The last part of the video really resonates with me. Nevertheless I ordered one because I haven't owned a foldable before and I want it because it feels so futuristic. The last time I had a big screen in my hand was in 2013 with the Xperia Z ultra which was such an underrated and a one of a kind device. Pretty much unbiased and a spot on review by the way!

Here's the thing with the slim cover screen, after a while I started to prefer it, it's much easier to type on with one hand and when I pick up my S23 Ultra now it seems too big. I don't see this replacing my laptop, but since I've had the fold 4 I almost never use my tablet. I used to use a tablet every day, but I haven't used my S8 tablet in months, and my Surface Pro maybe 3 times and even then that was only because of the need for a windows app. The fold 4 quite literally replaced my S23 and my tablets which together cost just as much.

Amazinng review, i honestly believe Samsung made the outside screen narrow on purpose more so for a One-Handed use, tho ppl would prefer wider screen like the pixel fold, I think Samsung wanted ppl to use the phone more in a open state than closed. Because if you had the same size as a regular phone (when the fold is closed) you would be less likely to want to open the fold phone. Just a thought provoking perspective.

In the top of screen, RAM/ ROM memory & chipset improvements I realised the following changes:
1.Zf5 fits much better in hands than previous ones.
2.The crease is actually much less noticeable than on my ZF3.
3.The phone is lighter and noticeably thinner than previous ones, and you really feel it in hands.

I've always used covers for my phones since they are all pretty slippery. 😉 For instance, my past 2 phones (Note 10+ and the ZF3) are covered by the Unicorn Beetle and I really like it, but it does make the phone significantly thicker. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thank you for this. I preordered a Fold5. It was mainly because I wanted a bigger screen to watch TV and movies on while on trips. Then I had the realization that the aspect ratio of movies means that most of the screen would just be black bars. I wasn't sure how much of a problem it would really be. When you held up the same video on the S23U and the Fold5, the actual video was exactly the same size. So yeah. I went from being about 75% sure I wanted to switch it for the S23U to 95% sure. Samsung has the Swap program, swap the Fold5 for an S23U for only $1. I think I'm definitely doing that now that I've seen this video. The cons of having the Fold5 over the S23U now vastly outweigh the pros.

    @leonfrancis3418 Год назад +4

It's been so fascinating watching people go from calling this launch iterative and unexciting to suddenly being wowed when they have it in hand.
That said, between you believing this is "just a phone," not ever multitasking, and not even being sure if you want to use your inner screen, I feel pretty confident in saying a folding phone isn't made with your demographic of users in mind.
My fear is that your demographic is then going to influence the designs of these phones for the people who they are made for.
Part of the reason why some people want a wide cover display that replaces a slab phone on their foldable is because they don't want to give up the slab.
They don't want to have to change.
They want a cover screen that gives them no reason to open their folding phone.
That's not how these things were designed in the mind.
There's a reason Samsung refers to the internal display as "the main display."
People wish to use the secondary display as a main, and are docking points from Samsung because of their want to have their cake and eat it too.
Google did just that, they created a foldable whose cover screen is better to use than it's internal display, where apps fail to scale to the screen.
That won't go so well for them, and I guarantee you IF we see a Pixel Fold 2, it's aspect ratio will become narrower on the front, just to better enable app compatibility.
This is all before we get to the fact that the Fold and its narrow candy bar form factor are both easier to hold one handed while unfolded and folded than the Pixel Fold.
All of this would be fine if we could admit this all comes down to subjectivity, but instead people are literally calling the wider cover displays "better" as they lead to poor holding of a 2k cost device and poor app compatibility.
    That's not "better."

I am a content creator for Huawei and I do everything on my phone . There is an app out for anything nowadays. Photolayers is my most used app. My point is, you don't need a folding phone if you are mainly using a slate phone experience. Just get a larger slate phone. It comes down to the individual's needs. If you have a job where you need a tablet that can multitask, has the ability to sign documents, can be seen while outside, and can take excellent photos/videos (like a paramedic), then go with the fold 5. If you just want to show off that you have a foldable, pixel or magic or the open will be fantastic!

I'm puzzled by the issue with the cover screen on a folding phone. If one finds it narrow and difficult and spends around 85% of their time using the cover screen, why opt for a folding phone in the first place? Choosing a regular phone seems like a straightforward solution to me.

Idk i think that it makes no sense to use a regular phone in 2024. Foldables are so good, and cheap. i just upgraded from the fold 3 to 4 for $360 off a seller on ebay. Unlocked in good condition. Paid around the same for the 3 a year ago. Very happy with it. The improvement in weight, width of the front screen, and battery life made it worth it. Did not think it would have been much of an upgrade, but it is. If the fold 5 is even better than i am buying it eventually no doubt.

I've daily driven a Fold 3 for 2 years. I struggled with the question if staying with the Fold platform or going back to a traditional phone. I ended up pre-ordering the Fold 5. I run a small business and really benefit from all the capabilities. A normal phone can multi-task, but the Fold makes it so much more useful with the screen real-estate. I actually prefer the cover screen in its longer configuration. It's easier to use one handed and fits better in my pocket. It opens to the tall configuration which I almost always use.

