    The Viggen manual advises not to use the brakes at all for reversing, you're supposed to use forward thrust to "brake".

      True. This is of course to eliminate the risk of tail strikes.
      The anti skid of the brakes don’t work when the wheels are rolling at a low speed so there’s a substantial risk of wheel lock-up, even if you are braking carefully.
      So, when taxiing backwards, stay off the brakes and use the engine to brake. Just remember to open the reverser petals first..! ;)

      Noticed that when I left rubber on the runway lol

    2 things about the landing Cap: Firstly, put your hud down in the lower position to make life a lot easier because you'll be able to see all the symbols, and secondly, land slightly flatter and then use brakes +thrust reverser the entire way to get about 2/3 of the landing distance you had.

  • @svmik
    @svmik 5 лет назад +6

    It is also advised to pull back on the stick when using a lot of thrust with the reverser - this way front wheel is unloaded and plane is more stable.
    Thx for the video!

      Should be careful with the timing of this. As far as I remember, the reverse thruster working depends on if there is weight on the front wheel. If you try to pull back on the stick, before sufficient weight is on the front wheel and the reverse burner activates, you might actually keep the reverse burner from activating.
      I've had some instances where I landed and I had to use forward stick to get the nose down to the tarmac and get the reverse burner to activate.

      @@Sunesen Correct, stick forward first to make sure front wheel is down, but when you hear reverser engage, pull stick back.

      @@svmik The way I get the nose wheel down is with the wheel brakes. I land with about 20% wheel brake already applied, the nose wheel slams into the runway and the reverser enages, then adjust wheel brakes as needed for maximum braking while still keeping stability.

      @@Nails077 this also sounds like a good idea, never tried that before!

    Good tutorial! There is a video on an early Viggen failing during landing, but I think that was because the nose wheel steering engaged and it resulted in ground loop. Oh and Cap if you could do a video about ground loop it would be great.
    Never ever use breaks on wet runways with viggen use the thrust reverser!

  • @gketchup777
    @gketchup777 5 лет назад +4

    Actually, I read it somewhere that in aircrafts with thrust reverser, using the brakes when moving backwards is forbidden for reasons displayed here. You should slow down with the engine(s), putting it back to normal mode and adding some thrust till you stop and only brake then.

    • @Sunesen
      @Sunesen 5 лет назад

      Yup, the manual states never to use wheel brakes while going backwards.

    Great video as always
    never use brakes after the reverser has engaged....just a small tap of brakes as soon as the main gear touch down to get the nose gear
    activation....and the nose gear must be compressed to activate
    i've never experienced the 1 second rule for engaging the reverser....maybe that's only on the real plane?
    done a wheelie down the runway and the tap of brakes and reverser on to stop
    when the reverser is on you can push the throttle to full (Stage 3 Afterburner) the afterburner
    will not activate when reverser is on
    don't get why the need to pull back stick would make it more stable......
    stick always neutral after landing and if brakes are needed the plane noses down anyway
    the real airplane is always nose down when doing displays showing of the reverser

    Main reason the Viggen has a thrust reverser is because during development their preferred engine from Rolls-Royce was canceled so they went with the RM8 which is a locally produced and modified version of the P&W JT8D commercial engine.

    Great Video cap and thank you for pronouncing Gipen right, last part was hilarious ha ha ha ;)
    Keep em awesome videos up I love em, looking forward to every each one of them.
    But.. yeah there is a but again :P ha ha ha
    You never use the break when reversing on ground in the AJS37, you just turn reverse off and add some thrust forward to slow down to a stop.
    Then only then you apply breaks once it is in a complete stand still ;)
    And when you land you do not use rudder at all to prevent it from wiggle left right during thrust reverse.
    Once wheel are on ground and reverse is active the nose dip down then all you need to do to prevent it from wiggle is pull back the stick and hold it there.
    The aircraft handle some of the rudder on its own.
    Reason it wiggle like that is the enormous weight put on front landing gear when reverse activate fully, rudder input on heavy load can make it worse.
    pulling the stick back once it happen how ever that lifts the nose up and take of the load from front landing gear and plane stop wiggle.
    Here you can see me do a +370Km/h touch down with full 100% power thrust reverse and no input on rudder, all I did was pull back stick once nose dipped down from reverse thrust and wait.
    And I got down to taxi speed about 50-70km/h in less than 250 meters from when wheel touch down.

    DCS: be careful of tailstrikes as that damages the back of the aircraft and the front landing gear
    War thunder: Snap off the wheels to land faster.
