for that price. Then they start to get bitter because of the feeling of getting robbed or cheated. This is all show and no go it is incredibly slow a f****** minivan is faster. It may handle incredibly well but that doesn't mean s*** by itself. It needs more power or a drop in price. It is a fun car to drive but not at $30,000 and please don't give me any b******* about it costing $25k. go to any dealership you will not find one at that price on average you're going to find them to be $27k-$28k then add all the b******* dealer cost you're looking at $30,000 f*** that rather buy a Mustang.
Acceleration wise this car feels like my s2000 without the vtec xD which is still plenty for the streets. Could use some more grip and power for the track tho..
Saying it has "no power" is completely stupid, since power means nothing. Power to weight ratio is what matters, and the FRS only weighs 2700 lbs. Expecting it to drive like a car with 400 HP is stupid. The FRS is as fast as an RX-8. It sounds like you just want power and no handling, which means you're not really a driving enthusiast. Let me guess, your favorite car is a Challenger, right? If you're going to tell me you like handling, then drive an FRS before bitching about it.
Guys- his name is NismoFury. Nismo. He wants the power of a Z car combined with the agile swing of the FRS- which yeah, is impossible, but well placed.
your point? maybe that would be car shopper doesnt care about horsepower nor does he/she want 4 doors... obviously you dont need power to have fun in this car but it seems everyone disagrees like sheep >_>
Wheres the track test? 0-60 1/4 mile? Well here it is; launching hard 0-60 can come up in 7.3 sec but real world youre lookin at 8.5 sec. 1/4 in 16.3 real world. Mpg is about 27 combined real world. Handles flat feels solid this car is low to the ground. Great for handling and driving fun not so great getting in and out. Good car but not at $30k. Thats what youre gonna pay at dealers. Never seen one at $25k. Starting price means nothing. Actual dealer price is what matters dealers wont come down
My argument is what gets more car with 25k. Not the FRS. Handling is nothing without power. You need both. The FRS is the opposite of a drag racer... all handling no power. Pretty dumb formula.
Yes, you can get any number of good cars used. That's not the point, is it? You're comparing a used car to a new car, which is stupid. Also the E36 M3 weighs 3219 lbs, not 3100. Again, the FRS's power to weight ratio is the same as the E36 M3's. The difference is that the M3 weighs more and it handles worse, not to mention that at 12 years old and 100k miles it's falling apart, has electrical problems and generally sucks ass. Still sound like a good deal to you?
Shows how much engineering you actually know. A low center of gravity is nothing by itself. The boxster is wider, therefore the CG/width ratio would be lower on a Boxster. And whats the point of a good handling car if it rolls on bicycle tires and is powered by a hamster wheel, and they STILL charge you more than a 300 hp Mustang. Yeah real show of engineering prowess there! bahaha.
The next gen frs will be way better so ill wait. This thing is too low on torque and horsepower, not to mention that interior is awful and super cheap!
A big bargain? You dont know what you are talking about. It cost me $30k otd. @200hp. Thats not a bargain. Dealers will not negotiate. And they add every bs charge they can. Its a fun car and could use 50hp+. That wont upset any balance. You dont know what you are talking about. So quit questioning other ppl. You obviously are no expert. You sound like a fanboy. Quick base mod should give me the fix.
Oh so $65k for a new M3 is reasonable but $25k for a new FR-S isn't? Or are you still having trouble with the concept of new vs. used? For that kind of cash I can buy a brand new CTS-V that will whoop that M3's ass up and down each and every street in the country, so it seems like the M3 is a big fat waste of money to me. Seriously, 400 HP for $65k? Are you serious? It's like you're throwing money away. You don't seem to be very good with money. Or math in general.
A car that's fun to drive and has good MPG......hard to beat that.
After 5 years owning the car. The good MPG is overrated. I average around 20-22 mpg in the city.
@@alansmilealot 6 spd manual
@@2damaxmr2 that’s actually very good city mileage. What mr2? My last one was a gen4 sw20
dude, this guy is like 94 years old. gotta love him
Does that make him 105 now?
0-60 is high 6's and 1/4 mid 14's to low 15's but thats not what this car is about. Its basically irrelevant. You don't buy this car to go fast, you buy it because you can drive it at 100% and have buckets of fun without getting into jail time territory speed wise.
My favorite Toyota product on the market!
Too small? I'm 6'5'' and fit well in the car. If you are referring to lack of storage space...its a sports car, live with it.
I want this car so badly.
200 hp for 2.0l is pretty well done, its very hard to pull out more without sacrificing the integrity of the motor, or breaking laws, you can get more aftermarket about 30 more while keeping it NA but voiding any warranties.
"you can even turn off all the traction aids for maximum entertainment.." :D
THIS GUY NEVER GETS OLD!!!
So happy to finally get this car ! So much planned for it
It's like the perfect sports car design. I'm still hoping there's a future BRZ/86 with a lot more power from factory. Something like 270-300hp would be reasonable, and it would still allow the Supra to remain a step above it. I love the way it looks and I think it's aging well.
270-300 would’ve priced it out it’s price range.
the accord v6 also starts at 30k when this is 6k cheaper and a lot more modifiable. you also get rwd. this is the most interesting car you can get for the price
The part that is miles better engineering and development that lumps like the mustang and genesis. The part this gives this car a lower centre of gravity than any porsche and lamborghini out there. The part that also gives people a taste of what driving is Really all about.

