    Since the gopro 9 came into existence I'm using a similar technique with a lavier mike in my KLiM Krios Pro helmet facing backwards, behind my mouth. When the visor is down the result is reasonably clear and can be improved further in post. Great ideas to get that engine noise.

    In the beginning I used to put an audio recorder in a backpack. No I use this kind of a foam wind muff around my rear cam - a HERO5 Session. And as it is position at the very rear of my bike near the number plate and close to the exhaust, it is quite protected from wind and captures nice sound.

      I just checked out some of your videos. Very nice. You clearly enjoy producing motorcycle videos. I might try mounting my second GoPro on the back with a wind muff on it. Thx for the tip.

    Great video, Brent. For my videos, I use a separate camera with an external mic at the rear of the sidecar to pick up the exhaust note. I also have a mic in my helmet hooked up to the camera on my helmet. I don’t talk too much either, but if I do I can adjust the relative volumes between the two audio tracks so that my mumbling is somewhat understandable. 😬

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  3 года назад +2

      Interesting, how are you synching your two cameras? Manually or are you using the GoPro remote to button on/off both cameras automatically?

    • @Uraljunkie
      @Uraljunkie 3 года назад

      @@brentbat Haha… I actually use four cameras on my Ural. I have tried many different was of syncing them but they did not provide a sharp enough audio spike (horn etc). I borrowed a technique from the old movies - slapping the wood of a scene board. I have two pieces of small board in my sidecar and when I slap them together, I get a real tight sharp audio spike on all of my cameras audio tracks. The spikes are then easy to sync on all the tracks (manually) and trim accordingly. I use multicam in Resolve to then edit the videos. Very easy and very precise.

      @@Uraljunkie I love an old school approach. If you are using GoPros, you might want to look at an iPhone app called ProMote. If you want me to put you in touch with the developer, he's a German guy and he designed it especially for Motovlogging with multiple cameras and synching etc.

    • @Uraljunkie
      @Uraljunkie 3 года назад

      @@brentbat I have the syncing down pretty well. It works on any part of the video too - I just need to do it at some point and all is good. If for some reason I don’t, I use objects in the video to sync. All is good - thanks!

    Thanks for the video, but it would have been a big help to show how the cable is going from your jacket to the Gopro. Where have you mounted the Gopro, and how is the cable going from the jacket to the Gopro.

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  2 года назад +1

      Hey Paul.... Yes, you are right that would have helped. Let me see if I can explain it. I clip the lapel microphone onto the back bottom of my jacket. The mic sits just outside of the jacket and the cable loops underneath to the inside. I then use gaffer tape and tape it all the way up the inside of the back (along the spine of the jacket). The I route the cable along the inside of the collar from back around to the right side, so it is just inside my collar on the right hand side. I secure it there so that there is about 6" of cable hanging free out the front.
      When I put my helmet on, my gopro is chin mounted, and it is in the media mod which has a 3.5mm microphone jack in the rear, so once my helmet is buckled up, I then just feel for the 6" of microphone cable and plug it into the mic socket on the camera. I hope this helps.

    Hello Brent,
    Is there a specific brand that you use on the Lavalier microphone? I use Behringer and şt was working very well with Honda Africa Twin then switched to Triumph Tiger and all wind noise was right behind my back again.

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  11 месяцев назад +1

      No, I'm usually just buying pretty cheap lav mics off Amazon. That is strange that your mic worked fine when you were on the Africa twin but the same mic got wind noise when you changed bikes... i guess the aerodynamics of the bikes have changed the airflow around your body. I'm not sure that a different brand of mic will change that.... I think you might need to experiment more with mic placement and try to find somewhere to clip it that is outside of the direct wind flow... Another option is to wear like a little bum bag or something like that and put the mic inside it.

    I always liked how you dub in the comments/narrative over your video in post, more effort but it really pays off in the voice clarity not to mention a more thoughtful narrative. Blogging while riding the bike is rarely a improvement to a video IMO. My side mount on the big bike helmet has terrible sound, lots of wind disturbance in that area. I may try out the media mod after seeing this.

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  3 года назад +1

      Hey Ridefreak, glad you finding some of these tutorials useful. Yes, I find that I never really know what the story is that I'm going to edit while I'm riding. It's usually during the day that the "story" starts forming in my head... and for me it's just easier to do narration in post. Yeah, the lapel mic on the back of the jacket captures AMAZING motorcycle sound... really adds to the ride.

    On the helmet I have a Sony AS 100 action cam. Because of the bracket mount I don't have access to the microphone port (genius product engineers, yes). I also don't talk when riding- so I'm looking for a cheap external solution - up to 60-70 USD for recording and then synchronizing between camera photography and sound.
    Do you know / recommend a particular product?

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  3 года назад +1

      Hey Orpaztron, If you are looking for an external recorder, I'd try using your phone. I'm sure somebody must make an adapter to 3.5mm ports so that you can plug in an external mic and record using the phone. This is overkill, but if you used a simple lav mic this type of approach might help zoomcorp.com/en/jp/mobile-audio-recorders/ios-microphones/iq6/

    • @brentbat

      Hey Mike
      I have a Rode Lav mic (which is my good one), and that works great, but I tend to use that just for my "talking heads". and I use it with the Rode Go radio mic. For the trip to Idaho, I bought a cheapie lav mic off Amazon.www.amazon.com/dp/B08XQBPJN5?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details
      You are right about the compatibility, apparently the mics need to have two black rings on the 3.5mm jack. When I first plugged the lav mic into my gopro it didn't seem to work, then I read the instructions and it said I should use the little adapter cord that comes with it. Once I used that it was sweet.

    Hey Brent - thanks for this whole series. It has been very helpful. I tried attaching the mic to the back of my jacket as well, and got mixed results. While the audio from the exhaust was really good, I had a lot of crackling and interference, probably from when the microphone hit the back of the seat or my back or something. Did you place it anywhere special to avoid that?

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  3 года назад +1

      Hey Daniel
      It sounds like the jacket was banging on seat or something. Perhaps your jacket is a tad longer than mine. I haven't really found that I'm getting interference, you could try moving the position on your jacket...perhaps not dead centre on the back, perhaps off to one side. Good luck.

      I'm just getting into this video thing specifically for motorcycling. My first video had lots of wind noise sitting but standing all one could hear was the motor. GP was mounted on the side of my helmet. I'm next going to put a bit of foam over the pinhole where the mic resides.

      You don't need a high end one. Especially considering you often keep the audio low to mix it with music etc. So a reasonably cheap one should do.
