  • I learned this morning that Morgan Spurlock passed away yesterday (May 23, 2024) from cancer at the age of 53. Morgan created the Super Size Me documentary in 2003 and many other projects after that. I met Morgan in 2003 when he was making the documentary. At the time, I was the director of a not-for-profit size acceptance organization (the International Size Acceptance Association or ISAA) and Morgan asked to interview me and Gia Marciano for the film. Gia and I ended up being removed from the final cut of the documentary and that ended up being a blessing in disguise. Even so, I remained friends with Morgan for a few years after that until we eventually lost touch.
It wasn't until 2017 that Morgan admitted to the world that his whole premise for Super Size Me had been a lie due to his neglecting to disclose his chronic alcoholism. None of his medical readings had been accurate throughout the film. In addition, Morgan publicly admitted to his other harmful behaviors with women over the years and essentially cancelled himself, stepping down from his own production company. Then he fought cancer. Morgan is survived by two ex-wives and two sons from those marriages. My condolences to his family.
This 8-minute segment is from The ISAA Rapport, an audio podcast (before they were called podcasts) I co-hosted with Gia from 2002 to 2004. Gia and I talked about our experience with the filmmaker and I think it's worth a listen. It's not disparaging, especially about Morgan. Thanks.