It's so beautiful
I see so many designs from so many cars into just this one.
Did I completely miss the acceleration and braking tests?
Also the material are somewhat better, and some cost is added on for the xenons up front and the addition of the push button start etc.
Love it!!
14.5 through the quarter mile. That's not bad. Mustang GTs in the '80s and '90s couldn't beat that, and they weren't exactly heavy.
That's stupid to match up a mustang from the 80's against a newer scion. But hey my 94 Vette runs circles around it.
I said '80s AND '90s. That wasn't that long ago, and those were actually trying to be fast. The FR-S is just a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder commuter car that also looks sporty, so the fact that it can beat a V8 Mustang is impressive.
lol but everything out of the 80's was slow
this show has not changed at all in 20 years
So did i, the reason for that is because they were testing roughly a mile above sea level somewhere in Colorado, and with no turbo the engine bogs down and there is not enough torque to propel it to 60 very quick
wow waiting for this review for a long time.
I think you missed the point of the car. They wanted to create it as light as possible, which meant everything was designed for weight savings. Just because you didn't see sheet metal in the wheel wells doesn't mean that its cheap
Power/weight is what you should have argued. Plus this engine hit the sweet spot of 100hp per liter. Why troll?
there were 2 pretty husky people in the car... and they were at high altitude which decreases engine power because of the less dense air
The price difference between the BRZ and FR-S is mostly the GPS system that comes standard in the BRZ. I also prefer the suspension setup of the BRZ.
Great review. I wouldn't mind getting one of these in black when I trade in the Mustang GT.
What about the balance engineering and handling? -_- and the fact that its probably the only affordable properly focused sports car on the market.
The car of the people, what can I say
Only on the limited model, not the regular (premium) model.
No 0-60 or 1/4 times?
Clearly people buy a sports car for its CO2 emissions and energy impact score.
0 60 time = too slow 1/4 time = too slow
0-60 in 6.2 seconds with the manual transmission. Auto takes 7.1 or something lol
1:35 Nasty scab. Barf
One example: You can get a WRX with more power, good handling, and is bigger. What kind of dummy would get a FRS?
Apparently this comment never gets old either. Every motorweek video
It's a great car. Very fun to drive. For the money it needs a little bit more power. Not much just a little bit more. I'd say 50 more horsepower to be perfect for the price.
witch one would u choose bro? the scion or the subaru?
Heal up John! Whatever happened to your left arm. I totally see what you did there, lol.
That's very affordable. Especially considering the handling and thought gone into the car.
What was up with that guys knuckle
since when 200 hp are not much?
It's more or less a badge swap, I suppose the front bumper is a little different in styling but essentially if you live outside the US buy the Toyota if you live inside the US buy the Subaru, I hate Subaru but it's a better badge then Scion.

