Thanks Jeff for taking the time to do this. I'm always trying to find a surfable wave with my 212x. I have the transom bag, Wakewedge and Jetwash Deflector and I installed larger port and starboard rear compartment bags.
Great video Jeff! Thanks for taking the time to put that together. We’re still working on dialing in a good setup for our Scarab 215. Can’t wait to hit the water next season again!
the angle of the sun on the test vs the wakewedge might give people the impression that the wave is "dirty" compared to the deflector. Crazy what the suns angle and lighting does for perception.
Thank you so much for making these videos. I think my preference would be the jet wash deflector for how compact and easy it is to use. I just sold my Tige Z3 and I am looking back into getting a Yamaha for a few year until my 1 and 3 year old kids get old enough to really use a pro surf boat like I had. I am leaning to the 195s for the supercharged motor and price point but I would love a 212x, just not the price.
We have been using the Jetwash Deflector since we got it and it is very nice. Easy to stow, easy to install and best part is I practice riding switch on the starboard side of the wake.
This is from Jet Boat Pilot's website - -Used Only During Wake Surfing Sessions, JetWash Deflector Is Raised Out Of The Water At Plane Speeds And Cannot Be Harmed If User Fails To Remove Prior To Acceleration. So I am guess no, it will not help. But subscribe to the channel and we will test it!
Where is the battery(or batteries) on your boat? On my 2005 AR230 they are in the back, port side storage. I'd like to try a ballast bag there like you've done but it doesn't seem like a great idea with the batteries there, at least without making a divider or something.
I have a 2012 Yamaha ar240 and got the 800lb transom bag and new jet wash deflector and couldn’t believe the difference it made in the wake! Now I’m hooked, what fat sac ski locker bag do I need for my boat?
Hey Jeff, have you tested the Jet Wash Deflector without ballast? I tried it and don't see a difference at all. I know you need ballast to make the wake bigger, but I assumed I would still see some difference and I didn't.
I have not. Yes ballast makes the wave bigger but it also leans the boat in order to break up the wave and create a surf wave. That is why one side has a surf wave and the other is washed out.
Hey Jeff, thanks for the GREAT video, I am currently in the position of trying to figure out which one to buy. I just picked up a 14 AR240. I know i need the ski locker and rear deck bag, just cant decide on the wake wedge or the deflector. the new deflector is much closer in price to the wake wedge. have you been able to test their new one and see how it does? any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Here is my opinion on the Jet Wash Deflector vs the Wake Wedge. They both work equally as good at cleaning up the jet wash for the surf wave and you will not be disappointed in anyway with the quality or build of the products. Both companies are freakin awesome and stand behind their products. BUT........ I enjoy riding regular and switch (Port and Starboard side) and with the Jet Wash deflector I can do that very easily. With the Wake Wedge I was stuck to my Port side wave only and I would have to buy another Wake Wedge $$$$ for the starboard side plus keep 2 of them on the boat. Now, you can get the Wake Wedge in a Universal design for both sides but it cost $1,000 and takes time to switch over. Also, Jet Wash Deflector installs alot easier when you are on the water. I do realize the ar240 series boats have a different design Jet Wash deflector which is due to the fact they have different swim platform dimensions and so it cost more for that model. So for us we don't use the Wake Wedge anymore and 100% use the Jet Wash Deflector. Does that make sense?
@@JeffDoesThis That makes a lot of sense. So have you tried the new design that they have now for the 24' models? it appears to adjust side to side depending on what side your surfing? once its installed it basically makes your ladder not usable, do you have any trouble boarding the boat without the use of the ladder? the wake wedge seems to offer a very nice crisp wave but the difficulty with installation and not being able to surf the other side has me concerned.... thanks for all your help!
The Jet Wash Deflector for the AR240 is not a new design but a model specific design depending on the year of your boat. The AR230 doesn't need to swing because of the distance from the ladder to the pump, where as the AR240 needs it to swing(due to hull design). As far as not being able to use the ladder, it's not that big of a deal for me, plus the ass end of the boat in pretty low in the water(from all the ballast) so it no problem getting in. If you want to surf you should be in somewhat decent, physical shape and should have enough strength to get in your boat with a ladder period.
@@JeffDoesThis right on, i was not aware of the different design due to hull, i thought it was an improvement..... Ive done a fair amount of surfing but the last two years just been foil surfing behind my Reinell I/O. which has been great but i wanted my kids to start surfing. have you foiled behind your yammy? if so do you run ballast or can you go ropeless without any extra ballast and just the jetwash deflector? with my I/O i was able to add a swell wake shaper and just foil without the rope no problem.
Yes, I foiled behind the boat using my Slingshot F/Surf with no ballast and I can almost foil ropeless on the second wave back. For me it's a skill issue(lack of practice) and not a wave issue. We spent a lot of time last year wakeboarding behind the boat to practice for the World Wake Association amateur events across the USA.
The 21ft version is for both 21ft and 23ft boats. So if you have a 230 you would buy the 21ft bag. There should be a link in the video description for the bag. I know it's confusing and I am not sure why the don't better explain it.
@@JeffDoesThis They don’t make it for my 2015 either, but if you cut the hole to match the boot anchor point it’s supposed to work. Thanks for all the tips and tricks on these Yamaha jet boats
You have options and I would go with Jet Boat Pilot or Gatlin over the Yamaha wake booster. From the feedback i have seen, the wake booster is the worst.
You can't use them both at the same time because the Wake Wedge it would interfere with the ladder and that's how you mount the Jet Wash Deflector. Plus it wouldn't make any difference, they both deflect the jet wash perfectly.
I have stern and direct drive boats, not a v drive but it just depends on what you want to do. I can surf this boat and also go 50mph. Plus with twin engines i feel like I'm never stranded on the water. Also, no gear box, water pump, impeller so maintence is a breeze. Could be worse, I could buy an electric dirt bike instead of a gas dirt bike.
@@JeffDoesThis Or buy a KTM, and an electric! 😍 We actually went into demo the newest Yamaha boat and the Yamaha dealer themselves told us if our primary use was wake surfing, to go across the road and buy a real wake surf boat. I "can" surf behind a 19 ft Bayliner bowrider, doesn't make it a surf boat. Nothing better than seeing the Yamaha guys with a giant water bladder hanging off the back 😂
First off you are talking to the 2019 AMA D17 Hare Scramble Champion Vet B Class, so I know my dirt bikes. You should watch some of my surfing videos it does an awesome job for surfing. I have surfed behind a 2007 Supra, 2010 Mastercraft and my 08 Yamaha AR230 puts off almost a better surf wave. But I only spent $21,000(pre covid).
@@JeffDoesThis Pick up a boat made after 2016 and you'll change your opinion. 16 is when most manufacturers went to a dedicated surf hull, or at the least, improvements in tabs, gates etc. ATX, HeyDay, NXT, Sanger, Axis are all putting out models in the same price range as the 22 Yamaha, and they are light-years ahead. Even Regal, which is a crap boat, came out with the LS surf, which is much better. Yamaha has a great layout. With REAL factory ballast (3000+) Tabs and a prop, it would be twice the boat it is now.

New to surfing but kids also tube, ski and board would the jet wash deflector also help reduce the spray for other activities?
No, the jetwash deflector only hits they water when at slow speeds (surf speeds)
