      All of their releases the past 2 years or so and onwards are unlimited preorders. You have ~3 months to decide if you want to buy the game or not. Most of the games they sell don’t have the demand to hit store shelves so the only way to get them is through a limited run, which is the entire point.

    • @kicapanmanis1060
      @kicapanmanis1060 2 года назад

      So go buy the digital version then if you are worried about this "false demand". Everybody that wants one gets one.
      I mean you seem to think you can do a better job than LRG. Why not put your money where your mouth is? Make a company that can release niche games with wide physical releases and see how that works out.
      Also physical game being widely available in the past didn't stop piracy so not sure why that would change now.
      LRG is by no means perfect but they are at least trying to fulfill a niche demand and even then they get shot on it. Things will be much worse without them.

    • @lyianx
      @lyianx 2 года назад +5

      They are limited run because it would be financially a bad move to produce more copies than they can sell. This is why major publishers dont want to sell physical media anymore and are embracing digital distro. As another has said, they haven't had limited pre-orders in a long time and ive always had plenty of time to order what ive wanted.

    It's a fairly typical story: a upstart company decides to challenge the big corporations by offering a more ethical customer-focused approach, achieves great success, then gets greedy and starts to use some of the very same tactics that drove people away from their larger competitors and into their arms in the first place - figuring that the customers will stick around since they're still better than the alternative and out of brand loyalty. Resist the temptation to keep buying from them in the hopes that things will get better because they have no reason to make things better if you keep buying from them.

    The whole entire modern industry is an embarrassment. The major platform holders all hawk anti-consumer policies and products. And LRG, at this point, are a common garden variety publisher who aim their stuff squarely at collectors. Actual videogame preservation involves software piracy and jailbreaking hardware. There's a new sneaky thing that I've noticed Limited Run doing, likely to drum up sales on their bigger releases. In the past, anything Limited Run has distributed has always been released on Tuesday, whereas Fridays were reserved for games that were part of the LRG numbered set. In the case of both the recent TMNT and Tetris releases, both were distribution titles, but both were released on Friday. Also, on both games, Limited Run completely omitted the disclaimer that goes on every distribution release: "This is not a numbered release, and thus is not a part of the Limited Run Games Collection. We are distributing this title on behalf of ________. Missing out on this release will not compromise a complete Limited Run set." Plus, the image for the PS4 copy of Tetris has the LRG numbering on the spine, even though it won't actually have a number when people get it. This all may seem like a minor thing, but there are people who only collect the numbered set, and they're inevitably going to get tricked into thinking these two games are a part of it.

    Limited Run is the exact idea that I had and wish I’d put whatever it took to get going into. It’s a great concept for a company, and I always saw it as a small business opportunity really for anyone with the start up money and proper research and connections built. There will always be people like myself wanting physical games...including the patches and extra stuff from after release makes it a surefire winner as an idea to back. I’ve been gaming since I was 6, over 40 years ago now. So I’m very old school with everything. I still buy dvd, CDs for my music, etc. Never owned a song digitally. Currently I own 98 PS5 physical games with 5 on the way, 4 from Play Asia who is a Godsend. But I know they don’t always come with patches included, obviously new day one games never do. At least many Japanese devs actually release completed games not requiring day one patches, or they’re ver small if needed.

I never liked digital only releases and games having dlc with no plans of a complete edition of the game down the road, because eventually these services or support for these games will go down one day and in a hypothetical situation, these companies or devs could shut down at any moment. What would we be able to do in a situation like that where we are in this digital only gaming space, or when we still have games that have no hard releases? It's bad enough single player modes in games and local multiplayer in games are dying and are not being as prioritized as PVP and server based games, but making gaming digital only on top of that? I can't.

    Limited Run has really baffled me, they got a Shantae figure coming out and they're advertising the heck out of it and there's so many big problems
    1- It's using a 3D render so, you're not even really sure what you're getting. I say this is huge problem because the render shows through the pants, so I contacted them asking them if the pants were actually solid or cloth. It took 5 emails to get "It's made of resin like the rest of the figure" and I'm like ....are you SURE because the render is not leading me to believe that.
    2- All of their adverts for it are showing the figure with a bunch of Standees - that do not come with the figure, you can't even buy them if you wanted. Yes, they say on the side that it doesn't include them...But the only way they're advertising this all over the internet is with standees that you- seriously, cannot buy. They are limited to the PS5 discontinued collectors version and you can't get them in any other way. The other ones they show off to the side- ALSO are not the default option.
    Every other figure seller 90% of the time will photograph the ACTUAL product and not use the render. I really want the figure, but dropping $135 on something that I have zero idea on if it'll actually look like the render or look good in anyway shape or form? Yikes.
    I don't know what the heck they're thinking.

