Conrad Stevenson Restorations: An Alfista In America

  • Growing up in Berkley in the 1970s, Conrad Stevenson saved enough paychecks from his dishwashing job to buy his first Alfa Romeo. He took his driver’s license test in an Alfa, and long before he became one of the world’s go-to guys for restorations, he also used a Giulietta Spider in lieu of a business card. People would ask Stevenson who was responsible for the tuned and dialed car, and he would be happy to share that it was all his handiwork.
Stevenson fell for cars early in life-a year and a half stint as a seven-year-old in Europe with his family proved to have a lasting impact-but he never explicitly planned on making a name for his talents in the world of restorations.
It’s easy to sum up the marque’s influence on his life as a snowball that’s been rolling since his childhood and the first GTV that he saw as a young kid riding a Schwinn Stingray around early-‘70s Berkley. Steven’s passion for Alfa Romeos goes beyond the shapes that are so easy for everyone to love, and by the time the cars are returned to their owners, he’ll have had his hands on every bolt and bit.

I'm 72. After my years in British sport cars and about 5 BMW's, I bought my first Alfa over 20 years ago. Overall very reliable. My for last 156 1.8TS, in 10 years time, cost me about € 3500,-- maintenance. Not one had rust. The only weak point I found, electronics. I admire your work. As you are familiar with Europe, not many here are interested in a Corvette. as you probably know! Keep going Sir! Ps, there is one car I would prefer to end with, even more than a AR, a Triumph Italia. As I could do everything on it my self, as it's based on a TR3, my first car.

I have a modern Alfa, the 4C, it’s not a perfect car to drive compared to my 6 speed Cayman S but every time I drive it in the back roads, it just takes my breath away. The feeling of driving it is not linear and comforting, just bombards you with senses even if it’s a dual clutch, both hands must be on the steering wheel because it’s very nervous but lots of grip. Backroad driving makes me sweat, body and hands. It’s terrifying to drive but at the same time satisfying. Period!

Agree with the philosophy of using them, rather than static beauty queens. And yes, Alfa were the mother lode of brilliant engineer entrepreneurs: Wilfred Ricard went on to make Pegaso, Ferrari hired Jano, and i think also Colombo out of Alfa, Carlo Chiti...and when Ferrari first won against Alfa he said “ ho ucciso mia madre”....May the force be with you.

Old Alfas are a rich man’s indulgence. Most of their elderly buyers are pining for a past that is not even their own. They are buying into the Italian mystique of the 1950s and 1960s.
I was fortunate enough to grow up with Alfas in that era. From my teens I fondly remember my Dad’s 1600 Duetto Spider and a later 1750 Berlina. I learned how to drive in those cars and loved them. But neither on its best day could hold a candle to my current-generation Mazda MX-5.
I can’t afford to live in a fantasy car world. The decades have taught me that today I am driving what 50 years from now will be what this guy’s great-grandson will be restoring. The difference is, I’m living the dream now.
