I just wanna say wow man, this looks like it took some real hard work to make and it doesn't seem like you're a big content creator group ( yet ;) ) and still this video is very well crafted so mad props. When I noticed the amount of views and then subs count I realized you must have appeared in many more home pages on YT, and you deserve it. That said, I think you can do some really minor changes to improve this video's (and perhaps future content?) quality: I would've liked a longer edit of the riff on the start just to know what we're talking about, I haven't listened to tool in a few years so I'm rusty and didn't get the riff till the end really... also, the whispering part was fine if it was a bit slower I guess or just a bit more volume to it, I'm listening through speakers and didn't get a word of it. Lastly, well, I get that it's a family-friends kind of video so the edits with the ghost/demon/thing were supposed to be a comic relief from an otherwise hardcore music theory video but I just didn't get it and it was drawing attention from what is (I think) the main content of the video. I tried to make it as polite as possible, I mean no disrespect and hope you have a great time both on the tour and/or making content :)
This is a great video and you’re funny. And you explain things well and clearly love tool. I’d watch a lot more of you breaking down tool songs. Also, songs from Discipline by King Crimson can really easily demonstrate polymeter and phasing. Also Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich. As a prog and fusion drummer I can seriously give you my word that this is one of the most challenging song that I ever learned. Hell I can't even nail the final climatic part of this song. And trust me I have played some Dave Weckl, when he was in Chick Corea (some Gary Novak too), Vinnie Colaiuta, Gavin Harrison (both in King Crimson and Porcupine Tree), even some Carter Beauford. But this thing called *ROSETTA STONNED* is a monster on the drums. Let me just skip the whole insane part of the first two act of the song (which does include some sick chops, a insane 9/8 patter on the snare, tom and hi hat and that weird offbeat hi hat sizzle while he is alsooooo playing in odd time of 11/8 broken in 5/8 and 6/8) and come in after the drummer solo in the middle around the part where the bass comes in : Danny carey is playing a rudiment called Swiss Army Triplet in 6/4 time signature with his hands( F R L, but he actually starts with the R) and on the 3th quater note, he breaks the 16th note swiss pattern and put an accent on the 3rd quater note with his left hand, which is quite hard, mind you (and also don'tforget he breaks it agin every now and then to play some right hand accents on the bell of the ride). Ohh but it doesn't end there, and after that Danny's bass drum feet is actually playing in 5/4 time in a crazy insane patter which changes three times throughout the song, like the 5/4 bass drum patter after the solo, during that bass roff and after the climax are wayyyyyyy different. And also don't forget the quater not hi hat stomps on his left foot which I actually count in 3/4 as it is easier for at the last quater of that bar, it coincides with the left hand accent on the open snare. And funally at the climax, when Adam.is playing in that 11/4 guitar riff, Maynard and Danny comes in at 5/4 and then Danny does the same very hard and complex 6/4 Siss Triplet patters with his hands while the his right bass foot, though it is in 5/4, it is different pattern than bwfore (as I have earlier said) and this patter is more challenging as it is faster and complex. And then that bass patter changes into a 5/4 double bass which makes my brain blow to kingdom come as playing it above the 6/4 broken down, modified Swiss Army patter is more difficult than riding a Hooker on Steroids. And there you have it, in a nutshell : Danny's hands are in a complex, broken down Swiss Army Triplet in 6/4 with left hand single accents on the snare, the bass drum right foot is in 5/4 which has three different patterns throughout the song and his left hi hat foot is in 3/4 (or 6/4) gluing everything together in Quater notes. All in all this is a bloody hard song on the drums, like realllyyyyyyy hard song

I'm the bassist in a dixieland hip-hop bluegrass Mongolian Klesmer band here in Alaska, and I'd tried to make your very point. Also, as part of the wager, she now has to learn the final guitar solo from Comfortably Numb from the "Pulse" album -- all 11 or 12 choruses.....
Kinda reminds me of Lars Ulrich on that Metallica song. He begins the sequence by playing the kick drum on 1 and 3, and while maintaining that pattern, he deftly lays down this intricate pattern on the snare, playing on 2 and 4. I've even known him to really push the boundaries by putting the snare on 1 and 3, with the kick on 2 and 4. He's been known to do this while also playing either quarter notes, or 8th notes on the hi hats. It boggles the mind! 🥁🤣

Thank God we don't have to work these groves in reverse. It's simple to play a groove and then map it out especially with the software that will do it for you. If it had to be a product of theory first I wonder if it would ever turn out as awesome as it does. Not sure if I made sense but it sure did to me. And Adam, you are genuinely funny. I would like to hear someone explain Pneuma. I found that the best way to listen is with headphones in a darkened room and keeping perfectly still without trying to move my head or tap my feet, and just let it wash over me. That way my brain stays intact.

You are an odd duck, dude. I learned some stuff I didn't need to know about Tool's rhythms but it will get me into the music that much deeper, like a fat little parasite. And even when I wasn't really learning, it was fun. Earlier I watched a reaction video for Rosetta Stoned and that riff ripped my guts out when it kicked, just like always.

I “brute forced” this and managed to learn it pretty well (in my head, mind you. I don’t even play drums but if I did I would probably get a hernia or something). Brute forcing it only took me about 8 or 9 years.

3:4 or 4:3 “pass the golden butter”. You’ll be emphasizing the dominant 3 in the beat. “Pass butter to the left” you’ll hear the dominant 4.
Apparently Danny Carey actually learned it as “pass the goddamn butter” so using the method seems pretty fitting

I “brute forced” this and managed to learn it pretty well (in my head, mind you. I don’t even play drums but if I did I would probably get a hernia or something). Brute forcing it only took me about 8 or 9 years.