Fun but Really Slow!

well if is a boxer engine like the one in the imperza (wrong spelling) , They could get 500bhp like in the rally cars used in American Rally.. But more power in a lightweight car would be a lot of fun to drive.
They had to go with the guy with a scab on his hand to do the interior shots.
Holy fuck he is still alive. XD
Debadge and rebadge. The FR-S is no different than the base model GT86. The Subaru is nearly identical as well. What part of $25k for 200 hp is affordable?
so your argument is that hp on a mustang muscle car is a better handler than a balanced sports car?
no the brz looks like the frs Toyota designed the body and interior or both cars and Subaru did the engine and drivetrain
This is a good car really fun to drive here's why people hate it, it costs to much. What the hell are hybrid wheels?
I wonder what kind of horsepower people will be able to pump out of this tiny boxer engine. Just like people getting 800+ horsepower out of the Supra.
Acceleration wise this car feels like my s2000 without the vtec xD which is still plenty for the streets. Could use some more grip and power for the track tho..
No quarter mile?
It's also about $300,000 more.
its like review from the early 90s

WRX engine swap coilovers and its possible
it's the fuel pump that makes a chirping noise. the dealer will replace it for free
@Motorweek how come the geezer never drives any cars?
Couldn't agree more!
your point? maybe that would be car shopper doesnt care about horsepower nor does he/she want 4 doors... obviously you dont need power to have fun in this car but it seems everyone disagrees like sheep >_>
Not a test..no hard numbers and no test loop mileage figures...

you can get better times, 0 to 60 in around 6.6 to 6.8, and 1/4 aroun 14.9 to 15
2800 lbs isn’t light!
What are you talking about? It absolutely is light by today's standards.

He punched the board where the nail head was when practicing Martial Arts.
its already a big bargain for a car and u request for 50 more horsepowers? if it had 50 more horsepowers the balance would be upset
Actually, more horsepower and torque is better
Imagine a 5.0 V8 from the Lexus ISF in this puppy!!! Zoom Zoom baby!!
This is the perfect car for a food delivery person.
Awesome
TRD now make the FRS a new Supra like the old days
Funny, everyone else I checked with said it's under powered. Not a fast car at all.😢
Should've came with a GR V6 motor
Or a used C5 with a serious supercharger on it.... the list goes on.
Why is he in a mini? LOL
Yeah and you pay out the ass for it. You're paying about 2x more per mile when buying this car for 25k compared to
U can find a used G37 for that price.
I'm not trolling. I'm trying to educate. Why spend this much money on an average ass car?
and you are in a mini ~"~
Yes, you can get any number of good cars used. That's not the point, is it? You're comparing a used car to a new car, which is stupid. Also the E36 M3 weighs 3219 lbs, not 3100. Again, the FRS's power to weight ratio is the same as the E36 M3's. The difference is that the M3 weighs more and it handles worse, not to mention that at 12 years old and 100k miles it's falling apart, has electrical problems and generally sucks ass.
Still sound like a good deal to you?
John still goin at It looL
nobody with an frs will ever be jelious of your camry
I kinda figured so, but you never really know about some people. lol
I feel like i'm watching the Price is Right.
Lol My moms civic has wishbone suspension in the rear!
Shows how much engineering you actually know. A low center of gravity is nothing by itself. The boxster is wider, therefore the CG/width ratio would be lower on a Boxster. FR-S stands for (Front engine) (Rear wheal drive) (Sport) not (For) (Real) (Scion) lol
Needs +100hp to compete with a v6 camry
The next gen frs will be way better so ill wait. This thing is too low on torque and horsepower, not to mention that interior is awful and super cheap!
Yes and FRS also stands for Fool Responds Stupidly.
I am sure that FR-S is very good driver's car.
But it is too small, and its design is too plain.
It was disappointing.
