Why not show the hardware before the software. Then show the machine itself being controlled and running the game. Things are not adding up.

      The easiest way to go about this project would be to use an authentic chipset for the Dreamcast (maybe emulating a few of the harder to find chips), and then use FPGA emulation for all the other consoles. The Dreamcast had clones even when it was in production.
      Both the SH and PowerVR architectures lived on long after the Dreamcast, although there might be slight incompatibilities with newer processor versions and of course clock speed differences.
      Using an FPGA to emulate these processors would be much more expensive, and a waste having a really powerful FPGA just for one system.

    • @nvc.
      @nvc. Месяц назад

      @@markx1126 But then this project hould be pointless. The De10 allready replicates all sega hardware except the dreamcast. FPGA Dreamcast is what makes this project exciting. imo

  • @nvc.
    @nvc. Месяц назад +15

    Here's the problem, from what i know, FPGA allways has frame accuracy, might render slow if not well implemented or the FPGA board doesn't have enough logic elements, but all frames are allways rendered properly in FPGA, thats why it's so accurate, its recreating the original board. This footage has frame skipping, that's a sign of soft emulation.. I don't know man, doesn't look like this is running on a FPGA system.

    • @labnine3362
      @labnine3362 Месяц назад +5

      100% on target here. Software emulation and the fact that they tried to pass it off means we should not trust them.

    • @ccricers
      @ccricers Месяц назад +2

      I think the only soft emulation that can completely mimic FPGA emulation is transistor level emulation. Projects like metalNES do this, frame accurate but render frames even a lot more slowly than FPGA.

    • @nvc.
      @nvc. 12 дней назад

      @@ccricers Not even that. The sequence of info output on original hardware is done through multiple chips at the exact same time, that can never be replicated on software emulation because the process is allways done one after the other, in sequence, there will allways exist input lag no matter how fast the emulator/machine are, it's never the same. The only thing that can do exactly the same as an original board is FPGA. The problem is that FPGA is much more expensive.

    GDEMU emulates GDROM drive via FPGA and it was released in 2014. This is not much of a stretch to think that 10 years later others could do the other areas of Dreamcast besides the disc drive. But I too am a bit skeptical because FPGA implementation of other systems from that similar time frame to Dreamcast do not all run and work as well. But didn't N64 get done on FPGA recently too? PSX? Saturn is complicated but if those other systems are running maybe others could be possible this far into the future.

That’s why you need the larger SDRAM for the NeoGeo core and why it takes longer to load those games. I don’t think that’s the case with CD consoles like PlayStation and Saturn. I might be wrong but that’s my guess.

    What I’ve never understood is why there isn’t a full on emulator to run ON the Dreamcast that covers all previous Sega consoles, including Saturn.
    Obviously SG1000, master system/game gear, and Genesis are easy enough to accurately software emulate. But the Saturn should be hardware-compatible with the Dreamcast CPU because the DC uses the same Hitachi SH architecture as the Saturn, and its GPU is significantly more powerful, plenty of headroom for a wrapper to process quadrilaterals. I get why the Saturn was so hard to emulate, but I don’t get why the DC, a machine-code-compatible successor, was overlooked as a bridge console…the same way the Saturn, which had the same CPU’s as the 32x, AND A CARTRIDGE SLOT, couldn’t run 32x cartridges! I mean you can’t make up the stupidity in that oversight.

I would have an easier time believing in this if it were a Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge plugged into a cartridge slot attached to a pile of wires and boards. I can’t be 100% certain, but it could be real and I say this because on my Dreamcast it’ll load games faster due to the drive being swapped out for an SD card reader (even plays games better due to better read times). Now obviously my situation isn’t 1:1 with this supposed FPGA implementation, but the faster load speeds could be in part due to running off a current gen SD card and possibly also running on a newer FPGA that’s significantly more capable than a Dreamcast.

    It sounds to good to be true, until they show someone on screen loading into the Super Sega console dev kit, I wouldn't trust it, for all we know, that Street Fighter 2 footage may be from a real Sega Dream cast instead of this supposed new Super Sega. If they do try and crowd fund, they better have an actual dev kit to prove it's authenticity ,otherwise it will be a hard pass from everyone

    It will NEVER read any DC disk ever.
    Sega was pretty good in keeping the Production tight and secret. There is no, will no ever be a DC Disk drive for the free market
    Only thing this is reading is burned disks, period

    As an old school SEGA fan, I do not find FPGAs not all that exciting. Most of DC games are too low resolution for any monitor above 15 inches (lets not even speak of the Saturn), and the fact this is made for CDs and Cartdriges which are no longer in production are will only exist less of in the future and thus are EXPENSIVE just makes it very "meh"
    A good Flycast or BeetleSaturn update is functionally much more interesting than this

      I doubt the Amico will ever launch, so far there's only 3 people testing the thing. The machine would had launch quicker if they actually sent thousands of test units to actual legit testers like Linus, the Phawx, or Spawn Wave.

    If they are around for so long, their CAD and GUI design is most ugly and shows no love or respect to Sega. Loading a game from CHD image from SD card instead of GD-ROM shows they want to lure customers instead of talking about the technical details. They simply can not provide genuine GD drives i would assume. Also what about that expensive FPGA dev board they are "using"? Even if they are trying for real they can not succedd.