    I’m a big fan of Scott Pilgrim . The main reason I bought from LRG It’s because I wanted a physical copy and I wanted all the DLC. I own the game digitally on PS3 and I missed out on the DLC. I’m still so aggravated, It’s one of those Beat’em ups that really means something to me. I always felt kind of special that I recognized how good that game was before it was delisted and people started using it as a rallying cry for physical media. It makes me angry that they botched it. They were so scared someone else would publish it that they did a sh*tty job and have a monopoly on that game . I so did not want to buy anything from them, But I appreciated it at the time because I thought they were going to publish a complete game. Plus I bought the vinyl because I wanted to support Anamanaguchi who made a fantastic soundtrack. I wish I had just bought Anamanaguchi tickets with my money instead. I thought a game like Celeste was what they always did where they wait for all the DLC, and we knew the DLC was completed so there shouldn’t have been a problem. But hey at least limited run Doug has me blocked for making harmless jokes about how slow they are to get a product even though I’ve been waiting 500+ days for Scott Prilgrim . If Doug thinks I’m visibly toxic I think he should take a look in the mirror. I've disliked limited run games for a while now so it's nice to finally see someone address all their issues like this. I liked super rare games until they went against the whole game preservation ethos aswell and decided to make exclusive games that were limited and only available physically. Thankfully they changed their minds after backlash but it still shows that they don't care about preservation at all, it's only money

    You don't need physical games, you need DRM free digital games for preservation, whether you buy them or get them by other means. I have a PS2 and about 50 games, but my disc motor died, so I just run the as isos on the PS2 hard drive. I really can't think of a reason why you would NEED old games physical, especially with flashcarts and other software addons.

    I'm always think preservation are not solely in physical media (because it's still very susceptible to manipulation like in WATA case or Limited Run ) ,but combination of both. Or even better is what GOG did with DRM free digital copy that can be backup In any form you will and installing it again on a whim, no need login to store or need any internet connection.

    • @aquapendulum
      @aquapendulum 2 года назад +1

      I have said this over and over again. Physical has never been and will never be the solution to game preservation. The most effective preservers of video games are not your discs and game cards, it's digital pirates. They nailed the key factor that actually keep games playable on modern hardware: Mass digital redundancy with neutralized DRM. Digital redundancy solves the 2 final preservation roadblocks that physical media still bump into which is deterioration (disc rot, bit rot, scratches, etc...) and artificial scarcity.
      The only final boss left of game preservation is live service games, which require mass global mobilization to lobby lawmakers to shorten copyright expiration periods so that the ability to reverse-engineer them comes sooner. White-box RE will never be enough. It has to be legal to look at the assembly of game executables and directly analyze them.
      Also fuck Nintendo. Bottom of the barrel out of all the companies that are hostile to game preservation.

    I do want to correct something on this video. The streets of rage 4 anniversary edition isn’t complete on cart. At least not revision 000 which I believe is the only revision out there.
    There is a 964 MB update for it and it takes it from version 1.0.6 to version 1.0.7.

  • @Jeissecastillo
    @Jeissecastillo 2 года назад +1

    Doom eternal will only include version 1.09 on the cart. It will not be complete as the game goes up to version 1.12. This one is due to size limits.
    But there are other games that aren’t complete such as Quake, Wizards of Legends, Bug Fables and some others I know of. They are doing this more often than you think

    I respect you a lot for putting the actual product (videogames in this case but it could be tcgs or comic books or whatever hobby) first over the "trinkets" as you call them and for criticizing a company for its subpar job on what they promise, most fans do not have the integrity to do that and gobble everything their beloved company (which they usually identify with) releases.
    Most hobbies are walking corpses today, it's very sad.

    I have taken issue with the fact that internally there’s no clear message between employees on what to tell people when they come asking for help in some cases.
    The fiasco right now with the KO editions and the vinyl record of Scott Pilgrim has really soured me from ever purchasing from them again.
    I have not gotten my copy and it’s Beene over a year and a half at this point. I get the delays in production of vinyl it’s not that I am ticked off about.
    They prioritized bundles without telling us and they then admitted it. I don’t mind if the bundles were out first, but as a consumer I would have liked to have known this so I can gauge how long I’ll have to wait so I’m not continuing to ask.
    Delays suck I get it and your video did help shed a lot of light on things.

    if you're going to seriously consider collecting games that use disc based technology and pay $1000+ then you need to realize that they're all vulnerable to disc rot which can permanently damage and destroy your games and make them unplayable. Also most laser reading systems that are used on consoles from the 90s-2000s aren't that great and have a tendency to break down over time. And it's very hard to replace them or find someone who still knows how to fix them. We're already seeing this happen with the Sega CD generation of games and it's going to happen soon to the late 90s/early 2000s era of games on discs. LRG has a responsibility to let people know more about this or say what the chemical process is for their discs manufacturer. I don't like online DRM but we will get to a point in the future where we can only play online versions or FPGA systems of these games because the old consoles won't work anymore.

