Master Mechanics: Yoshi Kosaka and Garage Company

- Growing up in Japan, Yoshinobu “Yoshi” Kosaka developed an affinity for motorcycles early on, scavenging abandoned bikes and playing around with their components until he started his career-which only resulted in him buying a bunch of new sports and racing machines to add to his collection.
After moving to Los Angeles in the 1980s, Yoshi continued to amass specimens thanks in no small part to the fallout of the oil crises and the relative abundance of cheap, high-performance componentry to be had by the enthusiast community. When the trove of motorcycles and boxes inevitably outgrew their residential space, Yoshi’s wife Kyoko found a dedicated spot for them in Venice (which he has, unsurprisingly, also outgrown).
Not intending to do anything other than organize and enjoy his trove, Yoshi soon found himself in nearly constant company from the curious likeminded people that found their way to the windows and eventually through the doors.
Eventually, Yoshi’s hobby grew to also become his business, and made a name for Garage Company by offering restorations, modifications, race preparations, and a chance to find some truly rare and unique parts from his own accumulated finds. For someone as enthusiastic as Yoshi, it can be hard to let go of certain parts, or to part ways with bikes he’s worked on, but he maintains that some things will simply never be for sale. Turning a passion into a profession can be trickier than it seems, but there is no sign that Yoshi has become jaded or burnt out; if you ask him what he’d like to do in retirement, he says he’d still be in the shop all day, enjoying some whisky and playing around with his bikes.

This guy has such a beautiful soul. Great man
That's a very happy man and truly he will never "work" a day in his life! Gonna have to give that shop a visit.
I think your comment is the most accurate on the fact he has NEVER worked a day in his life so true.
I love going to Yoshi's shop and just soaking in the vibe, it's only gotten bigger and better over the years. He may be from Japan, but he is a California motorcycle institution, through and through! You'll never feel anything more old school American motorcycle shop than at Yoshi's
I can see the enthusiasm for Motorcycles in this guy!
Thanks for sharing
This guy is the definition of passion
Yes you see the fire in his eyes, cool 😎
Yup.. Webster’s Dictionary definition of motorcycle passion….his portrait..
It's so refreshing to see someone be so excited in their craft, its not a job it's a hobby
He described everything I believe about building bikes. I too like parts, and I am always picturing different combinations of frame, tank, fenders, seat, handlebars, etc to create interesting and unique bikes. Sometimes I wish I had a motorcycle scrapyard so I could build one cool bike from 20 broken ones.
The big smile the entire interview 😅👌🏾
A great story. It would be great if you did several episodes telling the story of a few special motorcycles, and a story of rebuilding them. Thank you.
Recently i passed by his shop he had stephen tylers trike built by indian larry sitting there like nothing his von dutch inspired bikes were some of the best classic choppers ive seen ! He has bulit bikes for david beckam to michel schumacher and manny more and is still modest and easy i love him !!
These videos are simply wonderful
A true paradise and a man who happily lives his dream ... congratulations!
Don’t you just LOVE this guy.....what an absolute champ.
This video just made me smile. A life well lived!
Kosaka-San, you’re awesome. I love your passion. His comments at the end are beautiful. I hope his dreams come true.
Reassuring to see the old format, and watching these great people
Mr Yoshi’s smile while in his garage says it all. Passion, Joy, Knowledge, Taste. Same as Kika’s videos..., how I miss that unequivocally touch of art and quality packed in 7’ symphonies. Drive Tastefully! We miss the old Petrolicious. (One of the Founding Members, for what is worth)
This beautiful man is winning in the race of life.
Nice hobby and great way of life. Regards from Europe Barcelona Spain.
I fucking love this guy. He rocks.

What a delightful personality. Thanks for making this video. ✌🙋🏻♂️
I love this guy. I would spend hours talking to him and polishing pieces 😂

Bloody Yoshi, got my only ever parking ticket outside the shop at Venice, all mesmerized with tee shirts and bikes. keep an eye on time when you go there people. The Garage Company Zone.
Motorbike videos are ALWAYS welcome (as true petrolheads love bikes as well as cars!).
This guy is very passionate in his work.

I would love him to create a Frankenstein bike for me out of all different parts and I bet it would be nice to ride and reliable 💯
I’d go back to California just for Yoshi’s shop.
Do what you love Love what you Do.
This guy is awesome what a wholesome guy

His garage reminds me of the road rash game menu where you have to select a bike.

Google is saying that The Garage Company is permanently closed. Does anyone know if that's actually the case?
@petrolicious you need to talk to shinya kimura
4:33 "I am still nuts"
This guy built David Beckham's knucklehead
His name isn't "This guy", it's Yoshi Kosaka.
Im motorcycle mechanic jete cai
He looks like a 10 year old when he talks about how great it is when his bike.....breaks!!
Mesmerizing story! All love to build motorcycles but like Mr.Yoshi said, sometimes they have to let of their motorcycles which is the toughest part of the job.
More power to mechanics like him. We need more videos on motorcycles and specially videos on mechanics like Mr.Yoshi because motorcycle mechanics are quite underrated.
I just want to see people with the same kind of passion as him. Motorcycles, cars, mechanics, enthusiasts,... doesn't matter.
Could listen to a guy like that for hours.
If you liked this video and want to see some canyon carving, I highly recommend "The booming Triumphs of Garage Company - /RideApart
".
Thank you. 👍🏻 I would love to see longer version though.
He looks like someone who is about to get into a laughing fit at the drop of a hat.
i'm sure Yoshi Mentioned Whisky?....I'm THERE To 'Volunteer'!...I've been known to 'work' for WHISKY!...lol!!!!!
Miss this story-telling that used to be the norm on the channel. Beautifully done 😊
Love this guy. This is something that he's passionate for and that's very admirable .

BRING BACK THIS STYLE OF VIDEO TO PETROLICIOUS!!!
where is yoshi kosaka garage in japan?
that’s the petrolicious i know…
I want to hang out with Kosaka san moto sensei
He likes broken bikes then he must love HARLEYS 🤣
Ha ha I see no Harleys in his garage
@@larsstougaard7097 lol true but had he been in the states he'd be busy lol
@@geemanbmw I heard it was especially in the 90s Harleys was poorly build, I'm not sure if they are better today or just overpriced. I love myself a japanese bike new or old, they seem cool those he repair.
@@larsstougaard7097 yeah it was a company called AMF they were trash i believe they sold harley in the very early 80s i remember people talking about it when I was a little kid back then about how unreliable they were.
@@geemanbmw sound about right. I was a kid at that time too in Europe and a cool guy down the street imported a Harley and there was tons of problems with it. Now remember back it was more a memory of him fixing it, not riding it. But hey at least it looked cool 😋
"restoration, I can't charge enough". Thank you for sharing.
Yoshi is why people enjoy vintage bikes. He brings a smile, and is patient with newbies. Really glad to see this spotlight.
Fun.
I seen this guy on storage wars with Barry Weiss as he loved his bikes as well
No wonder he is from the country of the rising sun, his passion shines through his smile! 😀
Good to see the joy he has for the rebuilding of the bikes , Genuine very refreshing.
Would love to see his tool collection I bet he has some cool old wrenches etc.
This guy’s bike collection is 🤤
the world needs more IT specialists and geriatric nurses and not mechanics
How sad
Thanks for sharing.
