I am going to try this evening but I'm afraid Iv'e already applied it to the raw canvas. I wanted to put acrylic over some portions of it. Is that o.k ?
It would be safe to have a protective layer before apply acrylics. If you are using acrylics, check this video ruclips.net/video/Scd3KBPsOKs/видео.html Her method would not wholly work for oils. There is more free information on her site about it. Good luck with your project and don’t afraid to experiment!

Hi!!! I loved your video and your painting! Good job! Thanks for sharing. I have a question, I found your video when researching on this precise topic, since I'm restoring a statue and there are some parts where I want to apply gold leaf and then paint on top of it, but I want to try and preserve the gold's original glow, I'll be painting with acrylic colors, is it possible to do so? I thought for instance of diluting the colors with turpentine so they're more transparent, is that possible? Thanks in advance! Keep up the good work! Greetings from Argentina.
Thank you so much! I think everything you described is possible, but you will need to use a suitable medium with acrylics. Regarding working with acrylic on top of gold leaf, I would advise looking at Nancy Reyner videos, etc. She has free videos, posts, books + Skillshare training (you can watch it for free during the trial period). Also, it never hurts to write manufacturer for advice. I had a good experience writing an email to Golden acrylics. They made a few tests in the past regarding gold leaf and their mediums, so I hope they could give you knowledgeable advice on the topic. Good luck ☀️
Forget to mention I would not dilute acrylics with turpentine but use the proper medium from Golden.

I made some tests and tried to paint directly on top of the gold leaf with undiluted acrylic paint and as it's not very covering and the gold leaf is not mordant it was as if the paint was indeed transparent and the results were really pretty, it shines beautifully. Thank you!

Yes, you can but you need to protect it first. You will find a lot of information on Nancy Reiner website, and I remember that Golden made some blog post a long time ago about the technical aspects of it.

How did you seal the gold leaf ? How to make it at home ?
I used shellack to seal it. It is easy to google different recipes. I think I have one on my website as well

Can you varnish over real gold leaf?
Yes, I wrote to Gamblin they said you could use Gamvar without an issue. Just double-check with your supplier.

Hi, it is impossible to paint with acrylic on top of the oil. But you can paint with oils on top of acrylic paint if the acrylic is dry.