      Why does it have to be a day one physical release when the digital copy has already been out for a month and we'll have to wait a couple months for the physical version?
      Why not just wait a little longer for everything to be wrapped up?
      Unless it's an mmorpg, eventually a game as small as Shredders revenge has an end of life plan.

    15:40 It's both. Some people have the mindset that even a physical copy can become unusable due to a number of factors and no media can truly be preserved (unless through the seas). For some the physical media really is just a nice aesthetic, though it also has uses like trading / lending / reselling or being easier for some than managing your collection on the switch.

  • @yusofplayed

    My main problem is that most of the stuff they publish is really trash, like some of the stupidest and obscure games you can imagine. Not that they don't deserve preservation at all, but all this anime garbage is released every week it's like bruhhhh. Also yes they despise when anyone criticizes them lol! And most importantly, big games like streets of rage are more often getting updated releases in retail. Just wait until the game is fully patched in a few years and then offer the physical, it's so simple!

    Nice video. I have similarly spent thousands at LRG. I still like some of their offerings but their constant evasion of customer criticism is disappointing. I will still support them but I hope the people who work there grow up a bit and focus more on accountability for consumer rather than take things personally. Whenever something isn't fully addressed in a reddit AMA LRG just ignores the followup comments. This would be unacceptable from a rep from any other company

    TMNT: Shredder's Revenge has a release date of August 31 on Best Buy's website right now. Meanwhile on LRG's site it says: "We expect to ship this product in late July or Early August."
    Wonder if you order both, which will arrive first?
    Just kind of a shame physical is being reduced to novelty status more and more.

      I mentioned it in passing towards the end of the video. But I tried to avoid any subjective things that could be hand-waved by blaming it on the pandemic. Stuff is crazy messed up. I have another vinyl from another artist on super backorder which is probably the same supplier that LRG used for Scott Pilgrim.

    LR is just another publisher now, they have very little to do with game preservation anymore, many of their games are also published digitally by them.
    One of those cases were the company has become too big for their own good, constantly chasing growth and losing their original intent.

      @@SuperNicktendo That's just disappointing. They really need to step it up but they seem to be getting worse. 🙁 They pulled almost the same thing, more or less, with the Panzer Dragoon Remake Manual for the Switch which was missing from the shipment. • @sol6420

    How are you proposing they solve the problem of all updates/DLC not being on the printed cart/disc? Either LRG have to wait years after a release, in which case they have to deal with tons of requests from fans, might lose out on a publishing deal, publisher might lose interest in a physical game, or customers might lose interest. Or if they are releasing close to launch, LRG have to try to get a developer to guarantee that they won't release any patches or DLC after the cart/disc is printed? I'm not sure either of those solutions are tenable. What's your solution?
    LRG doesn't have enough power to dictate to large developers what they can or can't do with their games, like mandatory account logins. It sucks, but I"m not sure how LRG can get around this since larger devs can just walk away from a deal.
    Also it seems really weird to complain that they are putting out too many trinkets after buying the trinkets they put out.
    Also also it seems really weird to say in the intro that LRG came about to help with preservation and then later in the video complaining about the games they are picking to release. If it's about preservation, you should be happy about every game that they put out, no?

    • @Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective
      @Akechi_The_Phantom_Detective 2 года назад

      To be fair, they have been waiting on releases with the DLC in the past, ask anyone who ordered Super Meatboy Forever they can attest to this. That said I don't think he's blaming Limited Run for potential DLC issues it seems the issue is when they game is locked by DRM which if it's on a physical medium should NEVER EVER be the case. You shouldn't need an account to access content provided on the cartridge or disc itself. Preservation is the name of the game when it comes to physical media and yeah you can't predict DLC nor patch updates but you have no reason to lock it U-Play or Bethesda's trash heap.
      Imagine I sold you an OLEDTV LGCX model but then imagine I said well you can't just turn it on, you have to log into your LG account to do that.