    @andyH_England Год назад +4

Yes, there are some subtle upgrades that improve the phone over the Fold 4 but the point missed was that this was the fifth version of a new segment and Samsung are being iterative. This simply does not happen with new products, there should be exponential improvements and we have seen that in China with folds improving leaps and bounds. So with all respect, the Fold 5 is a massive disappointment as it needed substantial hardware improvements, mostly in the camera but also fundamental changes like a wider display, a larger battery, an S-pen silo and dust protection.
I am seeing quite a few reviews that claim they were wrong with their initial preview and the Fold 5 is in fact a massive improvement now you have used it, and I am a little unsure why this is (third take today either on YT or Twitter)? The sceptical side of me would think that Samsung has been in touch with reasons that you should highlight and market features?

I feel like it would be heaps of fun to play with at a low cost or for a day or two and Im sure there's some people with different needs and uses that could really squeeze the utilisation out of it. Butttt overall and esp at the price point, I just feel its money for old rope. I mean it's almost £2k which can get you a macbook.
I'd be interested to see the format develop and what would be cool is if they had an S23 (whichever one is newest lol) that has the full samsung specs that can then sidecar into a second phone screen and create a flip.
This way when you wanted that double screen flip format you could modulate it in and when it's driving you nuts or you want a lighter carry you can switch the regular handset.
I feel that's the better way to market it.
Rather like when you sidecar an ipad as a spare monitor screen to a mac set up.

Great video as ever, thank you. I just cannot make up my mind whether to keep the ZF5 and ZFlip5 (I know, I know!) - I ordered both at the same time to test them out and am new to the flip/fold family - coming from a fruity device and just bored of slab phones hence going down this route. However, I cannot decide whether to keep either/both - what worries me is the longevity of both devices (the crease and hinge specifically - though I guess it depends partly on how well (or not) you treat your device). I've had Android phones in the past and currently have the S22 Ultra which I like but I just wanted a change from boring slab . To the other commenters here, a stupid question I know but if you were in my shoes, i.e. NOT new to Android but currently predominantly a fruity user (not too worried about camera in a new phone), if you wanted a change from a slab phone, would you feel comfortable going down the flip/fold route? Probably a really stupid question to ask here considering the content of the video but .... thanks chaps (and chapesses!)

The only reason I'd go for the Ultra is durability or lack of durability of the fold screen, better battery, internal pen storage, 150 EUR price difference after all discounts and the 10 optical zoom cam. Didn't really notice the extra resolution on the 23 Ultra though.

As someone who just ordered a fold 5 i cant speak to the quality of the phone or anything, but I can say the main disappointment as a Note user is the lack of built in S Pen. I ordered Samsung's case with the slim S Pen built in but losing the camera controls with a phone that can prop itself up will be an adjustment. Maybe I'll drop the cash and get the S Pen Pro, but I'd rather have one built in like the Note series. The lack of S Pen support on the cover screen is a little messed up too.
That being said, after seeing the prototype of one with a built in S Pen im excited for the future of foldables.

I’ve been using a Fold 3 for awhile (as well as a S23 Ultra and a iPhone mini). Over time, I’ve developed the habit of carrying the iPhone mini in my pocket (because it’s pocketable), and the Galaxy Watch 5 LTE (leaving my S23 Ultra at home for use at home).
I do not use a case for the Fold because it becomes a tank with it (and pretty much unusable as far as I’m concerned). But without a case, it’s actually thinner and more comfortable than the S23 Ultra. But the added cost of insurance is necessary. I’m seriously considering the Fold 5 to replace the S23 Ultra. And then the Fold 6 next year and done with the Notes and S23 (and S24 Ultra - since rumors are it’s going to be even wider!).
I guess my point here is I like the Folds but without a case. A case just takes away the useability in my opinion. But insurance is necessary and deep pockets and having an additional phone is necessary for when the Fold needs to be replaced and/or repaired.

I guess it adds up... Just cos Honor has digitizer on both screen while Samsung only has inside... just cos Honor has 5000 mah and Samsung doesnt... etc. Fold 5 is impressive for sure, but there is literally so much they could've bettered and they literally just barely caught up to literally every competitor instead at bare minimum. Luckily, Samsung still has an advantage with software, but there is very little to write home about hardware wise when it comes to Fold 5 versus same generation competition.

@@georgehofgren6123 i am pretty sure its the definition of competition, but you also gave to remember its not an even playing ground and it would Be really alarming if Samsung didn't outsell the competition. Samsung is the only player present on every market. Google doesnt sell Pixel Fold in most places and so far only Magic Vs has been released outside China out of the chinese ones.
Then there is the part that Samsung kinda skewes numbers especially in the US, with crazy discounts/tradein deals, they are definitely at Times giving away phones for a loss to be able to say they sold x millions. Competition also doesnt do aggressive deals like that and instead sells for profit. Its good for Samsung they can afford that kinda marketing and it is an extremely value brand. But the Fold 5 im writing this comment on likely isnt staying. It has some benefits with the software but this is not good enough as soon as the competition arrives
